24 years later to the day that they opened the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games we had our son... Lloyd! Named after this inspiring athlete and man who showed the world that day that you should NEVER give up. Note: So far our 5yo Lloyd is the fastest in his little atheletics club- Australia and the world may get to cheer 'Lloydy' on home again soon!

Lloydie is a legend. i used to train with him running around Church Point and Narrabeen in Sydney's northern beaches. I would stay with him on the flat from Mona Vale to Narrabeen, then he would just burn up that bastard of a hill up Powderworks Road to the Bahai Temple. When I watched this in 1990 I remembered him sprinting up that hill and I thought, "If anyone can run this guy down, Lloydie can." If you know that hill you'll know how hard Lloydie worked running that most days of the week.

It may not have been an Olympics, or even a showdown between immortal combatants of the 5000m distance - but THIS, is arguably the most exciting, dramatic and unbelievable moment in the history of middle distance running. It is absolutely epic.

Timed to perfection. Lloyd could have gone with 1 lap to go but chose to tuck in until the 200, allowing him to conserve energy and use Hamer to pull him through to the 100 where he unleashed the beast. Epic run

When you considered that........ he battled back from serious arm and ankle injuries sustained in a 1985 car accident in which his first wife was killed....that he underwent 7 operations........his last 200metres was bloody astonishing

As great as it was to see Lloydy win, more credit must be given to Ngugi, who still nearly won despite falling early in the race. That's guts!

32 years ago .......my neighbour came shouting out from the top of his house onto his balcony that Andrew Lloyd was " coming home " in the 5000m ........
What a great memory during these present Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.!!!
My neighbour achieved his own golden medals by riding his push bike from Sydney to Melbourne and some time later .......from Melbourne to Sydney!!!!
We " fun runners " from Frank's ?? magazine readers, enjoyed many events locally in Berowra and the City To Surf runs of course.
My best prize was a " lucky door " prize win put on by Singapore Airlines in 1979 when a 65 year old ran past me and cheered me up in my first fun run !!! I was 39yrs old!!!
    Happy days....

We had been at the velodrome most of the games, we didn't have tickets for the 'drome that night so we went down to the stadium. I told my wife that I would not do much yelling that night as it was very croaky, then came Lloydie! I was literally speechless for days!

I was there that day. The Aussies were cheering on Lloyd but everyone else was cheering for Ngugi and Roger. A popular sentiment was that Lloyd was first across the line but Ngugi won.

I hate drug cheats too but this is way too harsh an assessment of Ngugi. The Kenyan association had not told their athletes about the new out of competition testing. Ngugi, who was in the Kenyan Army, had foreign strangers turn up on his doorstep wanting a urine sample. Not sursprisingly he refused.

Two observations apart from the magnificent performance by Andrew Lloyd. Firstly, Wally Foreman just hogged the commentary entirely, not letting Monners get a word in. What’s the point of having an expert co-commentator if they don’t get to speak? Secondly, Foreman’s derisory comments regarding Lloyd after the finish were appalling in my view. Completely unwarranted if you know anything about Andrew’s career which included many, many victories. How would Foreman like his also-ran career subjected to similar criticism on national television?
