Discovering the Scenic Macclesfield Canal || A Narrowboat Journey Up Heartbreak Hill || Ep159

- We wanted to travel onto the Macclesfield and Peak Forest Canal last year, but our plans were stopped because of the canal closures, due to water shortages. Heading onto the Macclesfield on our own narrowboat is special to us as we have only done part of this canal on a hire boat.
We travel with Pete & Caroline on One Day More and tackle these amazing locks. Paul & Anthony together with Dexter live full time, but manage to work part time, on a 57' Narrowboat, cruising the UK Canals and finding out what it's really like to be Living on a boat exploring the Nature and scenery on some of the best canals and rivers in the UK onboard a Bickerstaffe Narrowboat called Morning Star. New for 2023 we are having a brand new narrowboat from Oakums Narrowboats and are taking advantage of lithium, solar, electric propulsion and the boat will be coal and gas free.

Fun to watch this having just done this stretch ourselves. Heartbreak Hill is much easier when there are two boats and you can partner up it together. I, Pauline, was exhausted by the time I had done all of that.

Dexter looked very smart and handsome and ready for the warmer weather after his hair cut. 24 locks wow. I was looking at the Hatton 21 flight on the Grand Union for our next cruise but my brother said "no" lol Wouldnt like to do long flights if its busy. Funny you said about water shortage last year, this time we couldnt get to Oxford as there was too much water so the locks wouldnt empty enough, never thought of too much water. Lovely to be in the same area, same mooring as what tempted you to buy a narrowboat. Nice you had company. Happy cruising to you three xxx

A few weeks back I stumbled upon your channel completely by chance and I am so happy I did. Watching your videos has become a nightly thing for me. I usually watch one or two just before I go to bed as I find them so peaceful, relaxing, entertaining and educational. And funny! You guys crack me up :)
To date I've watched about 25 or so and I'm glad I'm so far behind as I've got lots to watch to get caught up! :)
I've known about the canals in England for years but never took the time to really understand just how expansive they are. Since I've started watching your channel I've delved into some of the history of the canals and find it absolutely fascinating. What a wonderful lifestyle you three lead!
I understand, as you've said Anthony, it's not all sunshine and roses but living life anywhere never is. You took the risk of selling your house to pursue a passion and a dream and I am so pleased that you are sharing that with us!

Love the history of the canals too and it is hard to comprehend that these 200 year old structures still work today.

It's exciting to see the canals being rebuilt and a new-found sense of pride in the systems. I think the CRT called the canals a National Treasure and I would have to agree.
It boggles my mind to think of the tremendous amount of work that went into building them in the first place. I believe the restoration work honours all the people who built and worked on the canals. In a way, they left a legacy for all to enjoy!

For some strange reason, my brain thinks Morning Star is zooming through the canal really quickly this week! I'm not sure if it was the editing or the content itself, something seemed a bit livelier this week, love it!

When Paul mentioned the name of the dog in the picture at the beginning, brought back memories of my Border Collie "Flash", he died 17 yrs ago. What a great picture of this Flash, a beautiful pup.
I see the groomers got out all of Dexter's grey hair. I think I need to visit that groomer to get out all my grey hair too.

Those first two locks as you set off, Dave and I walked from Wheelock to those locks with are then 12 month old grandson. Having now moved down there I cross that road bridge often and look at the locks thinking of that day. 💙💙🐾

I love the old locks (it seems like a sort of living archeological site of historical engineering), so you know I loved this video! (Though SO many locks must have been quite a workout!). And how cool to have moored up in the same place that was so memorable to you. Thanks again for sharing.
It really is a working museum James. It was a tiring day but great to do it with friends. I know, can’t believe we moored there in our hire boat that was our test run to see if we could cope with life on the cut. Have a lovely weekend ❤

Happy Friday! 😊 It's almost over for you though. Still early evening for me. I just got my internet service back since it went off at about 7pm yesterday. I am very behind but I did get a lot of reading 📚done with no internet and streaming available so there's that. Love seeing Dexter smell the daffodils and was hoping there wasn't a bee in there. I love that metal footbridge. Very pretty and I recall seeing it before in some vlog or another. ❤ Take care and have a great weekend!

At that time there's not a lot to do but sleep especially since the house got pretty chilly. @@anthonysmith-storey9247 First and foremost I'm a photographer. I do night shooting - landscapes and separately flowers & trees, that's if they agree to it. Yes I did just say that. I ask their permission. If they say no, I move on. I do cartooning - Prismacolor pencils on Cold Press WC paper. They look like crayons that way. I do watercolor painting & acrylic on canvas. I have a graphic design training background so my paintings lean that direction. And recently I've been buying semi-precious stones, findings, leather, etc....to make jewelry. I haven't done any of that in years, so I'm praying my pieces turn out well.
So Anthony, what creative things do you do? I've very sure Paul isn't the only creative in the family. 🙂

We have a Labradoodle too, Dani, but right now we’re letting her hair grow for winter but she’s a bit curlier than Dex so to long and it mats. Been a great Easter, my mum would have turned 109 on the 8th so thought about her. Take care guys.

My gosh, your drawings are absolutely incredible. I thought they were photographs. It was absolutely fascinating watching you go through those locks. I saw the date of 1800 and something on the side. Is the long boat like you have have a history on those locks? How long have those boats been around and what was their purpose back in the decade before? Fascinating. The lock will have been built around then. It is amazing how they still work. Such geniuses the Victorians. The boats will have been used for transportation of goods such as pottery and coal etc. it is amazing when you delve into the history of the canals. Have a lovely week and take care ❤

Hi Paul, Anthony and Dexter- Dog. Dexter is looking very handsome after his grooming.That's a long trip with 24 locks, you both must have been exhausted. I've noticed on many lock stairways there are no hand rails! That would scare me. Some of those locks look really deep, do you get a strange feeling being surrounded by high wet walls when your low in the lock? Anthony, loving your scarf. In one lock Paul motored up, and there was black smoke coming from your exhaust (Paul looked surprised). I thought something had gone wrong for a moment, as I have never seen black smoke form your boat. But glad all was OK. Did I hear right "The Bleeding Warf", I know Paul said it a couple of times. Hey. Dexter looks so much younger when he has been trimmed bless him. I was so pleased with the scarf. Really kind of Beth too. We were exhausted but so much easier with friends. It feels less strange being in the lock that being at the top on the edge! 😬 The boat has just been serviced. It does that when the air filter is due to be changed.
The pub was called the Bleeding Wolf. It has a thatched roof and a thatched howling Wolf on top. Van has been towed back but not sorted the repair yet as everywhere is shut 😞. Happy Easter to you too. Have a lovely weekend ❤

Love Dexter in his spring trim! A great video, springtime is always appealing. A question: the front cover is usually up. Is it strictly a summer thing to sit on the front deck? Or are covers too much of a struggle to raise/ lower?
Hey Paul. Dexter looks so much younger when cut bless him. Re the covers, we never take the front cover off. We don’t sit in the front as we the stern is the largest space. We do take these covers down quite often. Have a great weekend ❤

Glad you are enjoying the vlogs. The real name for this stretch is called the Cheshire locks. It is called Heart Break Hill because there are 31 locks in a 12 mile stretch.
