Loved your talk. Watched Storm over Everest and you appeared strong and Neil even asked you to give your oxygen to Sandy. I'm going to use your mantra for my future endeavors. I liked Charlotte Fox too. After climbing Everest, it was sad to learn of her falling down the stairs to her death at age of 60. Well done, Lene
This talk really motivated me, Lene. As such a resilient, adventurous and pragmatic woman, you’ve been a personal heroine and role model of mine since I first read Jon Krakauer’s original article. Everyone has their own personal Everest and your experiences with mental programming to achieve your goal is so inspiring to me. Thank you!
Tragic tough season on the Mountain of Mountains! Rob Hall scott Fischer Andy harold Harris Doug hansen Yasoko and more all died these are some of best climbers in the world and all died not from Avalanche but stuck in death zone bad storm and Rob Hall trying to save Doug Hanson Rob the men of Men refused to abandon Doug who was already gonna die FOR SURE! Cost Rob his life! So so so sad he never should have died had he left for south summit perhaps a later rescue attempt he would have lived! He will live forever in my heart and mind and im sure many see his dead body in route somewhere between hillary step and south summit! Ugh!also whatever anyone says about Anatolli especially john Krakauer he saved lives many lives putting his own life at risk over and over !!! Strong man??? Strong spirit? Only to die 1 year later Christmas day in an Avalanche near mt Everest! Life is so unpredictable but to me he is a true hero yes he was stubborn not really into climbing as a guide hand holding bit when at its worst he rose up with wings bigger than an eagle and did what maybe a handful could or WOULD DO!!!! Rob hall HERO-- ANATOLLI--HERO!!!!
Oh and harold harris hero too to come back for Rob others too names leaving me now but we are all put to a test some THE TEST AND THESE MEN ALL PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS! All of them make me wanna be a better man!!!!
She is not Sandy Kill Pittman. History changes with time. When it happened every climber on earth understood how Sandy triggered the disaster. I remember. Facts matter.
I think, based on how those survivors behaved, that most would want to be more like Lene... Not the person who was short-roped up, was saved by one person's dexamethasone injection, guided through a monster storm by the brave Neil Beidleman, saved from the clutches of an 8000m death zone due to the heroic one-man rescue effort by Anatoli Boukreev, and then totally denied said heroism, brushing it off as just doing one's job. Beck Weathers said it best... That mountain revealed who everyone really was, and some came out of it heroes while others would probably be embarrassed at the full scope of their actions on that May 1996 Everest summit push.
It all seems a bit callous to be making such a great deal about an expedition to a summit that cost so many people their lives - in keeping with the commercial nature that pervades mountain climbing I guess. To the summit and safe return was a luxury afforded to very few of the climbers that day.

Hi. Who are you thinking about? I was not helped. I believe you might mistake me with another woman on our team. If you want more details you can find that in my Book Climbing High available on Amazon and THE CLIMB by Anatoli Boukreev.
Lene Gammelgaard was one of the survivors in the best condition and even gave her oxygen to Sandy Hill so it's pretty unfair to criticise her like that.
Conny1908 we have all seen the documentaries and read the narratives of what they believe occurred that night but only the survivors knows. And here’s the funny thing, everyone that was on that mountain that night probably recalls things slightly differently too because each person literally was mentally and emotionally battling for survival. I prefer to hear people tell me their view of the events then to rely on narratives written for television. I listened to this lady and heard HER story. IT IS HERS RO TELL. To the speaker. Thank you for sharing your story. 🙏 I’m glad you survived this disaster. I’m very sorry you lost some friends on this journey.

Anatoli didn’t help her. She was strong enough to walk back to the tents once Neal located the camp. Anatoli helped Charlotte and Sandy. And so what? These people spent the night caught in a storm in highest place on Earth. Wouldn’t you need help? Wouldn’t you need to be saved?
Scott should have turned around and come down with you. Put his ego aside and Live to climb another day. If you don't make it down. The climb doesn't count...
Sandy Kill Pittman. Rich privileged.... demanded the Sherpa who was to set ropes, to carry her up piggyback. She caused the delay. Her crisis killed 8 climbers. SMH
What a boring speech, to the summit and back, she repeats this 100 times, she could have just said that, all you need for a ted talk is a pretty face and blond hair and a slogan repeated endlessly
Sure there's a ghoulish audience for this story, but it's only because glory seeking individuals weren't competent enough to make the turn-around that its a story at all.
At 7:00 ... this is just an inexperienced climber who should have NEVER been on this mountain. STOP idealizing this person. SHE is the reason why people are dead.
No one died because of Lene. She got back to the tents on her own. She was pressured into giving her O2 to someone who repeatedly collapsed. Lene understood the assignment.
I like that you seem to be one of the few who seem to appreciate Boukreev and speak well of him. He spoke well of you in his book also.

LENE❤😊I ADMIRE YOUR STRENGTH, MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY!❤
I thought she’s around 80 year old now, but surprisingly she’s quite young.
I think people here are thinking that this woman is Sandy Pittman, the NY socialite. No she is not.
Ummm no one

No one is thinking that.
@desvega5849 But didn't Neil direct Lene to give her O2 to Sandy? I don't care if Lene was stronger, that was a foolish call.
I am cuurently reading your book" Climbing high"- and Ilike the book Good luck

It would have been nice if she'd given credit to the men who helped her get off Mt. Everest that night and saved her life.

@@lenegammelgaardutube people are mistaking you with Sandy Pittman. I assume.
Scott got high altitudes sickness, Lene didn't.
The only way to prevent it is to stay low.

Repiting «to the summit And save return» put down the speech. I believe Anatolij help you And with out hes help you will not be here.
I agree, mention it once, and maybe once again in the end

I thought the yak carried her 😉
@@courtneygooden9609 The Yak bulls carry supplies up as far as base camp
She wasn’t piggy backed. She was short roped. And she’s not responsible for the deaths of all those people. The disaster was down to many factors.
No she didn't!
Piggy-back? Literally?
