  • Alright, so my local friends that keep small layer flocks wanted to know what I could do for #startedpullets so I ordered their (and mine) favorites.
Took a gamble on a rare breed assortment, as well as hatchery choice males for one of our local meat buyers.
This adventure won't interfere with our work on the American Bresse. They will remain what we breed ourselves.
Not sure if I'll do it again for my friends, with this bulk grow, but the experience will be fun and add further to the knowledge bank.
It's been awhile since I've grown other varieties, so follow along as we grow these.
    Included will be #bufforpington , #jerseygiant , #rhodeislandred , #easteregger , #oliveegger, #bielefelder , #wyandotte , #blackcopper
Maybe more in another batch. It depends on how many breakfast layers my urban friends need.

Yeah I've been entertained plenty just by poking my head into the hatch room to look at them. I see variations already at 3 days old, in things like leg stance, activity level, curiosity level, overall size vs their peers. Like in the Orpingtons, I saw differences in head width. So in theory, I could sort them by that and then track the growth from the wider heads vs the more narrow heads and see how that shakes out with who ended up with better dual purpose structure.

I can’t wait to see what colors the ameracauna ( or however it’s spelled) grow to be. I got two at my local RK and they are now 10 weeks and not the colors I was expecting, one was pale yellow with thick brown line down the back with the thin black lines on each side and crazy face patterns turned out Brown with some ok marking’s and Dark grey beard. The other I can’t remember it’s fluff color but it most beautiful peach and white colors 😊

I'm sorry this is from someone been raising chickens for 45 yrs .Poultry hatchery do not have ameraucana. They are actually Easter Egger not true chicken breed .

Yeah technically they're Easter Eggers and they're a hybrid that won't breed true. But they'll be fun layers. The true breed Ameraucana have 5 APA recognized colors in Wheaten, Black, Blue, Silver and White. Anything else would be a considered a project color that isn't recognized, or it's actually an Easter Egger hybrid. To get the purebred birds you usually need to find a private breeder for them, especially if you want the true blue eggs rather than green.

What are you paying for those breeds in your area for day-old chicks?

I'm going to do a cost break down video of what it cost to bring them in and then what it costs with today's feed prices to grow them out. After tax my bill was $635, so it breaks down to an average of $5.08/ea. The Rhode Island Red cockerels were $0.50/ea since they offer them at a discount when you buy more than 50 pullets. Some of them may have been cheaper from a farm store since they get a better quantity discount to start with, but there might have been residual shipping stress to deal with if I had gone that route.
