    New to home assistant but not new to HomeKit ( and I’m realizing they are not the same in so many ways).
    Slowly learning and hopefully tomorrow I can accomplish what my main goal is with this system.

    As a totally newb to Home Assistant, this video have really helped me get started on some simple automations. Thanks for that.
    BUT (there is always a but :) )
    One thing i have really struggled getting to work, is the night settings condition. But not only you but a few others describe the After Sunset and Before Sunrise, as the way to set a condition that means night. I have really struggled to get this to work, and have to say it is because as you (and others show it), it does not work.
    Let me explain, what i have found out
    - After Sunset does actually mean from Sunset until midnight
    - Before Sunrise does actually mean from Midnight until Sunrise.
    So setting those to tick marks actually mean
    From Sunset to Midnight AND from Midnight to Sunrise. Which is a situation that can't happen at the same time. (This is not logical when you look at the interface and actually not how Time does it, where it do work)
    When that clicked for me, i also immediately got why all my experiments with before Sunrise always resulted in my automation not working. I tried to configure it it before midnight... .... for a few nights now :)
    The solution, so if others see this and are new to HA, are to make and OR condition with two separate conditions below. One for After Sunset and one for before Sunrise.
    I can't paste a screenshot here, so if you're new to Home Assistant do this.
    Add a Condition, click the 3 little dots and select Edit as YAML
    Then paste this, that does the above (Switch back to UI the same way to see it)
    condition: or
    conditions:
    - condition: sun
    after: sunset
    - condition: sun
    before: sunrise
    Hope this help someone save 2-3 nights of hair pulling :)

      Yes you are right. It is a fault in the video as someone above also told. I am terribly sorry for that. Your solution is correct.

    I'm new to HomeAssistant and use your videos to learn myself the basics (good job, thank you).
    In the old days I used Domoticz and loved creating automations through Blockly because of being simple, but it was not able to do some of the more complex automations I wanted (for instance: calculate delta's which I would like to use for the bathroom humidity). Next I moved to Homey just because it has all antennas (ZigBee, Z-wave, WIFI, BT and 433Mhz) in one device. Making automations using 'flows' was not that difficult but another way of thinking after coming from blockly.
    So now HomeAssitant. Same issue as with Domoticz.... not having all antenna's by default (need to buy USB devices) but.... the rest looks very promising and I can start playing with all devices which are wifi connected (youless, hue, tradfri etc)
    I'm now looking for a way to replace the following:
    When the outdoor HUE sensor is below a lux value for 5 minutes then my outdoor lights (HUE) need to start dim from 0% to 100% in 30minutes.
    Will this be possible or do I need to start scripting (which I'm not good in)

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can do this!
      In the action of your automation you can add something like :
      - service: light.turn_off
      entity_id: light.gardenlightbulb # your light entity
      transition: 1800 # time in seconds for the off transition here.
      The dimming then should take 30 minutes.

    • @claim71
      @claim71 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SmartHomeJunkie I'm guessing this will not be possible in the cards when creating a new automation. I have tried to add the transition line in yaml but this is giving me an error

    Being new to Home Assistant I am trying to use the automation editor as I find Node Red too confusing. I've had trouble performing some options like setting the volume on the media player. There is an option in the automations to 'edit in yaml' but every time i do this to add features to the code, it never saves the changes. Are you not allowed to modify automations in the editor? why is there an option to 'edit in yaml'? How do you create automations manually to get them to stick?

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can edit in Yaml. Yaml is very sensitive to the indentation of the code. It might be that the code is indented wrong.

    Hi Ed.
    Questions:
    I have a door sensor (open / close) in esphome. I created two alerts one for the door is open and the other for the door is closed.
    From time to time the sensor becomes unavailable and it triggers the current state which is a false alert. No actions were taken by a person.
    I tried conditions. Only send out a closed message if the current state of the door sensor is open. But when the door is closed and the sensor becomes unavailable and returns online it will send out a message that the door was closed.
    I read online that people are experiencing the same issue with the esp modules becoming unavailable.
    Do you or anyone know how I could stop getting false message when the sensor comes back online?

      Thank you for your Feedback! Telegram seems to be the means of choice. And I ask myself why so many people use Telegram instead of the companion app. I'm a beginner and don't have a lot of experience! So perhaps this question no longer arises to an advanced user. Before you create a video on how to connect and use Telegram, maybe it could be better if you go into the Home Assistant app at some point and explain how to deal with messages in this constellation. Perhaps using the messenger is simply completely unnecessary. I really don´t know! :) Thank you for your hard job and to be such a grat help for us! Especially for us beginners!

    I need automation for 2 garden sprinklers which start every day for 20 min during set time(e.g 1pm to 6pm) only if main supply to water pump is avaible (because of irrigular power supply). I have voltage and current sensors which I can use to check if 240volt main supply is available. Also just after sprinkler valve is open( I have normally closed solonoid valve) I need to turn on water pump which is far away from garden which I could turn on through esp8266 relay using esphome add-on though same WiFi connected to Home Assistant and ESP8266.

      @@SmartHomeJunkie @Hive Mind Automation thank u
      here is more info of setup:
      only one valve will be open (normally closed type solonoid valve) at a time and next after 20min.
      We should track main supply/or water coming through sprinkler continuously during operation to confirm that full 20 min of sprinkling has happened.
      In case there is loss of power supply to water pump during, say sprinkler-1 operation then battery supply to 12 volt DC Normaly closed type solonoid valve-1 should stop to close it(to save battery supplying to Raspberry pi and two sprinkler valves) and then comes after some time, sprinkler-1 should start again to complete remaining duration. And then next sprinkler should start and same tracking for sprinkler-2 and then confirm that both sprinkler ran for 20min each. Then it's good to go, to stop water pump(switching pump starter is not a problem). Both sprinkler valves are normally closed type solonoid valve.
