Lyrics:
And another one bites the dust
Oh why can I not conquer love?
And I might have thought that we were one
Wanted to fight this war without weapons
Well, I've got thick skin and an elastic heart,
But your blade - it mightbe too sharp
I'm like a rubber band until you pull too hard,
Yeah, I may snap and I move fast
But you won't see me fall apart
'Cause I've got an elastic heart
I've got an elastic heart
Yeah, I've got an elastic heart

I see this as an alcoholic father and his daughter. He's stuck in a cage because he won't get better and she rebels and tries to leave because she's tired of taking care of him but he won't let her. He tries to keep her caged with him because he doesn't want to be alone but then finally in the end he realizes she deserves more and let's her go, but she doesn't want to leave him because he is, after all, her father. However, he won't leave because he's still stuck in his own cage. He "wants" to, but he "can't." This doesn't have to be interpreted as alcoholism though, same thing with being stuck his own cage of drugs, or even depression. I just personally relate to the alcohol theory.
That is a good interpretation though,
But of course the main purpose they are supposed to be the same people, she just fights of the bad in her, the end is showing its hard to let go, but she came out stronger. (I'm not saying it down to a T) so that might sound odd.
samluvscherries very inspiring text ;)
Caprice Rafiq I think videos are meant for everyone to interpret it in whatever way they connect most with. The way you see it is beautiful as well. :)
Haydster Simpson haha fantastic.
samluvscherries - An interesting interpretation. I'm interested if it comes from any personal experience? I interpreted it as a father and daughter, but saw it as just about a daughter growing up. That she has reached an age where she is leaving the cage and her father and becoming her own person. That he wants to cling onto her as a child, but she is becoming a woman.
Thank god we have TH-cam comments or else I’d forget what year I’m in.
finally something original
@@tukinieves4975 except this comment is also being parroted for likes. It's a never ending cycle of attention seeking dipshits
Hi Ginny!
Lol yes that's right
I don't even try to understand those people anymore, I just ignore
This video made me cry because when you realize that you can escape an illness but your father cannot, it is devastating.
Becoming one with the thing that's trying to hurt you is a whole new level of understanding. My gosh sia has got some talent
the part where maddie tries to get shia out of the cage but he can't get out reminds me of those moments when you are trying to get someone out of something like depression or anorexia or a disorder like that, and just like maddie ran out, it looks so easy to just leave it, but for some people it's difficult to get out of the cage, like something pulls you back, you are afraid of what people will say, or you are just to attached to it. then people trying to desperately pull you out but you can't no matter how you try and im crying help
it could also be trying to get out of an addiction to drugs or alcohol or bad habits like cutting or stuff like that
Honestly, kind of how I feel about the idea of being myself. I want to but I don't know how. In this case, I am Shia who can't get out of the cage..
laci Tippett I feel the same. In my case, sadness started to be daily...and my cage.
the exhausting part is pretend the whole day 4 the others, so they don't dive stupid monologues of how living, when they either know how.
best wishes
+Ximena Perez Ikr? I always haft to pretend to be the person I used to be when really, I've changed like almost a year ago. My family thinks some 5 year old little girl who's not ready for boys yet and I'm in 8th grade. But yeah, I feel pretty caged everyday😔

@Chance Roberson. The girl in the video is Maddie Ziegler from Dance Moms. She does the dances in a few of Sia's videos.

It’s truly so beautiful. As an adult I relate to it so much more. Anyone who has anything bad to say about this video needs their hard drive checked. It’s art.
@@AA-ji2qg As an adult who is suspended in animation full of life romances from the past 63 years I have felt this Elastic Heart Musical Video to be effective in producing high elevated feelings of puppy love that I have felt in my own preteen years in between 8 and 14 years old. Highlighted romance tectonics leave me reliving a preteen romance of which was tragically left behind me some 54 years ago when I was 11. The 14 year old sister of my 12 year old love had come in between us to sever our relationship. Sadly it had major repercussions in my life ahead of me because I had needed this, my first preteen relationship to succeed. Outside forces took it's toll. The one positively wonderful experience that I can take from this Elastic Heart Music Video, is that I can relate to many of the examples of what I went through as an eleven and twelve year old boy myself through the physical actions and motions and feelings of The Elastic heart music video of 2015. 😌😔😌~ ❤❤🔥❤🎠 M a y 21st 2024 🥲
I can't even imagine how emotional this was to film
Jessie Starkweather why?
Pyrodermoid Dragon because it's extremely emotional, like most art is
I don't think so, music videos like movies usually take lots of takes to film only some seconds, that could be exahusting, I'm not saying they didn't enjoy it but it was definitelly not as emotional as you see in the video were they put all shots toghether with the music. The 5 minutes you are seeing probably took like at least 8 hours to film, not to mention that they practiced it a lot o times before filming it
Quinjao: Yes, it probably took hours to film, which makes it all the more difficult for the actors/dancers to film. There’s definitely, without a doubt, an emotional component from shia and maddie.

My father died yesterday. We had a very tumultuous and complex relationship, and I hadn't seen him for a decade when he passed. He was physically and emotionally abusive, but at times he would be super loving and caring. I never knew which version of him I would get. I always wanted to find a way to reach him but realized I couldn't. This is the one song that really sums up our relationship.

''Shia & Maddie are both representing the heart. Maddie is the strong representation of the heart. She's representing how naive and innocent yet strong the heart is. She's young which shows she hasn't fully experienced heartache. She's a fighter. Shia is representing how guarded and damaged the heart is. The cage is there to symbolize a barrier which is protecting the heart from heartache. Because Maddie hasn't experienced it she has no problem leaving the cage and teasing Sia about it, but after feeling bad she steps back in. Sia seems to try desperately to get her back in the cage because he knows the pain of heartache. It's like they're both trying to teach each other. In the end, Maddie just doesn't understand and tries to pull the guarded Sia out, but he's just too scared. A tug of war. So the heart remains guarded unable to love because both sides of the heart need to leave in order to love. This video shows the hearts back and forth conflict within.''

thanks sherlock.
I keep coming back because it keeps taking on new meanings for me. Like I'm not exactly a model of mental health, but I have given up trying to have the same grip on reality as everyone else, because their grip is too slippery for me, no shade on those that can use the hand holds I can't. I'm an autistic trans woman, my reality is only tangentially related to neurotypical cis people's. I have a heavy gendered read on this video that most likely isn't part of Sia's design, but once you release art it is somewhat out of your hands.
This is one of the ones I gotta hear once in a blue moon. It hits home.
HA
Shia is a brilliant performer and artist. His eyes tell so many stories. They have a haunting innocence
To me, this video has always represented a struggle with addiction, with Shia as the addict and Maddie personifying the addictive substance. He oscillates between hating it, trying to avoid it, then looking for comfort from it. Ultimately he succumbs to the temptation and it wipes out his world entirely. I think of an “elastic heart” as one that can feel a whole range of emotions for an addiction that’s slowly killing them.
to me maddi is the person who love the one who's addicted. Trying to bring they loved on out of the cage
That's a really cool interpretation when you also consider how illicit/illegal substances are referred to as "elastic" in reference to their infinite demand ensuring people would pay whatever price to get them (meaning the perceived value can "stretch" aka elastic)
@@willowfarmer6550 To people of a different personality identity all around the globe 🌎🌏🌍 Maddie is the coolest drug of them all.
SIa put Shia LaBeouf in this masterpiece because both of them had estranged relationships with their parents. Audio and Visual took message home. Brilliant art.

This video is just too powerful. Seeing Shia Lebouf do a character like this, so raw and emotional, I feel that we need to see him in a movie role like this. People really give him a bad wrap but he seems like a good guy with a broken heart.
I am super proud of Shia, life wasn't always easy but he pushed thru
He only thinks he can't get out. The bars are not stopping him.

Oh, why can I not conquer love?
And I might've thought that we were one
Wanted to fight this war without weapons
And I wanted it, and I wanted it bad
But there were so many red flags
Now another one bites the dust
Yeah, let's be clear I'll trust no one
You did not break me
I'm still fighting for peace
I've got thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I'm like a rubber band until you pull too hard
I may snap and I move fast
But you won't see me fall apart
'Cause I've got an elastic heart
I've got an elastic heart
Yeah, I've got an elastic heart
And I will stay up through the night
Let's be clear, won't close my eyes
And I know that I can survive
I'll walk through fire to save my life
And I want it, I want my life so bad
I'm doing everything I can
Then another one bites the dust
It's hard to lose a chosen one
You did not break me
I'm still fighting for peace
I've got thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I'm like a rubber band until you pull too hard
I may snap and I move fast
But you won't see me fall apart
'Cause I've got an elastic heart
I've got thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I'm like a rubber band until you pull too hard
I may snap and I move fast
But you won't see me fall apart
'Cause I've got an elastic heart
I've got thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I'm like a rubber band until you pull too hard
And I may snap and I move fast
But you won't see me fall apart
'Cause I've got an elastic heart
I've got an elastic heart

True love = the love of God!
*God himself went to the cross for you out of love for you as a human being*
Philippians 2:5-8
the whole dance is improvised???
Such an amazing choreographer ... Ryan Heffington ! if i got his name right. But yes, she is also so amazing dancer !
Shia is brilliant in this piece. He is not a dancer yet he performs it brilliantly. It’s a piece of art.
agreed, it was very moving and perhaps his best career performance, difficult to achieve in a music video filmed in a cage.
Shia is A Masterpiece 😭😭
@@tinyhouseranch So is tiny grand participant 12 year old Maddie Ziegler! Maddie is the first scented flower of May! 🥰🌺 April >< 24 >< 2024
I see the video as a father daughter relationship. The father doesnt want his daughter to grow up and mature. I think the cage is a representation on her innocence.
Megan sings I agree w/ father daughter relationship...but I think it has to do with trust. A girl, these days, has to grow up quick sexually. There are many forms of pedofilia & inappropriateness. I think the girl in the video is 'damaged'. Shia is killing himself to gain her trust. When he does it is beautiful! Shia is the best actor of his generation!
Megan sings DEAD ON! This reminds me so much of my relationship with my 12 yr old daughter. Bieng best friends and now it is time for her to move on, and it is a struggle to handle as a father.
Kevin Cormier yeah, me and my dad had a relaionship before. he abused my mom. they got divorced and it hit me hard. recently he has gotten into a drinking and a smoking problem. my dad and i used to be close, but now im growing up.
***** Thanks for explaining that, I couldn't figure out the meaning behind the video.
Jonathan Deller according to the little girl she was told that they were werewolves and she was the dominant one who can get out of the cage and then realizes she was lonely. lol. I guess they didn't think she was ready for the truth of it
Listening to Elastic Heart feels like diving into the depths of human emotion. Sia's voice is the anchor that keeps us grounded
Maddie is one of those rare kids who can channel raw emotion at a young age, reminds me of Disney kids 💔
I dont understand how there are people who can misconstrue this work of art like that. Why is it that when you see a little girl and a grown man instantly this become inappropriate. Why do you not think of this in other ways? Why can't he be her father, brother, or someone just as lost and scared as the video portrayed? No, automatically it becomes something more, that shows how you all think. It was a dance, a battle, a story that is very clear. Open your minds up a little.
It is art and a truly great expression in dance. Both of these performers did fantastic, especially love the facial expressions from Shia. Well done.
***** ummm, okay????
that was deep
***** this comment is what is wrong with this world
I think so
Just to clear this up cause it drives me crazy when people assume the worst: according to Sia herself, in this video, Maddie and Shia both represent different parts of Sia. Maddie is the younger, free version of herself that is naive, bright and hopeful while Shia plays the jaded half. The half that has had all his hopes and dreams shattered by heartbreak. The song is about the internal struggle, between wanting to give up on love after heartbreak and getting back up and being hopeful about it again. The way Shia looks at Maddie longingly at 2:00 and 2:19 represents that even in heartbreak, you still long for what was. The way shes aggressive, then tries to physically fix him and then shes kind as she tries to help him out of his cage so he/Sia can love again. Thus, the elastic heart title.
caraclaudel I don't think you understand three things
1) Nobody cares
2) It's called metaphor
3) There were no intentions to choreograph such thing.
How dirty of a mind could he (caraclaudel ) have :)) like wtf it s wrong with him he says "dressed to simulate nudity, and we have her spreading her legs, sniffing his dirty fingers, wrapping her legs around his neck." like wtf and that proves pedo?:)) that proves only his sick mind think of that and not even trying to see a message in the music For me it s in my op a fight to overcome theirs mental illnes or their problems of any kind and the most beautiful thing is that all people can interpretate and could relate in it s own way to the meaning Sad is that even the dirty minds like caraclaudel can do that...:)) in it s sick way of course Sorry for my english...
usss2444 it's because caraclaudel has practical experience
L)) It could be that :))
exactly,,, wonder if Sia is part of Pizzagate with half the other politicians, singers, actors and upmarket social networks
Borderline as an adult from childhood trauma with relationships with anyone especially with someone you love as an adult. This has/will make me cry for years because of how accurate. My interactions with humans.
Fellow borderline here and I completely agree 😢
Damn it Shia Labeouf is so underrated
Fascinating how flawed infallible flesh deems worthiness under a world size microscope.
Shia labeouf was raped and it kind of took a toll on him that’s all but I really miss him
Mrs.Nickadeemus OMG 😱 he was go look it up 😐
He is kinda weird though
Mrs.Nickadeemus okay 😐🙄
The best analogy of this vid that I heard was that the cage was a symbol for the adult world and that the dad was trying to keep his daughter there and stop her going wild. Then she goes back in to try and teach him how to be a kid and when he finally realises that he wants out, the cage has gotten too small so he is stuck in the adult world forever. The cage was a symbol of suppressing your wild side and creativity - sort of a metaphor for real life. When you are stuck in the cage for all your life it is really hard, almost impossible to get out. Just one way for looking at it. Shame on those people who say this is pedophilia, it is a beautiful dance with nothing sexual implied at all.
I also think he is scared of her wild personality and wants to control it because he thinks it is dangerous to be wild/childish.
That's not the meaning sia posted the meaning
+Ariella Traurig :D maybe there are nothing pedophilia, but how can u explain, that in
fact, this video reacts to sexual instincts,a lot of people says it.they see it,and their penis UP,they fap on it,and after they calling it "pedophilia"))))))
+Videos and other things Yes but everyone is open to their interperetation of it, and take what meaning they want.
+Ariella Traurig That's an interesting take on it.
I heard it was based on how She and her father were battling depression, but she was able to escape from it, not him. Hence the heavy emotion at the end.
9 years and I still believe this is Shias greatest performance so much raw emotion that cage the ending how she tried to save him from his demons and pull him out but he can't do it he can't leave his own prison.
I've read a couple of different interpretations of the dance itself, but all I can see is a father - daughter relationship. The fear, incompetence, respect, courage, endless clashing, reunion, finding a way to each other, sadness and unwillingness to let go.
Yes I took it as familial like father/daughter or brother/sister. I quite liked it & didn't find it sexual at all.
Gosh I hate it when people think the man is sexually abusing the girl character.
The girl is a younger, freer, happier version of the man/Sia (I don't know who it is representing). The man is heartbroke and hurt, caged up while the girl is trying to free the man from the cage (his fears, heartbreak, and sorrow), but the man won't let go because (I think) he fears he will get heartbroken/hurt again.
Thus, the song being called "Elastic Heart".
It's rather easy to see it as a father-daughter relationship, though.
It appears as a story about a little girl who is growing up and her father reluctantly realizing his little princess is becoming a woman.
Legion Ivory Yes, but Sia herself even said it in a video, and a social media. She said that she was sorry people thought it was a pedophile music video, and then said that she meant it to be a video about her heartbreak and younger version of herself (the version I explained). 🙃🙃🙃
Very well interpreted!
Borealis Wolfe what I saw was different (no pedo shit tho) I feel like the dance represents drug or alcohol addictions, Maddie (the girl represents the addictions) and Shia is the addict.
Your interpretation is just your interpretation. It's not "right"... and others aren't "wrong"...
In my opinion, I believe this video is about a person with schizophrenia. Shia and Maddie are the same person, but trapped inside the same head which is the cage. One gets weaker when the other escapes or gains strength. As Shia was climbing to the top, Maddie was becoming more fragile. Then as Shia got back down to her level she gained strength and bit him basically saying "I'm the one getting out of this cage (mind) not you". Soon they realize that they're the same in many different ways, especially because, well they are the same person. Finally accepting that they cannot change, they help each other out trying to escape, realizing that "I can't escape myself without ruining myself" as Maddie pulls and pulls on Shia toward the end. A person with schizophrenia has many mood swings, as shown in the video their mood went from angry to happy to crazy to silly to sad.
Please don't attack me, if my comment is disagreed upon, it's just my opinion.
This is brilliant
WOW didn't even think of that. Nice catch :D
I didn't notice that and maybe sia has that
That's not what schizophrenia is. You're thinking of a different mental disorder, maybe bipolar or dissociative identity.

I am here nine years April 28 2024 and everytime someone likes this it reminds me of this masterpiece (not begging)
A lot of people give hate to Shia, why he's so talented and that beard is legendary
+Haadi Hussain Er, perhaps because repeatedly exhibiting narcissism and colossal pretension while treating other human beings abusively or as if they are worthless may lead people to criticize a fellow, even if that fellow has really sweet facial hair. But I'm just guessing. Perhaps people just don't get how legendary his beard truly is.
+Haadi Hussain not legendary not even close ....

2:02 ... "and i want it, i want my life so bad... im doing everything i can..."
I've never in my 34 years had lyrics resonate so deeply inside me that it shook me to my core. Every time i watch and listen to this... i dont feel so alone...and thats just the lyrics... dont even get me started on the video... 💕
step by step:
Maddie is Sia, Shia is her father.
He is confused because of (maybe) her new self, so he stays away from her.
But he can´t let her alone, so he tried to get closer to her again.
She refused and (maybe because of the scream moment) even screamed at him to go away.
He is shocked, confused and maybe they even fought together, because he couldnt handle it.
But every time she was down and confused because of herself, he came and tried to get her up.
She refused it again and just wanted to be alone.
Maybe one time he even tried to get away from her or leave her complete alone (cage climbing scene)
But as soon as he saw her breaking down again, he went back to help her get up.
She was scared, but she tried to open herself. But he got to close and she wanted to be lonely again.
One day he got depressed because of her (the lonely cave scene)
She couldnt see him like that, so she tried to help him or better saying...she let him help her.
They had fun again and everything went better , for some time.
End opinion: She tried to get out of her cage (the depression) and tried to take him with her...but he
couldnt let it go and fell even deeper, alone without her.
But this is all just a opinion. I can feel the story behind it or better saying....I lived it.
Your opinion made me cry. I don't know if it's right, but watching the video again, it makes a lot of sense. It's so sad, but at the same time so beautiful. And that is how love is, right? Beautiful, but at times, extremaly sad. I will never be able of watching this without tears again.
Very well expressed
Insightful interpretation.

maddie is so skilled, it's sad thinking what she must have been through in all this as a kid but she sure did and amazing, even legendary job. i still almost 10 years later am absolutely in love with how they executed the choreo
Im probably wrong, but i think it is about a little girl and her father. the girl is born and the father does not know how to handle/help this girl grow up and raise her. he soon learns to play and have fun with her, they care for each other very much, until the daughter is ready to grow up, but is not ready for her father to leave, so when she leaves the cage (her childhood) she wants her father to come with her, but he cant as the girl must live life on her own and make her own choices,
I thought kinda the same thing

wow, never thought I'd it that way. :)
that's a good one i think it makes more sense of he represents adulthood and she represents childhood

Symbolism: stress, addiction, hate, love. Everything that the human feels and the stressful cage of society that we choose to close ourselves, and the constant battle that we fight in our minds (the space) . A work of art.
Un believable, but I'm a 75 yo female who loves hard rock/ heavy metal and has just found Sia in 2024and am so thankful. ❤️🙏 What a voice, what a talent! 🤟
This is actually about two parts of a heart. When one part is damaged and fears being open to love (hence not able to get out of the cage) and one part is small and innocent, and open to love (hence easily gets out of the cage). But if the whole heart cant be open to love then they can't love, hence the innocent and open part of the heart tries to get the damaged part of the heart out of the cage.
That was deep

R u crazy that chick and that 12 year old is demented geez crap I lost brain cells watching this. Also that statement u just said is friekin trash
Are you bored? Move on. Nothing better to do than get behind a screen and call my opinion trash? This generation makes me sick.
Am i the only one who sees this as a man/father who has strength. this man is fighting his girls mental insanity, and hes going to fight to make her okay. throughout the video he feels like hes losing every battle with her. near the end he gives up and decides to just love her as is, eventually she realizes this and starts to walk away. then loses again to save her. AND WHAM shes trying to save him. there will always be a prisoner to insanity.
and Shia LaBeouf never ceases to please
You're describing "Betty Blue", which Sia would have seen in her teenage years but complicate the mix even more as the Male dancer has "children" with the borderline child-women. This is represented by his extreme range of emotions... displayed throughout the dance routine.
Ashley Quinn Beautiful interpretation, That's what I saw in the video also how He wants to protect her and finally at the end lets go to let her face the world. Learning that he must trust her.
Thank you I was trying to figure It out. Shia and the little girl did a great job and Sia is incredible
Yes,you`re right. The dance surprized me.Maddie is young, but advanced in "lyrical ballet". I danced mostly Classical Ballet, from the age of ca.4,back when we got whipped with the stick,if we did not perform "perfectly",and had to train alone,in a big,big mirrored rom, with only little me,Mrs.Agnes Gjerding,(former Prima Ballerina)..,and our claviature player.. My sister, born when I was 16,learned the more "intimate, personal expressionalism`s" lyrical ballet, that is all about dancing out your emotions and feelings. She was lucky enough to "play her way into the world of dance",without being physically disciplined. "Lyrical" is an often strange dance, but Maddie and Shia did it just beautiful and perfect. Credos to Shia..,who NEVER ceases to amaze us.. Bless you.You must be a special man. Many, many men are "afraid" of a tiny smudge of feelings. May all of your dreams come true.. Hugs from Norway.

Anyone in June 2024???
Anyone else think this is sia's best song or is it just me?
Idk, I think I like chandelier better, but both are good.
This song is great but I think The Greatest is better
i love it too, more than others
She's yet to come out with one that I DON'T love, but yeah... this one is pretty awesome. "Chandelier" was my **gateway drug**, though. So that's my FAVORITE by default.
Try Sia's "My Love". Makes me cry every time.
the two characters shown are opposite spectrums of the same heart, the part that wants to be care free and the part that wants to care and be cared about - and the tug of war between the two - an elastic heart.
nope it's sia and her father. both had heart diseases but her father died while she survived...
Both are truth...I dont know how about diseases but it s about sia and her father relationship and it s Sia´s inside freak...
It represents her relation with her father, that she wants to save but he doesnt want^^
i can dance my name
But towards the end kinda gets kinda sad
Possibly one of the most complete performances of all time. Lyrics, singer, video & meaning it has everything! Top bananna!
This song inspires you to be strong in difficult situations.
I think it is the internal struggle of the man who lost a daughter, but could be generalized to grief.
0:00 to 1:17 Denial
He keeps running away from her, covers his eyes in the beginning, seems shocked and scared whenever they make eye contact. He seems scared of her
1:17 to 1:57 Anger
He starts to fight back against the idea of loss, the first time he pushes back against her in the video. He then climbs to the top, refusing to think about the loss, angry that it happened to him. He stays up there and the memory starts to die.
1:57 to 3:16 Bargaining
The man gets to the point where he doesn't want to lose the memory of his daughter and drops down, trying to approach the painful memories again. At first he is able to block out the loss because of the time that has passed, but it doesn't last long. He then looks determined in the video and they wrestle, which is symbolic of him coming to grips with the reality of the loss and realizing no bargaining can be done, what's done is done. Then she leaves the cage and taunts him, which is the memories not being real enough for him, and he has a burst of anger before feeling like giving up, which segues into depression.
3:16 to 4:25 Depression
He carries the grief around, and it feels like it controls every emotion he has (hitting head, changing faces). After time living with the depression, it leads him to the verge of suicide (leaving the cage) but he doesn't do it. He stays on the edge until acceptance kicks in.
4:25 to 5:07 Acceptance
You can see the sadness turn into acceptance, with sadness still being there but lessened. He stops reaching out of the cage and his arms go limp. He stays in the cage and life goes on.
What do you guys think of this theory? It doesn't feel forced to me even though it directly correlates to the 5 stages of grief which makes me thing the choreographers used that theory as the basis for the video.
+iiavalanchei Really interesting theory, seems like you put a lot of effort into it, best interpretation I've seen thus far.. kudos
+Mindy Hudson if the dancing didn't speak for itself I never would have realized it, its a really great video
+iiavalanchei You are half there. Not daughter. The little girl represents Sia. This was stated in the Chandelier interviews that the little girl was chosen to do interpretive dances as she takes on Sia's persona.
Krissy Hales Yeah it also would fit that way as Sia losing the old part of herself and doing this as a way of saying goodbye that's a pretty nice interpretation.
English Lit be like
Obviously, all of you guys who think this video has pedophilia is a bit of a general statement. One interpretation of this video is, the cage is a metaphor for the inner/mentality of both the daughter and the father. The constant tackling and pushing is the time of constant adversities they both faced together, which refers to the lyric ''wanted to fight this war without weapons.'' When the girl is able to enter freely in and out of the cage; it means she can quickly adapt in and out adversities or it refers back to the song lyric of ''Well, I've got thick skin and an elastic heart''. Furthermore, ''thick skin'' means that she has high tolerance when helping her father, in this case; which juxtaposes with her father being trapped in a cage ( fear, adversities, isolation) when she comes in and out of the cage with ease. Near the end, once again, she goes back in the cage and tries desperately to try save or give a helping hand to his father, but he cannot come out which represents how deep or his mental adversities are and the constant isolation he is in when he's in the cage by himself. Lastly, the clothes they wear seem so close to being naked, because being naked symbolises a human's inner self. To be human, is to be flawed. Therefore, Sia re-conceptualises the idea of 'life adversities/tolerence in a more subtle way.
Amen
Or maybe the father can tell if his daughter is ready to decide on her own decision for herself. Kinda maturity or something I dunno :P
Thanks i get it now. I really didn't understand it
preach it!!! THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL VIDEO!! I love his emotion in the end ~~~~
Amen
2:17 the Best part ❤ you did not brake me I’m still fighting for peace her voice is gorgeous
Sia has made many great songs!, this one by far is one of my favs! music stops at 4:20 but they still keep playing!.👍
This is about the relationship with her dad. This isn't sexual. Again, Maddie represents a younger her. And Shia represents her father.
***** - it's raw and emotional. to show their vulnerability. that's it
She's not twerking, they are not making out, nothing like that. If you watch ballet, or even swimming, this is what they wear.
***** if you don't know the Ballet and Modern Dance Industry! Shut the fuck up!!
There is a really good dance they do called Amber Alert online as well. It's heartbreaking but the dancing is like this in all of their interpretive dances. It's speaking through movement
*****
Luckily there are some people who understand art.
I thought this made sense if you think of Shia as a father and Maddie as his daughter.
They feel trapped in a cage together, trying to figure each other out. The father not knowing what to do. Them fighting and yelling, with occasional moments of peace. Until she is able to get loose from the cage, away from him. He feels trapped, she feels sympathy, and so they're finally able to connect when she comes back. But when she moves into adulthood, try though she might, she can't take him with her back out of the cage. She gets the independence she once craved but it's not the same anymore.
Idk, just my take.
that's actually a brilliant theory...
signed in to like this.
brilliant
wow. Brilliant explanation
Love your theory :)
Now watching it after reading this : it's an interview of Sia talking about her father :
“I do find him amusing. I think it’s the only way to function within the relationship. Growing up he had two very unique personalities. One was called Phil and one was called Stan… Phil was like the best dad ever… He was fun but he was eloquent and he was present and interesting and interested. When Stan came around stuff got scary.”

I can never see this without crying. So much depth.
Watching this video now that I’ve been a dad for a while really makes me see it in a new light. We play with our kids, make silly faces, get upset, get defensive, and chase them wherever we go. Inevitably, however, our chase comes to an end and they can’t bring us along anymore.
Dad of two daughters here...
Can you not remind me of this, please... ?
2015 : who's that girl with Shia LaBeouf
2016 : who's that man with Maddie Ziegler.
Hahahahaha 😂
exactly :')
i made people laugh I'm so happy 😂 lol
YESSS
15 years ago called. They said they want half the likes for using their old ass joke.
My interpretation of the video
They are the same person. She represents the child, infancy, playfullness, what was left behind. He represents who that person is today, beaten down, stressed and "fighting for peace".
This video begins with him facing her, his inner child.
They are at war with one another. The child beating him and laughing and taunting him. Being playful sometimes, but he takes everything as a painful blow, even if she didn't it him hard. He tries to come close, but she pushes him away and throws him around. Of course he can't fight back, just tries to get away from painful memories or things he has lost.
1:40 she is down and he tries to wake her, he's gentle and tries to make peace, he offers his hand and she pretends to give in and be gentle but then bites him and keeps playing him around. He's upset cause he trusted and almost got close to reconnecting, so he starts going stronger against her.
At 2:55 when she leaves the cage, his prison, he is mad she can leave but he can't (even if physically it's obvious he can, 3:03).She sees he CAN'T leave and changes her approach. She now wants to help him instead of aggraviate him. She lets herself fall on him and be held. He holds her and comes to terms with his inner child. They play around making funny faces, she pulls at his face and gently triesto guide him out of his prision, but he's not stong enough and surrenders. She tries and tries to bring him out, but she can't do it for him, he has to want to, but can't. She eventually loses strength as well.
You are so amazing to notice and think these things!!!
I aggree, I see it the same way. The way I see it, she isn't either of them, she's the cage. To cite Freud, one would be Id (your "inner child") and the other the Superego (your "inner parent"). And if you notice, only the child can "escape" the cage, which I think is her saying that you will always be stuck with your self-judgement, but if you don't calm it down, it can "scare away" your childish joy and guilt-free happiness.
I agreed.
I completely agree with this interpretation, very nicely put!
Beautiful Ine :)
Every beat and instrument is perfectly crafted to create an immersive listening experience
This is a masterpiece, so amazing 🖤
I agree with most of the comments about the meaning of this video, but here's my take: I see a man, fighting, but with the feeling of a game. She can break free from others judgement (the cage) but he can't: he's grown up, he can't play anymore, he's confined in the standards for a grown man. Bet he's truly happy only when she's around and they can play and move in their space. And that's why he climbs up to the top of the cage, to put his head in the hole and watch the world from the outside, like he used to when he was young. Just my way to see this video. Great acting and coreography.
interesting theory my friend :D and I agree its great acting and coreography
I think this comment needs more likes guys...so that everyone can see the real meaning of this video
but what would explain the fighting?
As I mentioned, the fighting starts as a serious fight but soon will turn into a game, a child's play, because Shia is rediscovering his inner child. That is, still my opinion!
I like this interpretation because I relate to it, and maybe that's all it comes down too. I'm not a man but I understand when society views you as an adult you can't do fun things anymore, you can't mess up or need help, and you can't really be yourself without cages of judgment and responsibility. It kills our souls, no matter what gender/race/class or age we are.
I just see such an imagine of a fighting father and daughter, she was able to escape this cycle but he couldnt. she tried to come back for him but he couldnt get rid of his habits and was trapped.
Stfu you got that informations on sally's comment.

LOVE YOU SIA
the cage is her heart, the guy is her bad side (negative feelings and thoughts, etc.), and the girl is her good side (good feelings and thoughts, etc.). The dancing around together and fighting might symbolize how negative and positive feelings are together 'in her heart' at the same time and constantly fight for dominance. In the end when the girl (or good side) got out of the cage but the guy (or bad side) couldn't it could symbolize that she lets out her 'good side' and cages in her 'bad side'. {By bad side and Good side i mean impulses to do good or bad things, etc.}
Finally, someone who understands this video! 😉
Yes
+Noeypiepie Claps.
that's deep fam
+Noeypiepie finally!!
This video is about is about a father-daughter relationship. The cage represents the dad's "world" which is why he can't escape from it but his daughter can. The daughter remains apart of his life temporarily until she realizes at one moment she can leave. She wants to leave for good but sees the pain and anguish on her father's face, she comes back inside the cage to show her dad she loves him and still cares for him, but she understands she can't live in his caged world. As she leaves again the father clings tightly and grasps her arms because he doesn't want her to leave his life that he doesn't know how to escape, though he has tried. The two are naked because nakedness illustrates vulnerability and openness in the most effective way. It in no way expresses pedophilia. In my eyes, a spectacular illustration of the struggle of letting go.
Brilliant interpretation. Absolutely nailed it. PLEASE make it top comment so all these immature dim wits think twice before commenting complete utter rubbish.
I think this the exact meaning of this song...
jordan richardson
FYI-
Sia, who co-directed the visuals with Daniel Askill, tweeted. "All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play."
Further explaining the video, she said LaBeouf and Ziegler represent "TWO WARRING 'Sia' SELF STATES"
"I apologize to those who feel triggered by #ElasticHeart," Sia later went on to tweet. "My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody."
After reading this comment I got really moved. This truly is art.
you tell'em Jordan!
Wow.. cannot believe this video has over a Billion views.. congrats Sia.. such a great song and video..
My neighbors love this song, they even threw a brick in my window to listen better.
lol thats crazy; but i love it also
to the people asking "why shia lebouf?": he's an actor. this video has more acting in it, for him, than it does dancing.
JUST DO IT
FishCakeIce people may talk shit about him but theres no denying hes an amazingly talented actor
MrBrownie2310 true!
Ikr, he's probs gonna be in YT REWIND 2015
MrBrownie2310 Especially in this. Can't stop watching it. It makes me hurt in places I didn't know I had.
It's interpretive dancing... "skin doesn't always equal sex, touching doesn't always equal lust and dancing does not always equal carnality." And with the way society is set up, we always assume the worst right away. Either way, beautiful song, amazing video. I'm absolutely in love with this.
Sad that you as a young female would justify it. This world is devolving.
Private, i'm older then joce and an abuse survivor and an avid SJW for abused, trafficked and exploted youth. yet i don't see my causes here. the nude clothes here are more about innocence, vunrablity, power and pain than sexuality, that's why they are kinda dirty too, smugged innocence and all that.
***** nothing is sexual until one makes it so.
this is just dancing. look carefully and shia is nowhere near any "off-limits" areas.
according to sia they are two warring sia self states.
Jenna Waldman Again with the subjective realities. Very scary. Very dangerous.
You need an extreme level to accuse?
Sad indeed. Maybe it is that it is too late and the desensitizing is too deep.
How ironic will it be when you come face to face with the reality that you have accepted and promoted.
When you realize just how unimportant your life will be seen as. How you will be dispensable. Just another animal one above an ape. That a woman is just a means to create another disposable animal.
They have eyes but cannot see.
It makes one laugh at the cries of "think for yourself" when you people do nothing of the sort.
You promote that sex, morality, abuse, should be entirely subjective. The world you people want will happen. You will then realize the folly of your ways. But it will be too late.
All this "thinking" but you cannot see past the end of your nose.
You go right ahead and defend it. It will come back to harm you. I guarantee.
***** People like you make me wanna quit the Internet. But you can't quit the Internet, so I guess I'm stuck reading the thoughts of people who over-think things like you do.
Sia is one of the greatest singers of all time
This song and this video always make me cry. Maddie and Shia and this dance. The expressionism, like you can feel the pain in the dance and the acting just gets to me. It gets to me not only because it reminds me of being trapped in my depression and my addiction and the people who dont understand trying desperately to pull me out not knowing I would walk out of that cage myself if i could. That I would never choose to be trapped the way that I am and the hurt I feel fighting it every single day. It also gets to me because of knowing thebpain and pressure Maddie Ziegler experienced growing up under the spotlight in ALDC. Even though she made her way and it gave her a lot of opportunities, I cant imagine what it must have felt like for her at times. It had to have been a heavy burden for such a young girl. So happy she's making her own way and doing what she wants to do with her life.
People think that this is pornography or pedophilia may not realize that this is just an amazing form of art we don't really see anymore. It's a cool video.
Martina Crews If you think its okay for a man practically wearing underwear to dance with a little girl in a cage wearing nude suits then you need help
Vanessa Bluebear It seemed pretty obvious to me that this was a father and daughter - dealing with the inner wildness of your child and the crushing realization that each day your child is become just that much more distant as they get older. And that at some point you won't be able to fully protect them from the hard knocks in the world. Nothing romantic at all jumped out at me.
Alexandra Brewer I thought of a father with his daughter to, although I can see where the people with the whole pedo thing are coming form, I don't think that was the point at all. Besides, it's pretty self titled with elastic heart. In this, the girls heart changes again and again.
Alexandra Brewer Yeah, now that you've mentioned the daughter/father thing. It clearly makes more sense. People are like that these days if not that it's been happening for ages. Maybe that's what Sia was going for. Of course I don't know for sure, but it looks like it. I didn't get the romantic thing either. It just didn't make sense with this video when looking that way for me.
Vanessa Bluebear you are very narrow minded :)
I actually really love Shia.

Sharon Smith
I used to think of him like I imagine many others do, as that kid from that cheesy little show, but hes actually a great actor now... and a MAN. Hes pretty buff! :)

they have this thing between the layers, she wears something to cover her main hair and then the thing is attached to the wigs under bits.

I've seen this video several times (I love the song), and today I watched this video with my son (he's 6), and he said, "Mom, why can't she get the dad out?" My 6yr old saw this video for what it was, and a bunch of grown adults try to turn it into something sexual. I'm not sure if that's sad, or disturbing, or a little bit of both. I think it's a beautiful song and the video was well done.
best coment here.

It's not sexual though lol
