    Funny how people re-write history to suit their feelings . The Phoenix Coyotes were bankrupt period end of story the league had to take them over financially to protect them from a sale , Balsillie who created Blackberry made a real offer to buy the the team and move them to Western Ontario , the owners wanted to do the deal it was Buttman who blocked it all and Glendale was part of the deal he made with the new ownership group he found and forced the sale too . Glendale was never this free ride move the team and everything will be cool it was a carrot of a fresh new start promise made by Buttman to the new owners . Now they are bankrupt again and guys like Biz want to act all surprised and make excuses for the failure that has never been anything but a failure , they couldn't fill the seats for playoff games , that says it all .

    • @buzztheblocker89
      @buzztheblocker89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Umm...this itself is a funny interpretation of history as well...
      The bankruptcy ordeal was a underhanded financial ploy of then owner Jerry Moyes. He declared bankruptcy and organized the Hamilton, ON sale to Basille without consulting league or owners. Bettman had a right to protest the sale since it would have altered scheduling/travel/etc. The years Moyes claimed to have lost money were the years immediately following the 05 lockout, which the team then consisted of Shane Doan, a couple ham sandwiches, and Coach Gretzky. So no surprise people weren't excited or showing up for games.
      To compound the issue, the bankruptcy ordeal made it harder to recover fan interest. Why would you want to spend $100 on a jersey that may not exist next year? (A question that has lasted over a decade.)
      I guess my point is the bankruptcy was an ownership/management issue and not fan interest. I agree Glendale was a poor decision that also hindered recovery aspects, but if you can still have fans after a decade of uncertainty if your team will exist, very limited playoff success, and hardly a dash of starpower in the lineup, I'd present that as evidence that there is a market in PHX for hockey.
      TLDR: bankruptcy was old owners way to make money from mismanagement. Bettman floundering since to recover. There are fans and it can work in AZ

      You also are oversimplifying moving a team to south western Ontario. Relocating a team to Hamilton would be encroaching on 2 team's territories (Toronto and Buffalo) Balsillie was also a bit of a wild cat, meaning he wasn't respecting the process to relocate or buy a team the way the NHL had set out. You think Bettman, who represents 30 (at the time) owners, is going to let some guy break all the rules just to get what he wants just because he's rich?

      Also, buttman is a moron! But he wanted to keep the team here to try and grow the market in the region! That’s the point. Moving the team to western Ontario does nothing to grow the market in areas it non hockey markets. The game has grown a ton out here since the coyotes came from Manitoba and them leaving would be devastating.

    Tempe is the right spot. These next 3 to 4 years the Coyotes could trade the majority of their 1st rd picks for more picks and trade for 3rd year proven players and have a squad for the year the new stadium opens.

    I was at that Ottawa game with a bunch of friends who live in Scottsdale.
    They were telling me that the hockey market is huge there now for kids, it’s just expensive to get their kids started in it. All of my friends there actually hated hockey until I talked them into going to games so I know they are being honest.
    Growing up in the desert,
    I know hundreds of people who live in Phoenix. Every single one says that they hate driving to Glendale because it’s just too far and too much traffic. Scottsdale/Tempe is the fun part of the city nowadays. They tell me they would go to games if the arena was there.

    • @calibabyy
      @calibabyy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Idk saying it’s too far is pretty sad… it’s about 30 minute from Scottsdale, 30 minutes really from any part of metro. I drive about an hour to SAP to watch the sharks play. And I do that about 10 times a year if not more. Their team just isn’t great and never really has been. You need something worth seeing if you are going to make the trek, and that’s coming from a sharks fan lol

I spend quite a bit of time in the south mountain area and go to games frequently when in town. Never takes us more then an hour for weekday games. I even double checked on waze to make sure I wasn’t crazy and there isn’t a day at rush hour during the week that says over an hour. 10 games is above average for your typical fan which seems like the market the coyotes are after.

    One thing most people don’t even realize is that the coyotes attendance isn’t due to how good/bad they are. It’s because the arena takes 1-2 hours to drive to for most of the hockey fans in Phoenix due to rush hour traffic. No one wants to drive that much for a weekday game 41 times a year. But it doesn’t help that they aren’t a successful team. Like RA said, they killed any chance of success for the coyotes when they built the arena in Glendale

    As a Coyote's fan for their entire existence, I couldn't give a crap about these franchise records because they mean nothing. At this point in the season a lot of teams are taking their foot off the gas and getting settled in for their off seasons. The Coyotes are still playing at the highest level they can just to scrape some points off the bottom of the barrel, so the only reason they're getting wins and score and goals right now is because every other team in the NHL knows it's time to relax a bit. Unless your team is on the cusp of a playoff spot, which the Coyotes are not, these franchise records at this time of year mean nothing. Good for Schmaltz. But no one really cares. Just like nobody cared that Gagner previously held the franchise record.

    Move the team to Quebec City already. This is an absolute joke and embarassement to the NHL...

    They won’t even fill ASU’s arena. NHL needs to move that team, they’ve been in rebuild for 90% of their existence

      False..they already have nearly 5000 applications for season ticket holder’s, it will actually be hard to get tickets to a game! Location is in fact the key to succeed.

    So what if Phoenix is a growing City. Hockey would never work in that part of the country Because guess what? Nobody plays or watch this sport Because It's not in their DNA, not organic. So stop shoving Mickey mouse teams in non hockey market. End the joke, move the Coyotes. And by the way, Florida, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Anaheim should do the same.
