  • Its time to start work on my Trabant!
    The first thing that I want to tackle on it is the brakes.. They are very weak and prone to jamming, so today I rip out everything braking related and had planes to rebuild wheel cylinders and so one... But something went wrong.

    Rebuilding versus replacing is often a financial thing for some, but, the rebuild aspect is always a fun choic for those of us who like to take stuff apart and fix them... :D

    Back when I was wrenching (before digital cameras), you always did one side at a time on a drum brake job, so you could refer to the other side for reassembly.

      Thats also what I normally do... But pictures is such an easy way to help yourself these days... :)

    I am amazed that you got all four hubs apart on your P60 without the specially puller! I had to build a puller to take mine apart; I believe you're correct that someone has been inside those drums before you, and recently. You may want to check for play in the hinge joints before you start assembling the front brake system, otherwise you'll have to take it all apart again to change the axle stubs... Sometimes they like to take the rear bearing with them when you knock them out.

      Thanks! I will look into it..... Everything in this car is new to me... So I will most likely make some rookie mistakes.. :)

    Nice rebuild! Simple breaking system is a pleasure to work on. Good that the parts are cheap in this case. On other cars a mistake could ruin your project budget😂. Anyway, good progres with Trabant. When you have the brakes done, it's Like a half of the car done😄

      The brakeshoes was a pretty expensive mistake to order wrong... but maybe they can help someone locally in the future... ;)
      Other then that this car is cheap to work on!

    Are you not concerned about the Brakefluid corroding the sealing surfaces with the residual Air in the cylinder? Also have you heard about DOT 5? Since you probably completely rework the whole system, you may upgrade to that.

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure I follow? There will be no air in the brakemaster cylinder from now on :)
      Yes I will most likely use dot5 if the rubbers can cope... :)

    • @michelarneburg
      @michelarneburg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SeasideGarage In the video it seems like you left Air in the brakemaster cylinder after lubricating the parts with DOT 4. As far as I know DOT 4 is hydroscopic and will absorb the moisture of the residual air wich may deplete the corrosion inhibiting additives and then corrode the sensitive sealing surfaces.

      @SeasideGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michelarneburg Ah-... no I am not worried about that... If It was to be on a shelf for many years then It could maybe be an issue... But in this case it will be filled with brakefluid and bleed so everything is "washed" through. :)
      But you are right... it is very hydroscopic!

    • @michelarneburg
      @michelarneburg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SeasideGarage Yes, I guess that amount of Air could not affect much anyways. This aggressive stuff, in those sensitve components with thier important role I always find scary.
      Can not wait to see the next videos, thank you!

      @@michelarneburg Its a very good idea to be very careful.... Even more so on a 1 circuit system! :)
