Thank you so much for being a part of my Journey to Wellness. The wonderful comments and incredible outpouring of support mean so much to me 🙏♥️
I want to share all my experiences in this series, as I know exactly how devastated I felt when I first received the diagnosis of breast cancer, and the highs and lows along the way.
I hope these videos in my Journey to Wellness series will be helpful to anyone going through a similar situation:
JOURNEY TO WELLNESS

The most important thing to remember is that no matter how frightening it is to first find out, this is not a death sentence, and there are so many things we can do to help heal these amazing bodies of ours!
Please share any suggestions, recommendations, and your own experiences, as I am sure we are all completely committed to living a long and healthy life.
Sending you all the very best wishes 🤗😁
~ Mandy
Thanks for the update and as always I'm sending you positive thoughts and healing vibes! Your body is healthy and healing itself!! Did you go back to Portugal? Look forward to a vlog on that!! Hi to Lee your loving and very supportive hubby!!
@tamaramadelin4831 Thank you so much, Tamara! I agree, my body is healing itself, with help from the delicious food I have been eating, and the daily exercise. Lee and I are both enjoying being back on the Silver Coast, housesitting our favourite cat ❤😻
Oh no - the pits! 😂 the bacteria thing is true. In the pandemic in a pinch I found a blob of hand sanitiser eliminated odours in an instant. It soon came back though. Luckily I have since found a deodorant that works.
The pits indeed 🤣 Hand sanitiser is a good idea... I was surprised at just how effective lemon juice was, as it kept odors away all day! The only problem was that a slight skin irritation developed under my arm after a few days, but by then I could shower and switched to a non- aluminium deodorant. If I was more organised I'd make deodorant from baking soda (powder?), coconut oil and teatree oil, but it seems like hard work 🤣🤗
Watching your Sri Lanka videos I'm guessing you are up & running!
You look good in this one!
I'm getting confused 😂
Take care and stay safe x. 🙏🇬🇧
Hello Steve! I know it's probably super confusing re: the converging timelines 😂 I wanted to share my Journey to Wellness videos in one block but it took me a while to be able to work through the footage as there were some sad days in amongst the positive ones. I'll be putting out a video every Monday until I'm finally up to date and can do a 6-month anniversary update. I hope you're still enjoying our Sri Lanka videos... I was actually diagnosed with breast cancer in Kandy, at the wonderful Asiri Hospital 😊😁 ~ Mandy
Yea, I saw that wonderful hospital! I catch most of your videos but just "like" & not necessarily comment 🙏❤@@FrugalTravellers
U will be healed I've been praying for you 🙏🙏
Thank you so much, Nisar. I appreciate your kindness and your prayers 🙏😍
Hi Mandy,
Today I won't comment on this vlog but I'd like you to watch a music video from a breast cancer survivor (U might even recognise the place 😉)
Anastacia - Best Days (Official video)
Hope you're doing OK, catch you later 🙋🏻♂️😘
Wow, that was so wonderful, SERGIO 🤗 I'd forgotten that Anastacia had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and that she has simply thr most incredible voice!
This was the first time I'd heard/seen this song and yes, it brought tears to my eyes... happy tears 😊☺️. I recognised 24th (25th?) April Bridge in the first scene but then wasn't sure as the scenery was so lovely, and understated, not just showing all the major sights one after another!
It wasn't until I saw Belem and that tram that I was sure of the city... and isn't it a beautiful city!
Sending you so much gratitude and appreciation, SERGIO. Thank you so much for your kindness and your support xx🙏🤗 ~ Mandy
@@FrugalTravellers(25th of April bridge).
I'm glad you liked it, I thought you'd probably identify yourself to her story, the lyrics & that you guys know Lisbon. Plus it's a "feel good" song to cheer you up.
You guys have a fun one, take care 🙋🏻♂️
Lol!! You actually recorded yourself smelling your pits! 😂😂 classic! The lemon tree had tons of fruit but the 43 degree days made it drop most of them a few weeks ago. Bummer. But there should be plenty for when you get back in a few months. ❤
It had to be done... I hadn't realised just how much my left armpit would smell after 1½ weeks! The apple cider vinegar was a fail but the lemon juice was magic! You have the best lemon tree xx🙏🤗❤️
Wishing you all the best, Mandy. With love and prayers.
Thank you so much, ASB. I appreciate your kindness and positivity 🤗❤️
We are so glad to hear that you’re recovering well. I’m really curious about your vegetarian diet, was this something that the doctors recommended that you do because of the cancer? I may have missed that in an earlier video. Thank you as always for being so candid back your cancer experience, even the smells! Yes, Taiwan and Philippines are also very high on our travel bucket list as well. They look like amazing countries And I’m sure you both have a lot of fun there. Fingers crossed you get there soon! - Jon
Hello Jon, and thank you so much for your lovely comment 🙏♥️. As soon as I received the diagnosis of breast cancer, I immediately took out loads of books on thr Libby app and delved deep into learning about cancer treatment. A common theme seemed to be embracing a whole foods plant-based diet, which made so much sense. I went all in as soon as we returned to Perth as wanted to get my body in the best possible situation before surgery, and I really think it paid off. I told my surgeon about going whole food plant-based, and his main recommendation was to ensure I ate enough protein in whatever form I chose. Big hugs to you and Jay, and we're loving your Sydney videos! We definitely need to meet up in the next year or so 🤗😍 ~ Mandy
I've just got into the libby app as well, it is fantastic!! We are trying our best to move towards a plant based diet as well (youtube filming shoots aside!) as well as probiotic foods for gut health. Big hugs to you both too and fingers crossed we cross paths in the next year! - Jon
@BucketListTravellers Yayyyy for Libby! It's been one of my favourite apps for years... it can glitch occasionally, which happened to me on the Trans Siberian in 2018, but apart from those rare hiccups it's absolutely brilliant 👏🤩 I've been eating sauerkraut every day and low fat Greek yogurt with oats and ½ banana every other day... well, at night actually, as I read the combination was good to help you sleep. I haven't quite found that but it makes a tasty dessert with Ceylon cinnamon 🤗😋 ~ Mandy
Praying for you. I lost track of you two. I was watching your Portugal videos. I had 2 breast surgeries in 3 yrs all post covid. I know some of what you’re going through. Although everyone has their own journey. I’m doing well now and planning my move to Madeira Island, Portugal. I’m looking forward to your next videos. Best wishes ❤😊
@@entrophyentrophy9562 Thank you so much for your very kind comment, and for sharing your journey with us. Your move to Madeira sounds so exciting... we've never been there and it's definitely on our wishlist xx🤗🙌🇵🇹♥️
Hi Mandy! It's so wonderful to see you smiling and shiny again 😊! Positivity is so important not only for our health but also for those around us - it's infectious, in a good way 😅. I'm looking forward to your videos from the Philippines! Take care!
Hello MyDog 👋 Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I certainly felt much better, even if I smelt much worse 🤣 There are still more Sri Lanka videos to come, and then it will be our Philippines series... another great country, but such a different experience! Sending you a big virtual hug 🤗😁 ~ Mandy
Thank you for sharing this journey. You are loved and admired and I am praying for your continued recovery and am excited about your upcoming travels.
Thank you so much 🙏🤗 I feel quite overwhelmed by your beautiful words, and I greatly appreciate your kindness and support 😍♥️ ~ Mandy
Hi Mandy, your lymph system from what I understand drains from your left armpit. Try a magnesium spray for odors, its easy to make with distilled water and Magnesium Chloride. The odor is caused sometimes by magnesium deficiency. Its perfectly normal the odor but candida can be a cause as well so any OTC yeast infection cream or athlete foot spray can help. Just consult your health professionals before trying any OTC. Baking soda is also great for odor as well mixed with lemon juice
Thank you so much for these brilliant suggestions. I have taken a screenshot and will look into making a magnesium spray, as I wouldn't be surprised if I had a magnesium deficiency. I appreciate your kindness and supportive recommendations 🙏🤗 ~ Mandy
Wishing you the very best Mandy in your recovery, you have such a strong healthy mindset and with your down to earth no frills clarity on procedures I know that you will be touching thousands going through this ❤️
You and Lee are a power couple love watching you both, and have used many of your wonderful tips .
Keep on trekking xxx
Thank you so much, Amanda, for your kind words and for your wonderfully supportive comment. I really hope these videos will help others, as I wanted to share every aspect of these all so new experiences on this unplanned journey. I can't say enough how grateful I am for all of the positivity I have received from everyone, and I know that these comments will help me on my way to 100 ♥️😍🙏 ~ Mandy
Hi Mandy, I am happy to see your smile. It looks like your wounds are healing well. You are allow to cheat on chocolate and they do look delicious! 😊 I can imagine the join of a shower after a week. Lee and you are an awesome couple! That was sweet of Lee to wash your hair. Good to know about lemon juice for underarms, I should try it. I wish good news from the hospital. You are on my mind and I am send good vibes. I have a good feeling that both of you will travel again soon. A lot of love from Portugal. ❤
Sue, thank you so much for your wonderful comment and your kind words. It is always so lovely to hear from you, and we would like to send a huge hug your way. Wishing you all the best xx😍🤗♥️ ~ Mandy

I appreciate your kindness, Deby, thank you. I know exactly how lost and overwhelmed I felt from the beginning of this journey, and I just hope that sharing my experiences can help others. Sending you a big hug and so much gratitude 🙏 🤗😍 ~ Mandy
Thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery to full wellness once again. ❤️
Kelly, thank you so much for your lovely message. I appreciate your kindness and support, and I am so grateful for all of the wonderfully positive comments that I have received from everyone ♥️😍🙏 ~ Mandy
Best thing for underarms is bicarbonate if soda and alcohol 70%. Mix and spray it on.
Oh, that's absolutely brilliant, Vera! I'll look into that as want to steer clear of conventional deodorant and antiperspirant. Thank you 🙏😁 ~ Mandy
Always happy to hear from you ❤... 🤞🏾For the hospital appointment x
Thank you so much, Jase! It is always so lovely to hear from you too, and I really appreciate your support 🙏🤗😍 ~ Mandy

Thank you so much, Jack, that's so kind of you 🙏🤗♥️ ~ Mandy
Genius with lemon juice. 😂🍋
And thanks for the tip about day 4❗️
I couldn't believe how effective the lemon juice was, Erica 🤗👏 I just wish I'd known beforehand about both the odor after 1½ weeks of being unable to wash under the dressing on my left side, and of the Day 4 depression! I do hope this will be helpful to others. Thank you so much for your lovely comment xx🙏🤗
Sending much love and prayers to you ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for your kindness and support, Diane 🙏😍🤗 ~ Mandy
Also-nobody tells you that whilst on chemotherapy the time between thinking that you might need the loo to really needing the loo diminishes hugely! 😂
Oh no! Thank you for sharing this extremely useful information, Serendipity! xx🙏🤗
I used baby wipes for sensitive skin after surgery, it helped with odor.
Ah, that's such a great tip, Elizabeth, thank you. I just wasn't expecting such a strong odor, and thankfully the lemon juice worked a treat 🤗👌
As always sending you light and love……Jill

Fab video, Mandy x
Thank you so much, Imo! I wasn't sure if this was something that I should share as I thought it might put people off 😳 It really did surprise me just how much my left underarm would smell after 1½ weeks without being washed 🤗🤣
Your surgery scar looks exactly like mine. Take very good care of your left arm and hand. You will be at risk of lymphedema. Not a big deal if cared for properly.
I'm so pleased with my scar, as had seen some really disturbing ones on various FB groups. My surgeon was excellent, and I think he did an amazing job. I do lymphatic drainage every morning: Dr Perry's Big 6, and also my arms. I've been lying on my left side a lot more but don't know if that's a good idea. Have you had any issues with lymphedema, Lise?
@@FrugalTravellers Hi, yes, my scar is very good too. One little pucker my surgeon seemed surprised about near my " cleavage", but he was the doctor's doctor. I lucked out.
As for lymphedema, you are being wonderfully proactive. That is great.
I was told I " might" get it, but aside from physio therapy after surgery, I had nothing special done. It wasn't until a year and a half-ish later that I developed lymphedema. It isn't bad, but adds to the weird feeling one has after this kind of surgery. I don't like it, but have become used to it. I wear a custom sleeve to help keep lymph pumping and have lymph drainage done once in a while. Would do it regularly, but where I live, this procedure is not covered by our usual medical. This is billed american style which is unfortunate. About 145.00-155.00 a session.
If you do get lymphedema, which you may well not, because you are ahead of the curve with prevention, do wear a sleeve no matter how mild it is at first. It is a steady progression thing. I travelled last fall and it seemed a hassle to wear mine all the time. So I didn't. Now it is noticably bigger. Am back to religiously wearing the sleeve again.
Do avoid sugary things like chocolates. If you had to have a mastectomy, your cancer must have been agressive. Best to be a health fanatic. If you want to look at any of this in depth, I highly recommend getting a copy of one of Naturopathic oncologist Neil McKinney's text books. He really knows his stuff. Regular cancer treatment plus treatments by him saved me.
And kept a friend of mine alive four years after the cancer agency repeatedly told him he was going to die any time now. They had no idea why he was still here but said " keep doing what you are doing." Well, that was the good care McKinney gave him.
I met a woman in her 80s, who had her mastectomy in her 40s. She kept her beautiful hair through chemo ( unlike me) and is still going strong.
May you and I keep on keeping on too.
So happy to see you're doing well!
Thank you so much, Elisabeth, for your kind words and your support ❤️🤗🙏
Well done Mandy and great to see you looking so well .best wishes from Eire ❤

100 thumbs up - 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Robert! You are a star 🌟🤩🤗 ~ Mandy
Thank you so much, Robert. A big thumbs up to you, too. 👍👍👍👍👍
No problem on that. Just used 70% Isopropyl Alcohol on a ball of cotton, no need to wet and soaped. No smell. Also my OB/GYN surgeon prescribed CUTASEPT, a spray when putting on new dressing for my long vertical abdominal wound, nothing touched my skin but one or two spray, fights infection and QUICKLY DRIED THE WOUND and SCABS FORMED quickly so WOUND GOT CLOSED.
Thank you so much for sharing this great information, Victoria. I hadn't thought about using 70% Isopropyl Alcohol on my underarms, but that's an excellent idea! The wound healed really well, as you'll see in the next video. I really think my whole food plant-based diet assisted in the swift recovery, as my body was getting such wonderfully healthy and delicious food 🤗😍
❤
Thank you so much, Serendipity 🙏😍❤️
Chocolate , milk etc. is such a no no for breast cancer. Esp not long after treatment. May you have very good luck. But don't push it. Been there.
Thank you so much for sharing this great advice, Lise. I'm on a 90% whole food plant-based diet, and had my last alcoholic drink on 31st December 2022. I love chocolate, but my new favourite chocolate treat is to make a delicious mix of raw cacao; almond butter; frozen blueberries and coconut oil, and eat that knowing that I'm getting antioxidents as well as a delicious taste. Do you have any new favourite healthy sweet treats?
Sending healing thoughts your way mandy,it's true people never talk about after surgery healing. Hope you and Lee are enjoying Portugal ,its a lovely place
Thank you so much, Julie. Your healing thoughts are so gratefully received 🙏🤗 We are enjoying being back housesitting in Portugal, and are making good use of our time by catching up on our editing, as Lee wants to catch up to real tim, so he's just about to start on the Philippines series! It's what I'm working on with these videos as well, as want to share updates with you as they occur.
Good luck with your medical check up, soon all of this will be over and you will have a wonderful life to look forward to. Sending you love and prayers ❤
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, Vivian 🙏🤗 I appreciate your kindness more than I can express, and am sending you love and hugs xx❤️😍 ~ Mandy

may Allah azzawajal bless you sister and grant you speedy recovery. but I think it's time for you to give up alcohol completely. I know it's hard for you are from west and it's hard to break it away. but I think this disease is a wake up call. our lives are precious. and with alcohol Cancer can prop up somewhere else. alcohol is known for comprising the immune system and hard on your liver. pls dnt overburden your liver as I am sure it is trying it's best to get rid off any toxins which cancer or the treatment might have created.
Thank you so much for your excellent advice and your wise comment, VICEGERENT. You'll be happy to hear that my last alcoholic drink was actually 31st December 2022... 6 months before being diagnosed with cancer. My body and mind just decided they didn't want to drink anymore, and I am sure that this greatly improved my recovery. I don't miss alcohol at all, and I absolutely love waking up with a clear head every single day... life is too short to cloud your mind and have hangovers! 🤗🙏 ~ Mandy
