Koka's Drone Box No. 1

  • I love four-voice polyphony. There's something about the number four. I like it when four objects converse with each other.
    This is my Drone Box No. 1. It's a four-voice physical synthesiser, for drones and more. The sound is produced by turning stepper motors that sit on the wooden box. Different objects attached to the motors change the character of the sound. Selecting and attaching the objects is like physical mixing. A pinecone adds rich buzz and makes the sound more like a square wave synthesiser, an egg doesn't do much and leaves the work to the box, a paper cup makes the sound rounder and a brass coil provides resonant overtones. I exchange objects all the time.
    You can control the box with MIDI, either from a keyboard or from a computer. There is also a clever automatic voice management mode, so you can improvise without thinking which motor to turn. I've added pitch bending, vibrato, different kinds of tremolo and some other expressions. I'll add more.
    And the second iteration of the box will have a single button on the side, so you can create a playlist of MIDI files on a SD card and play music during your morning coffee, just like with any music player. I’ll design more drone boxes.

    So THAT's where you put the chair! I'm still amazed at the melodic stepper motors. I remember repairing a stepper drive and testing it for the first time and heard the change in sound the motor made with change in frequency fed to the drive. I would love to see more videos with different objects creating different sounds. Also, was there a plan regarding the size/shape of the box, or did you just use one that was readily available. Were acoustics part of the box design and did you consider different wood choices?

    • @nikoladze
      @nikoladze  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot! I prefer to make my boxes. The box is made with a special birch composite (2mm thick). After a lot of testing I ended up with these dimensions. The box itself rounds the sound, makes it feel more like a bassoon. As for the resonator objects, they can have a great impact. I made four more drone boxes and I'll post some videos soon.

    Hi! I'm a student of Music and Technology in Argentina. I wanted to do an alike proyect as your "Stepper Miniature" artefact that you have posted on Vimeo, for the Electronic Lutheria course I'm currently studying at the University.
    I was wondering if you have a code for it,
    if you used an Arduino for the proyect and which one? (because of how many pins it required)
    and how you attached your motor to the wood structure you build.
    I'm amazed and inspired by your work. I think it's quite unique and stimulating. Also, I can tell you've searched for specifics and personal esthetics in your builds and your choice of objects. I think that's pretty cool.
    Anyways, I hope you can help me with my questions. And if you can't, that's cool too.

    • @nikoladze
      @nikoladze  ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, you're not a prick. And then you actually ask one of the most fundamental questions of all time. The entire art of phrnomenology tries every day, all day, to answer your question, yet it has no simple answers. It's only as good or valuable as it's meaningful to the people who like it. And it never ceases to amaze me that I'm not the only crazy person who is entertained and aesthetically charged by the experience of things like a pine cone, an egg, a cup and a coil playing music on an electromechanical wooden box.
