    Okay, so the way I see it is that Cafe Racers, Scramblers, and Trackers all start with a 'normal' bike.
    A Scrambler gets lifted/bigger/upgraded/offroad suspension and dirt or mostly dirt tires along with high pipes.
    A Tracker gets either street or mostly street tires and slightly lower, stiffer, etc. suspension. All in comparison/progression from a Scrambler.
    Cafe Racers get upgraded street suspension, clip-ons, better tires, more power, etc.
    Choppers are raked out cruisers. Usually full custom and made for looks rather than performance. At the very least, this is true in the sense of handling due to having raked out front ends.
    A Bobber is basically a cruiser that's lightened up, powered as much as reasonable, and in some cases made to handle okay. Built for dragging.
    A Rat bike is usually a Bobber that looks like shit. Or it's a 'rat rod' but in motorcycle form instead of car form.
    A Brat bike is someone who's taken their cruiser to the halfway point between stock and bobber form, and may or may not give a shit as to how bad it looks and may or may not have cobbled it together like a 'rat rod' bike.
    And finally, a Roadster is like Harley Davidson's new "Roadster". It's my favorite cruiser/bobber/chopper design.
    Also, just a note on what would end up happening in my case.... If I ever went for 'clip-ons' or a type of build that focused on clip-ons, it would most likely turn into a Roadster.
    I feel that if you're going for something like a Cafe Racer, then you might as well either change to a Tracker/Scrambler for practicality, usability, and fun, or just go straight up with a modern supersport.
    Or, like what would happen to me, make a 'Roadster' since clip-ons [at least high ones] make sense and look good on that.
    But aside from that, I think I'd go with a Tracker build that has high pipes for safety and looks. Good street performance, high ground clearance for curb hopping, stairs, urban jumps, good speed and power [better than supermoto/dual sport] and a higher agility than a sport, supersport, cafe racer, etc.
    All this while maintaining comfort with the seating position and just better overall practicality than the other designs. Second choice would be a Scrambler, though that might become the first choice if I lived rural or small town. Third choice just for comfort, style, and relative mellow attitude comparatively would be a Roadster.

    Some history you missed on the Scrambler style - the reason for the nobby tires and high pipes was because these were basically the original motocross bike. A "scramble" was an off-road race, similar to a rally stage, held over varying terrain. Bikes would cross streams, climb rocks, weave through woods etc, often on narrow footpaths. You needed a rugged bike for that, but it was also a race - hence the light, faster design cues.

      And Griphonne - I'm not an expert, but I guess you could say that in a way, the wartime bikes have always been a sort of scrambler. Not because they were modified with the aim of winning races, but more because they had to overcome the same operational parameters, like fording streams and climbing over rocky ground.

      Scrambling was the original name of the sport. It developed as race based on trials riding. My understanding is that it spread to the rest of the world and became known as Motocross in countries outside of the UK, and then the name eventually replaced scrambling as the name of the sport here too. When I used to go to scrambling meets as a youngster, I had never heard of motocross. Not having been around bikes for some time, I've been really confused about what I would regard as trail bikes, being described as scramblers.

    The funny thing about the bobber is it was originally just removing all non essential parts, shortening or eliminating fenders for racing in the 1920s to 1930s. Basically a tracker.

      RJ Maksym That's what happens when the shooting video camera's frame rate and rpm of the car tyres are almost similar in range. If this is a 25-30 fps video, the car should've been in 1500 rpm-1800 rpm, which when converted to rps is 25-30 fps. Cheers!

    Rat Bikes originally came about because of the illegal street racing scene and had two purposes: (1) To hustle some loudmouth into racing against it (sometimes for money) and (2) to add humiliation to whoever was beaten. The original rat bikes always had the negelected, unwashed and bodged appearance but all the money would be spent on the highly tuned motor, making the rat bike a true wolf in sheep's clothing. Let's just say that nothing beats seeing the look on a challenger's face when a rat bike's motor is fired up and they know they're already beaten on hearing the sound of an expensive race tuned (sometimes shop tuned) motor. (Yes I used to street race rat bikes back in the 1980's). Rat bikes can also be mongrels with non-standard or maker engines such as a Yamaha SR / XT 500 / 550 / 600 motor in a CZ 250 roadster frame, TZ 250 / 350 motor in an old Yamaha RD 250, etc. etc. as the concept is to hide the fact that a rat bike goes a heck of a lot faster than it looks..... and to win money in street races. rat bikes are all about spending the money on the essentials like engine, brakes and suspension and not wasting money on fancy paint jobs, fancy parts, etc.

    Man this was bold thanks for doing this video. The one thing about all these styles I enjoy is form fallows fiction. Example
    Cafe racer/BRAT=road racing
    Tracker= flat track/board racing
    Scrambler= dualsport/Enduro All can be rat or plush.
    All pay homage to particular movements that have earned a place, in history. So I personally prefer to categorize them by their use, in respect to each discipline. But hey when you build it you're entitled to call it what you want. Please keep building these things and share. 👍

    To me the biggest difference between them is the handlebar.
    I know there are other subtle differences, but personally I feel that the handlebar is what set them apart from one another.
    And also the wheels :)

    Cafe racer - bike used to race from one transport cafe to the next. Like the old Ace cafe, hence the name. They did what they could to go fast, the sports bikes of their time.

      It is the same as in Europe this year the weather actually, sometimes hot and sunny, sometimes showers. When I talk with my father and when he says there is rain, I know here would be rain soon, or sometimes it is in reverse.

    $4000 budget.
    Had a cafe racer want something more upright.. Leanings towards an enduro/scrambler /tracker style.. Dont want a project bike again , anyone have suggestions?
    I like a stripped down old school look.. Nothing chunky.. Also like carrying a passenger every now and then
    400cc or bigger any ideas? Nothing too high on seat heights

      check out my sr500 bike on this channel, that bike is pure gold. For that budget, you could get the newer fuel injection sr400, and customize it in the same way. Kedo.de has som pretty neat conversion kits

    I've been recently looking at converting a bike to either a cafe racer or a scrambler. I like the scrambler look a little more, so I will probably end up doing that but they are both awesome. Subbed!!!

      Awesome! Make sure to let me know how it turned out when you're done :-) a tracker is also a good in-between solution. In many cases, the only thing that separates a tracker from a scrambler is the high pipe on a scrambler. I love both looks, but it really depends a lot on the donor-bike and what it lends itself to best :-)

    What can I say? I guess you're about 80% correct, but a little bit of extra info is missing. I know nothing about the Brat style, I never even heard it before today.
    A Cafe racer was originally a person, just a guy, usually, with a bike, who hung out at a cafe ( more likely a pub ) with his mates and they would race to a roundabout or junction and back again, or even to another pub, no, wait, I mean cafe. The bikes didn't matter in the earliest days, you would just use what you had. But everyone wants to win, so bikes were stripped of unnecessary parts to save weight, drop bars or clip-ons were fitted along with smaller seats and exhausts and the gearing and suspension altered. Rearset footrests and other race parts were fitted, if you could afford them. The bikes weren't specifically intended to look like race machines, but obviously you would copy a faster type of bike, hoping to go faster yourself. So eventually the bikes were called cafe racers and now we just say it's a Cafe Racer because it looks that way.

    A Scrambler, would also have been a person and/or their bike. Motorcycle Scrambles was simply an early name for Moto Cross (MotoX) th-cam.com/video/2Y77rShF79Q/w-d-xo.html and one of the gentlemen in that video is probably Adrian Moss ( I don't know his face from that time) who, along with The Rickman Brothers, who's van you can see at 1:49 organized the first Vintage motorcycle scrambles series in '82 for bikes made before 1965. The Rickman Bros were well known competition bike builders and eventually made frames for road and rack bikes
    So you could have a Rickman Vitesse Mk3 scrambler and a Rickman cafe racer in your garage if you wanted.
    And I suppose you still can if you have enough money! ;¬)
    I had a Rickman Top Fairing on my Yamaha RD350LC back around 1981.

    i know you said at the beginning of the video where you are ( you named the beach at least) but what country is it in ? just curious. streets look awesome.. and thanks for the video. i found it because i bought a second bike for a project 1980 cb750k, just doing my research now to figure what i wanna do with it .. interesting part is gonna be when i am done with it and choice will stand in front of me (as i will have to sell one) between my 1993 Suzuki bandit gsf400 (pretty clean and mostly stock) and the cb. What would you personally choose ? thanks.

      Well, it really depends on the condition of the cb. bith biles are pretty solid. the bandit is a pretty badass bike too (although the v-frame makes it difficult to retro-customize). it's a newer bike too, which might make it more reliable than the cb. That said, if the cb is in good condition (not burning oil etc.), those things are rock-solid. the cool thing about the cb is that it's the perfect canvas for a REALLY awesome build, and if you do it right, you may just end up with a masterpiece :-) but if the cb has mechanical problems, you may end up in a world of hurt. as smooth as those old inline 4 engines are, just as much of a headache it could be if it doesn't run right. If you chose pods instead of the original air filter, you might be in for a world of 'fun' too, depending on the carbs it has :-p

    Great vid man! I can finally see the differences between these bikes. Hey, I kind off realized now that a like Trackers and Brats the most but I can't find a bike that I can relate to the images in your vid so... What would be a nice cheap option to start? BTW It would be great if you'd make a tutorial to start your own bike project.

      ¿Así que, si te entiendo bien, quieres construir una moto tracker pero con asiento en estilo brat, pero no has encontrado la moto perfecta para el proyecto? Pues te recomiendo una moto sencilla y preferiblemente japonesa (porque las partes son mas baratas).
      Una moto perfecta sería la Yamaha XS650 o la Yamaha SR500 (ó mejor si te alcanza la SR400). Son motos super simples, y te costaría un esfuerzo mínimo adaptar el asiento etc.. Las hondas CB, las kawasakis y suzuki GS, las recomiendo más para café racers.
      Lo importante es que el cuadro (chasiss) tenga la forma correcta, ósea plana.
      Si no lo has visto, te recomiendo ver mi otro video "how to build/design a cafe racer", que aunque explica el diseño de los café racers, hay mucho que también se aplica los trackers.
      Se me hace buenísima idea hacer un video tutorial en donde lo explico :-) gracias por la sugestión!

    I absolutely love your videos! I was wondering if you had any tips for buying the first MC on a budget? I'm currently getting my MC license and would like to purchase a MC (preferably street tracker / cafe racer / scrambler) both for shorter rides and for visiting family in Nordjylland - But is it possible to find a bike that serves both these purposes?

      ***** Thaks :-) Glad you enjoy the vids.
      If you're on a budget, but are looking for a certain degree of reliability, I would suggest going for simplicity. The more simple a construction, the less you will have to fix when it stops working.
      I would therefore strongly suggest a Yamaha SR500. There is no synchronizing involved, since it only has one carb, and the valves are extremely easy to get to. SR's are also incredibly adaptable, and make awesome street trackers.
      Ofcourse, the compromise is speed (although they have a fair amount of torque), but then again, a tracker's role in life isn't speed, it's manoeuvrability.
      And they are actually not too bad on longer trips either.
      A compromise would be an XS650. it has two cylinders, instead of one, but has the same basic construction as the SR. They're just a bit difficult to get your hands on.
      On the other end of the spectrum is a Honda CB. CB's have a bit more complicated a construction (for older bikes), but are quite reliable, and parts are cheap. CB's usually make better Cafe Racers because thet typically have a bit more power and flexibility in engine tuning etc...
      If it's your first bike, and you are not that mechanically inclined, I would not recommend a project like that though, since you will be guaranteed to run into complicated mechanical problems at one point or another, especially if you change the air filters or exhaust system.
      For a customising budget, I would recommend starting at around 2000usd (10.000kr).

      I've actually been looking into all of the mentioned bikes earlier but I'm somewhat doubting my mechanical capabilities.
      Right now I'm looking at a Honda CB500 from 1997 - It's a newer bike which probably suits me best due to the fact that it's my first bike and (as you mentioned) I'm no that mechanically inclined. It'll never be a cafe racer, but it'll probably be a fine first bike (at around 20-25.000 kr.).

      The CB500 '97 is undoubtably an awesome bike. The only thing with a cb500 is it's V-frame, that doesn't lend itself to the 'classic' look of a café racer or tracker. But anything is possible, and I've seen some amazing cb500 builds out there. But it's a fine line between a street fighter and a café build.
      Check out my video on 'how to build (design) a café racer', where I kind of explain that aspect of the design.
      But when that's all said and done, we can ask ourselves if the guys who built the original café racers back in the 60's would have used a bike like the more modern cb500 had it been available back then? And the answer is without a doubt; YES!, they would have! 'Coz it's a great bike :-)

      Hah, I've actually watched that video just the other day - so I'm aware of the V-frame and the fact that the CB500 never will become a classic cafe racer, but I think it'll still be a pretty rad bike with adjusted clip ons and some modifications to the seat and back :)

      nothing really :-p just a really cool custom bike! probably closest to a café racer, but the frame is too modern and the clip ons are a bit high. but the 'vibe' and its butt are quite café-ish. but like I mention, its very much an art, and sometimes they don't need to be categorized :-) the categories are more like a guideline.

      +SUBMOTO lets say both since i have to do some wiring on it. Its my 1st bike and all ive read about it is that the xs750 is too big to start on.

      +Uriel Elguera well there's a huge difference between a modern 750cc and an older 750cc. An xs will be much mor forgiving than a sportsbike for example, and only has 65...ish hp. But it is still quite powerful. It's also quite a heavy bike, so that is also a big factor. It's not impossible to start on it, but it might be a challenge at times, especially if you lose your balance. A lighter bike will be easier to 'save' in such a situation. But t won't flip like a sport bike would if you start up wrong.
      So not impossible, but I would recommend a lighter bike :-)
      On the mechanical side of things, you will learn the hard way, whether you like it or not. And when something goes wrong, it will most likely be something that you won't be able to pay a mechanic for. There is ALWAYS something wrong with these older bikes, but that is also what we love about them. For that reason it might be better to get something a bit newer, otherwise you risk not riding very much because of mechanical crap

    In the USA, "Hooligan" which is basically a stripped down version of the street legal Road-Racing "Super-bike" of the late 70's through the 80's.
    To the best of my knowledge Buell with their 1996 S1 was the fist "Bad-Boy" "Hooligan".

    Cool vid. After full dressers/baggers the Tracker and the Scrambler's are my next favorites for street bikes. Never been a bobber, rat, or brat bike fan myself. But unto each their own! If someone else has a love affair for a rat bike, more power to them! :-D It is what makes us riders so diverse and unique! Yet, we all face the SAME dangers, no matter is you are on a 250cc scooter or a 1700cc bagger! We are all as one in the end. :-)

    One name I hear down here in the southwest US is "doll trap" for bikes that have been stripped down and the frame powder coated or painted a ridiculous neon color before reassembly. I think they look really cool but no one seems to know the origin of the name. Anyone with insight on this?

    bobbers are stock bikes for racing stripped down to nothing but the essentials because of the small cc size for speed.
    Choppers are bikes that the frame was actually cut and re welded and have more than one kind of bike in it, and are a middle ground of performance and style.

    +Submoto I have been curious to get an Australia Postie bike and turn it into a Rat bike.
    Oh for those that don't know them, they are contract ordered through Honda, usally called a CT110, engine size 105cc, with automatic clutch.
    Paint it off-black such as charcoal or darkest grey and it could be a good start... maybe. Getting it through road regulations could be a pain though.

    Glad to see someone clear this up for the masses. I see Cafe Racer when it's clearly a tracker. Cafe Racer has clubman bars or clip on bars and a bum stop seat. Tracker has a longer 60's-70's style seat with upright motocross style bars styled after old flat track bikes. A brat style the frame must be shortened typically a bobber but now days many are really trackers with shorter frames and seats. A rat bike is is unrestored beater bike rusty greasy leaks oil generally a pile of crap no one wants to be seen on.Scramblers have those pipes that go up one side I call thigh burners but basically a dirt bike that if you change the tires and pipes it becomes a street bike again. I hate those thigh burner pipes I was so glad to see them go out in the early 70's but some tit head had to bring them back. lol

      Oh I forgot the street fighters which I have my own theory how they came to be they're R6 R1 GSXR CBR'S that were wrecked but still rideable but the plastics were trashed and the rider couldn't afford new plastics so they removed all the plastics and someone called it a street fighter no one cared if they dropped it again while stunt riding. Now we have naked bikes with minimal plastics that double as production street fighters.

    I figured "Scramblers" were simply people who used mid pipes like the ones on the co series Honda Scramblers. ...like my 68 cl175.. and triumphs scrambler..

      A scrambler is typically a road bike that is converted to be able to handle rougher terrain. To do this, it usually has a tracker handle bar (often with a reinforces cross bar), rougher tires and a raised pipe, so as to avoid getting water in the exhaust system.

      +thewolf well wikipedia describes supermotard as "motorcycle racing on a circuit that alternates between three types of track: flat track, motocross and road racing", where as a scrambler has is its roots way back in the 20's where people used them for point-to-point races in terrain. This eventually evolved into closed circuit racing, and ultimately is now what we call 'motocross'. So if one were to make an analogy, I would much rather be inclined to call the scrambler for the granddaddy of supermotard :-) ...but that's just me :-p

    Bobbers came after world war 2 in the states. Essentially the men of the armoured reconnaissance batallions rode motorcycles with the 30 Cal machine gun equipped side car. They came home and missed their full dresser Harley's and indian motorcycles. And those bikes were all hardtails. So they kept the hard tails. Shortened the wheelbase lowered the top tube, took off the front fender and chopped the rear fender to modernize and have a more agile and quick motorcycle.

    Small light and angry. I think i'll start with a KN filter and expansion exhaust, then i'll remove the battery and airfilter. Then single seat and either tracker bar or clip on's. I know that it will ride like a bag of potatoes because it is a MZ. But it is more show than go, And old people either love or hate the sound of a two stroke. I'll just need to figure out how i can wire it without the battery.

    rat bikes are the bikes that are looking like well used(overly) and tho maintained only very little or to the minimum to still be a drivable viecle! a bit like mine!!
    bobbers are just a strpped down bike aranged so it fits the owner ,started in the states after ww1 when they didnt have cross or track bikes as 2. bike ,but used their normal wartime everyday bike to score money on it with races!

      transdetendal Awesome, I didn't know that about bobbers :-) Yeah, I think she's doing better now.
      She had a severe fuel mixture issue. The plugs were burning unevenly ( and still are a bit actually). IT was so bad, that the plugs would foul completely after just 50km's, so I had to change the plugs. I just recently went back to the old butt-ugly stock air filter, got new coils, new CDI, everything in the carbs is now replaced with new parts and the diaphragms have also been changed. So pretty much EVERYTHING has been replaced. She still burns too lean on the highway, and too rich in town, but it feels ok to ride. My cylinder 3, still fouls too rich though.
      The compression test showed it was ok, and I also just adjusted the valves.
      I only need to synchronize the carbs now, so I need to get ahold of a vacuum-meter. I think that may even do something for my cylinder nr. 3

      SUBMOTO yup unbalanced carbs are shitty to ride , try to zero what cylinder burns best and turn all screws on turn them equally amount out to get a rough estiment of if its better , there by you can find the problem.

      laver du stadi vidioer du har ikke lagt så meget op jeg gad gere hvis det kunne ske at du kunne købe ned brugt og gammel cafe racer eller scambler og lave den om til dit behov så den kunne se nice ud :)

    just band- wagon jumpers. that's all. wanna latch on to the "in thing". no originality, no difference between any of them, 'cept the paint. don't be original, just copy everyone else. that simple. bobbers are the worst. ooh, I saw this bike, and that's what's in, I'm gonna copy it

      I follow you. I think I even made a vid on that subject at one point. But sometimes there's nothing wrong with seeing a bike and liking the look so much that you want one just like it. My hat is off to originality, and the cool thing about originality is that it really brings out the diamonds in the rough. But art is always so difficult to define. Sometimes just 'different' isn't always good. It's a REALLY difficult balance to build something unique, yet within tradition. But that's what makes it an art-form in my opinion :-)
