    I, too, prefer hearing why people dislike certain books. I blame my inner scrooge, and I appreciate his cynical sass.

    As I Lay Dying is sooo incredible. One of my all time favorites. The writing style can be a bit abrupt and difficult to get used to and I suggest reading it slowly to take it all in. It's such a beautiful novel and Faulkner's writing is gorgeous, dark, and melancholy in the most wonderful day.

    Are you able to read all these books in one week? That's crazy. I usually can only manage one 400 page book a week. I live with my family and they constantly have the television on though so it's almost impossible to find quiet time to read, so that may have something to do with it.

    I just literally laugh-snorted at your description of As I Lay Dying, which you'll probably appreciate when you read it. It's a good introduction to Faulkner. I already knew that I really have to read Baldwin, but now I REALLY have to read Baldwin.

    The only book by Waugh I've read is "A Handful of Dust". I thought it lovely in a rather (read: desperately) nostalgic way. Dickens was a recurring theme. Thumbs up for that. Worth a read. I look forward to a review of the three you plan to read!

    North and South is amazing, although somewhat Austen-esque. Franny and Zooey was good but made me want to read the Pilgrim's Progress which is mentioned a lot in the second novella. I need to get on that come to think of it.

    "She" was fun to read. Most of H. Rider Haggard's adventure novels are engaging. The main character in "She" gets around; she appears in several Haggard novels, including an encounter with Allan Quatermain of "King Solomon's Mines."

    Have 'Native Son' on the back of my shelf. A bit of dust. Maybe a cobweb or two on it. Will now begin to read. You did not lead me astray with 'The Luminaries' so I will give it a go and read it now that I am now done with 'The Call of the Wild'

    Oh my goodness James Baldwin! I also read Giovanni's Room this week and was in a total state of shock.
    Love Isherwood and love Waugh.
    Gaskell is a little like Dickens but from a female point of view. Very dark and industrial.

    I quite enjoyed Franny and Zooey which, to me, was just a long, quirky, profound conversation that felt like it's not going anywhere but then it does, and I'm starting to feel that this is just what Salinger likes to do. I think I might've even enjoyed it more than the Catcher in the Rye but maybe that's just because I wasn't as mature when I read the Catcher in the Rye. But yeah, you seem to have a wonderful week ahead of you!

  • @WeLiveforBooks

    "JAMES FUCKING BALDWIN" BEST EVER.
    I started his Giovanni's Room before my busy season, and I had to stop because it was too good and I wanted to really take it in.
    Raymond Carver is one of my favourite authors, and that collection is the WORST one (or at least my least favourite). "What we Talk about When We Talk About Love" is my personal fav. You should also watch "Short Cuts" by Robert Altman. It's based on Carver's stories and it's wonderful.
    Also, "Single Man" Holy Fuck.

  • @writerspen010
    @writerspen010 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ughh, "As I Lay Dying" is complete shh... BUT NORTH & SOUTH IS AMAZING! I'm almost done reading it, and I absolutely love the story-- even the union bits. I feel like Gaskell would've made a decent reporter, if her time period actually let women, y'know, do stuff >_>" You should definitely watch the mini-series afterwards. I would quite curious to know how you think it ranks in comparison.

  • @myrtolefk
    @myrtolefk 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you should read the book of disquiet (if you haven't) by fernando pessoa it sounds like something you'd like... I haven't read it yet because I don't have enough money to buy it right now but jugding from the reviews it's really great and I'm in love with all the quotes on goodreads and apparently he said my favourite thing in the world which is "everything was sleeping as if the universe were a mistake" and another quote which I think you might like is "One of my life's greatest tragedies is to have already read The Pickwick Papers. (I can't go back and read them for the first time.)". Again if you've read it did you like it? I don't think I've herad you talking about it.. :)

  • @LauraFreyReadinginBed
    @LauraFreyReadinginBed 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You read so much, but you haven't read some of the "big" classics - I'm all jealous that you get to read some of these for the first time!
    As I Lay Dying - amazing. I'm really glad I read this before I knew what book blogging was (hell, before most of this stuff existed, TH-cam, Goodreads etc.) because I went in totally blind, no chance to be intimidated. It's good. I need to read more Faulkner. Also to watch Franco ruin it.
    Franny and Zooey - better than Catcher in the Rye.
    North and South - not as good as Austen and I don't even like Austen that much. The mini-series is delightful.
    I think I'll read some Baldwin for this "Novellas in November" thing I'm doing. Gonna be good.

    Prince Caspian was alright, very much like The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but prepare to hate the last book of Narnia, a lot of discrimination. I love your passionate loathing of society. I completely share this hatred too xxx

  • @librarystacks
    @librarystacks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    James Baldwin is awesome and I am so happy that you're giving him some publicity here on TH-cam.
    I read a story by Raymond Carver once and it was so fucking godawful that I never want to read anything else by him, or anything written by the group of writers he belongs to. Realism can be so fucking boring. I don't want to read about a cart being pushed in a grocery store. It's not symbolic, it's boring as fuck.
    I also loved North & South and I really hope you like it, but I'm also afraid you won't like it and will bash it because her storytelling reminds me of Austen. I love how Gaskell writes about places, and in that way, she reminds me of Dickens.

  • @LydiaEmily

    Ah yes. Welcome to the James Baldwin fanclub. Giovanni's Room sent me into some form of breakdown it was so perfect.
    I haven't read The Horse and His Boy in like over a decade but I remember it being dull as fuck and completely pointless and I have strong feelings of dislike towards that book. Like Lewis could have just not written the book and just left us with the title and we'd have missed out on approximately nothing.
