End of the line of for TTC Warden Subway Station Bus Terminal as of 3am January 05, 2025, that will be torn down and be redeveloped
TTC Warden Subway Station Bus Terminal became the eastern terminal station as phase 2 into Scarbough for Line 2 (Danforth-Bloor Line) as the line was being built across Toronto when it was open to the public on May 10, 1968. The Line then was extended to Kennedy Station on November 11, 1980, reducing the need for the eastern terminal at the station.
The 9 bus bays were used to service Scarborough before Kennedy Station opened with the bus bay being 100 feet long with one section for offloading and the other for loading riders that had 2 sets of stairs to/from the concourse. The concourse above the bus bays had retail, waiting area and washrooms. Signs for the routes projected out from the wall with bus at platform on top that flash to let riders know when a bus at the bay. There are 8 steps to go down to get to the subway station concourse. The station was not accessible when built like all the other stations that were built at the same time and open for phase in 1966.
In 1994 a private member bill was introduced to deal with the lack of accessibility for the accessibility community with the Province of Ontario planning on interduce a Policy to deal with accessibility. In 2001, the Government of Ontario passed into law the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) then came law on June 13, 2005 with a drop dead date of 2025 for the province.
This requiring all TTC subway stations and everything in Ontario to be accessible by 2025. Due to lack of funds on TTC end, several of TTC stations will not meet the 2025 date with several opening late 2026.
Warden is one of them and it is expected to be fully accessible by late 2026 with an elevator in service later 2025 to the subway. A new accessible Bus Terminal will replace the existing one to the north of the current one as an island platform for 12 bus baya with a walkway above it to the subway and street.
This will free up land to the south of it for 2 Affordable Housing Towers that will follow when the new terminal is built in 2027 or about that will be owned by the city.
TTC closed the south parking lot in November 2023 to build a temporary bus terminal while the new one is being built. Riders will have a longer walking distance to get to/from the temporary bus terminal, the street and the north parking lot. They will have to deal with the weather until the new terminalis is built as there are a few small bus shelters on site today.
Since the temporary bus terminal is now outside the paid fare zones, riders will have to tap on/off at the new station entrances as well on the buses.
