Not only was the Mk.7 gun and its 2700-lb AP shell ballistically superior to the 18.1-inch shell of the Yamato (which had notoriously bad dispersion), the Iowa class had far superior radar fire control, which would have enabled first salvo hits at ranges in excess of 20,000 meters. Moreover, with a five knot advantage over Yamato, the Iowa could dictate the range at which the engagement took place, staying within its immune zone and hammering Yamato until her directors and rangefinders were disabled--at which point Iowa could close to a killing range. It should also be noted that, at long range, the Yamato's horizontal protection was eminently vulnerable to the Iowa's 16-inch guns.
What you say is all just theory as the Yamato and or Musashi never met in a one in one confrontation with any of the Iowas and the reasons being by the time the Iowas were launched they played a secondary role to the new capital ship the aircraft carrier. Also the US navy had no intentions of any of the Iowas seeking out the two Japanese behemoths to confront them as they didn't want to risk losing them for despite what you may think it was a real possibility. Whatever way you want to look at it the Iowas had a really boring time of it in WW2. Sure they could throw up large anti aircraft barrage but that wasn't what they were designed for, for they were designed to sink enemy battleships a job some of the repaired older battleships that sank at Pearl Harbour did but not the Iowas. So all this theory of your and others was never put to the ultimate test and remains just that....... theory.

Go back into JAPANESE records for information on the dispersion of Yamato's 18.1-inch guns. Large dispersion patterns also affected other Japanese battleships and cruisers, whose accuracy at long range was dubious. By the way, in the REAL world, dispersion tends to be in range, not bearing.

The Yamato had excellent and advanced optics for its main gun fire control. The Iowa had dangerously accurate radar fire control for its main guns. And both ships fired shells that were perfectly capable of penetrating the others armor. So, who would win the fight? Whoever found the range first.
In real life, Iowa would have used its 6kt speed advantage to withdraw, and called in an airstrike.
