The only way I can think to save that Cathar was to risk it, and crack the Map Token on him: if you get land, nothing changes and you get one land out of the deck; if you get a permanent, Cathar becomes a 3/3 (base), and when you flip to night, if you don't play anything that turn, he becomes a 4/4 (3/3 base +1/+1).
Someone could probably calculate the odds the next card would be land to see if that was objectively the better play (with the known information at the time).
I see completely different decks if I switch decks. It’s insane. Some days I’m allowed to climb and do nothing but win, and others I just get smashed with impossible bs game after game. I know people say it’s not in standard ranked, but if you try a deck that has off meta cards all of a sudden you face other weird decks as well, that just happen to counter your strategy. Infuriating. Or maybe I’m just really unlucky 10 games in a row every few days.
I hope this video gets as many views as it deserves. This is peak Arena content like we'd expect it to be. Because "Shuffler is fine" gets absolutely TROUNCED by "matchmaker is fine".
Love to see this "journey to Mythic" style of content! Thanks for all you do CGB! Hand of Justice has been doing a series of "journey" vids with mono-red, mono-white, boros humans, naya humans. I like the meta journeys more than the creative jank builds. Cheers!
I think the system has good intentions as it tries to match decks with similar metrics but unfortunately it doesn't work out in practice. They should just leave it alone so we don't feel cheated@@AtomicCenturion
Nice to see you finally get a sampling of what people refer to by rigged. Typical day is 80%+ on the draw, 70%+ bad matchup or mirror, 70%+ mana flood or hose and "the shuffler is fine'. now that you know how my day goes perhaps 5-6 of 7 days a week, how do you like it? :-P i watch you play because usually it provides a more reasonable experience and I can at least hope to enjoy it sometime.
This is just, on average, not true. There are 2 players in every game. One of them needs to be on the draw. People need to actually track their games because I felt the same way until I started looking at stats.
20:27, you could get 1 counter on it AND flip it to night-time, which makes it have 4 toughness on the opponents' turn and therefore not vulnerable to the Virtue.
At 33:44 I think the play was definitely to attack with all. If they double block a vanguard, they let Adeline through and go to 2. They probably wouldn't have - they would have blocked how they did - but it was a better attack. The game was lost by more than 3 life, so it didnt REALLY matter, but worth considering for the future. Love the vids man, and you were clearly not at 100% mentally after an 18 hour grind lol.

I played your Azorious Control deck to hit Mythic for the 3rd time ever this season! Beating mono-red with control to get into Mythic is definitely my greatest magic highlight
The thing that feels the worst in this game is long runs of being on the draw. It feels worse than being on the play feels good. It gets me to stop playing. I can’t believe we are still here and that WotC has not prioritized finding some way to try to balance it out more
At least the Control player gets to experience the receiving end of draw-go-wipe. I wonder what a your climb with a control deck for your playstyle would have looked like.
The BS of arena (which has been proven btw) combined with mono red aggro is just absolutely ridiculous..I’ll gladly stick to paper only even though i don’t get to play that often
@20:41 I think the better play here is to explore first, targeting the Brutal Cathar. IF you get a +1 counter then you don't play anything, pass the turn, and it flips to become a 4/4. If you get a land, then you proceed with the play as you made it.

This looks like it had a good run overall, but the losses took so much longer than the wins. It won more than it lost, but spent a lot more time losing than winning, which I can see being very painful for a control mage to play.
Mono red IS toilet gaming.. The unfortunate truth is that it gets the job done without even trying to play a game.. R.I.P. CGB on the last game. It hurts to see this happen as a control player 🫣 always love the content though! We all appreciate you!!
I'm not a control player at all, I prefer creature based decks, and Arena is just unplayable at the moment for people like me. I still somehow made it to Mythic but I had to switch to a deck that was just not fun for me.
Try the Pirate deck. It has good game against control and for some reason I avoided it today and reached Mythic for my first time ever. Just joined Mtg Arwam a month ago. Been playing paper magic for years though.
In no world should anyone be subjected to 5 or more straight games on the draw. Wizards NEEDS to fix their fucking game . And that’s not even mentioning the shuffler… don’t get me started on the shuffler
as much that i feel for u, it was good for me to see your struggle with this. sometimes i like to rebuild fun decks i see you play with, like this one. but as i try it, i get flooded with bad matchups and constant beeing on the draw, like loosing 4-5 games in a row or more. every time i got mixed feelings about it. am i that bad? could you be cutting bad games out of videos? did i get screwed by the matchmaking while you get blessed because of beeing a creator? am i just that unlucky? seeing this run did really good for me.
EVERY SINGLE TIME i try to run less than 23 lands i drought like you wouldnt believe. earlier today it was 2 land to opponents 8, another one 3 lands to 7... how is it so hard to draw friggin lands?!

Matchmaker is the real villain of Arena. Shuffler is a street pickpocket compared to 5 families Mafia boss Matchmaker.

Those games were hard to stomach. A majority of us know exactly how you feel
CGB! Loving the "No QuEsTiOnS!" Makes me laugh every time.
in the game against golgari couldn't you have put a map counter on the cathar and then flipped it to make it a 6/4 so it wouldn't die to virtue?
Only if it's a nonland explore.
It was the sigarda it would have worked
Actually 4/4 because it wouldn't be a human type anymore but yes, it would have avoided Virtue.
Tilt. And wrong play inevitably means more engagement with the video.
I think the response is "no questions" 😂
