Some breeds are designed to be sprinters while others are distance runners. My Dachshunds and Bassets are surprisingly fast over short distances but my Labrador can run for miles and miles.
I would recommend harness. I thinks it's safer, dog can be more relaxed and easier to manipulate. Collar can be preatty harmful if the dog is pulling which is desired in dog running .
Do you use the hands free lesh? If so, did you go over any training with your dobe? I’m scared to try running hands free with my dobe since I am 100 pounds and my dobe is a growing 50 pounds
Thanks for bringing up the fact that dogs cannot sweat. They pant to release heat and can only do this when they are at rest so if using a leash please monitor them and allow stops/water as needed as heat and the sun can be much worse for them than us. For some breeds an endurance run is quite difficult even if they appear eager initially as breeding may have been geared to quick sprints only. Our dogs are not not of the variety of this video (non-sporting types) so while I do run on leash with them at times it is only for fun/play and treat it as their outing, not mine so a lot of start-stop-sniff-repeat sessions :) .
This such a great video. It made me smile just watching Nora have fun! Making sure our dogs get enough exercise is a great reason to teach them to run with us! I know of a few dog advocacy sites that would love to see this, so I'm going to share this!
@@NoBody-kv3yd Of course, I mean, why would you want to waste time training your dog and building a strong bond with him/her while you could just solve your problems by means of inhibition through physical pain?
Awesome vid. I am a dog trainer and behaviourist and get a smile on my face when people use common sence around their dog. One tip: maybe a harnass will give her a less uncomfortable feeling when you have to shorten your leash. It's also less straining on her neck and it gives you more control in situations where you might need it. Other than that: happy tails on happy trails!
Since you are a dog trainer can you help me out a bit? My dog is very territorial and my neighbors got a puppy and when my dog sees the puppy I can tell if she wants to attack her or if she wants to play she is barking and growling but her tail wags and she gets into the stance she gets into when she plays. Do you think she is being aggressive or playful
Dude thanks for sharing. That’s an awesome pace. Looking forward to starting with my Doberman and reaching that goal. I currently run a sub-40 5k without a dog. Lol.
This is great! As a running coach, you have tremendous insight on dogs and your advice is golden. Nora is so lucky to have you as her human companion. !
I do Maffetone training with my Corgi/Australian shepherd dog. Get my exercise in and she does too. Lessens the risk of obesity in dogs and keeps me trim.
Excellent points about not over doing it...dogs can't talk and they also let enthusiasm over rule pain...but most have no problem running with a hominid
Nora and you make a great team! Please consider a Canicross harness for Nora to go with the bungee line. It means that when she pulls her windpipe isn't crushed and she can breath easy. It also puts her at less risk of injury if one of you have to stop suddenly, or trip. Happy trails!
I know this is an older video, but I love this. We just got a puppy (5 months old), and he's definitely a running dog! I want to make sure we aren't blowing him out. Luckily for him, I average about a 12 minute training pace, so it's a nice easy trot for Mikko the Wonder Dog! Thanks again!
What i missed is adjusting the pace to your dogs pace. Although my dog also does the snif & sprint thing, i adjust the pace so he's trotting if he follows my pace. The other point that's imporant, you also mentioned, pay close attention to your dogs steps during the run. If there is any sign of limping or discomfort, the run is over.
You shouldn't go running with your dog if they pull period. Harness or Collar. if dogs pull on a harness, this will cause schaffing to the point where it will cut into the dog and potentially cause an infection. Definitely train your dog to loose lead walk before trying to jog!
I run with a 4yo Border Collie. The only thing that stops him is heat. We ran 21km of trails today. Running on road has proven more problematic over the years but we have reached a point where the only thing that phases him is trucks. We live rurally though and the roads we run are very quiet.
Superimposing - I have a 4 month old Border Collie puppy! He has two speeds, Zero and 100 mph lol which I think you already know :-) I am a long time runner and live in a rural area with grass trails. He's not quite ready, but soon I hope I can have the fun you have been having. Best!
For off leash running i would always recommend an e collar because at some point while running your dog off leash he/she will run after whatever and if she/he doesn't listen it may cause serious harm just a alittle recommendation for you
Great video! My dog is also much more FOMO driven and it's sometimes very hard to get his attention back to me. It's slow going, but he's getting better and better. I can't wait to be able to take him out on long runs with me!
I strated up runing since a few month now, and kind of like it, but I have just adopted a small (18kg) German shepperd last week fom the shelter, and plan on training her to run with me. Awesome. Dogs are great to run with. When the temp is cool my lab mix can run as far and fast as I can, but in the heat I just take him for a warmup or cool down.

Hey Nate, any tips on a dog that has to stop and smell everything? Im constantly pulling her along or stopping for her to sniff/mark. She can run with me, its just she stops too often to make it enjoyable.
Put aside some sniffing and marking time before the run, or at another time of the day. Running is no alternative to their walk. Be clear about the difference between the two, and show that running time is "working" time. You'll have their full attention. If unleashed it's normal for them to run a bit ahead or stay behind for the occasional snif, that's how they run and regulate their temperature. But they should always stay aware of the goal, which is to move forward with you, and not to stop for every smell they comes across. If the goal seems unclear to them, take time to teach it, even if it cuts into your own running time. You won't regret it. Been running with my dog for over 4 years, and have loved every second of it. Dogs are our best connection to nature and running with them only strengthen that bond. There is nothing like it. Hope this helps :)
A good fitting Canicross harness prevents the dog's windpipe being crushed whilst pulling and reduces risk of injuries should one of you so unexpectedly or dog tries to suddenly shoot off.
I run with my pal too. Great hints. How did you find her as my dog was a rescue and it was totally by accident that we started running together. I trained her to run on my left as we run toward traffic for safety. She has gone as far as 8-9 miles.
Nice video. I run with my cairn terrier. Only one question: Why don't you use a harnass? It's way better for their throat. My previous dog got trachea collapse because he used to pull on a collar before he was my dog. It was horrible. Vet recommended using a harnass when running. Again, no hate, just wondering.

Thanks Coach Nate and Coach Nora for the vid :D I've been running a few years with my dog and the furthest I went with him is 12km. At the moment we are running together three times a week, twice on leash and once off leash on the trails. Think we can try to go for a 16km and slowly build up from there... Just have a question, if you run with Nora where there is not a lot of puddles or a stream how often do you give her water on you longer runs?

Honestly it's funny that you invest money into fancy equipment like the Trekz Aftershokz earphones for yourself, and at the same time your dog does not have an appropriate sports harness? I cannot un-see how much her neck gets yanked at while you run, especially around 5:40 when you pull her closer to you - ouch. Why would you want to encourage people to do it like that when there are so many sports harnesses on the market? Your dog tolerates it because she is excited and happy to do things with you, but it is not comfortable or even healthy for her neck in the long run. Why go through the effort of even making a video on the topic without suitable and safe equipment for both running partners...
