    In this quick video, I'll show you how I fixed the timing on an old mechanical Janome sewing machine.
    The same principle applies to many other mechanical machines as well. You can save loads of cash with the turn of a couple of little screws

    Lol, I don’t think my husband likes you, but I love you!!! I watched your video on the serger clean up. Between you and my girlfriend, who overhauled a Toyota Land Cruiser, I decided I could get my hands dirty and fix a few sewing machines! I guess I haven’t fixed any but I have unstuck a few. It’s so satisfying! Thank you for your videos!! They are inspiring! 😁 I probably have twenty sewing machines!!

    Janome made these same machines for Sears here in the U.S. They are around 30 to 34 years old. They are wonderful machines. Mostly all metal on the inside, but aluminum and plastic on the outside so they are very portable. Also with the variety of stretch stitches and a 4-step buttonhole, this machine will do anything needed to make clothing - including knits- without the need for a serger.
    Thank you for the video. I've no problems with mine at the moment, but nice to know this is here. I've actually never needed a professional service in the 34 years I've been using it. Just clean, oil, grease and change the needle when needed.

    Your older janome is built with a lot easier access for repairs than the newer models! You have to disassemble the entire cover and part of the machine before you can reach the bottom. I think I'm liking the older machines a lot better.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you bookbeing. Newer machines are so much more complicated to get in to. I recently did a new janome with similar issues but find vintage machines much easier to get into, and the mechanics easier to work with🙂

Done what you just shown and works, can't believe it :))) all dozens of other videos made by trash talking "experts" saying the needle is bad, re-threading, needle length, type of thread, etc.. fancy words and everyone ended up saying to take it to a repair shop witch would have costed me more than I've actually paid for it.. Fantastic job!!! I have an old machine that needs electric wiring . My husband bought it for me and paid $100.00 for it. I took it to a service center for a broken spool holder and he said if i wanted to actually sew with the machine it had to be rewired. 😳 However now i know how to time one if i have to in the future. Thank you so much.

      I enjoy pulling machines apart, and have a couple of videos coming up soon, but I steer clear of the wiring as I'm afraid of electricity. I do get Chris (my partner) to electrically test them for me though😊

      @@ChristinesHomeAffairs Your right nothing to lose. I know I had a cheap $100 machine and the thread under the needle was a big mess and I couldn't get out of it and pulled it. Took to a place and he said the rod was bent and would be over $100 for the part plus labor. I said you can keep and throw away. It cost me $65 for that info.

    Thanks to you, I fixed my 2022 Janome and avoided the long process of sending it to the seller and so on.

      I looked up your model number and it's a bit younger than the 385s with the grey face. They are circa 1990. (30+ years old)
      About 4 years ago, my machine was sewing fine one evening and the next morning he'd only make straight stitches. So I opened up the column (for the first time) and discovered a beautiful stack of metal gears in need of some TLC. Spent about an hour carefully working fresh lithium grease (all I had on hand) in where needed. If your lithium has hardened you may need something else. Check out "Randy your sewing machine man Genius Purchase $25" here on YT. He has a 22 stitch model and he does tell you everything that needs lubricating. He shows what he uses to remove the lithium ( He doesn't demonstrate it all.) I currently use "Superlube" on mine.

    OMG! Thanks to you, I fixed it!!! I actually fixed it without having to take it to the shop! I’m so excited! Now, I feel confident enough to tackle a few of these other dozens of machines I have that don’t sew… (note to self, when telling friends and family that I really do need a sewing machine, be sure and specify working sewing machine!) as it turned out, it was a combination of things. A, I replaced the needle, rethreaded the top as well as bobbin After cleaning lint and debris out of the machine… next, I set the machine to zig zag and checked the machines timing, which, was off a tiny bit… my Singer Heavy Duty is sewing like a champ!
    Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are so awesome!

    You are the only one on TH-cam who has a MyStyle16 😊. I just bought one second hand and the bobbin is stuck on the bobbin winding spindle, because the bobbin holder isn't aligned with the bobbin. I can't get it out no matter how much I push the holder pin back into the spindle. If you have any tips I would appreciate it soooo much!

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs

    You make it look so easy! The problem with my machine, is that I had been sewing tshirts. Then, I sewed some tabs on denim to make a quick curtain. When I tried to sew on a tshirt again, it looked up and bird nested underneath! Please help! I don’t know what to do,

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jeri. I don't think changing the type of fabric would cause this, but the first thing I would check is the tension. Is the thread in the tension disc properly? Have you inadvertently left your presser foot lever up? Also check the last hook/hole just before you thread your needle. Then you can check your bobbin. Is it in the right way around? Depending on my machines, I've found these to be the most common causes. Failing that, rethread with different thread, insert a new needle (correct one for the job you're doing) and bobbin, and try again. Hope there's a solution in there for you 😀

    • @JeriAnDrews
      @JeriAnDrews 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChristinesHomeAffairs thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me! Everything is threaded fine, new needle, tension hasn't been changed, I just switched sewing jobs ... I thing I will use my vacuum hose to rid the machine of dust and such, am about to head to Wally world to get new needles and thread ......
      During the summer, I remake xxl and Xl tshirts into shorts jumpers, bathing suits covers, etc... I fold the t-shirt in half then cut a shallow J shape for the crotch... I also taper the shirt to fit my baby shape from under the arm to the hem. Opening the hem of the shirt allows for a bit of elastic, if the bloomers effect is desired.
      Dollar tree sells tshirts, so, it's a fun in the sun project I love doing for folks. I also turn leggings into backless shorts jumpers by making the top out of the cut off legs....that's what I was sewing when I stopped to sew tabs of the denim to make a curtain.

    Bad video first about you don’t tell us which way you’re turning the dial underneath the sewing machine you just say turn the dial you push it up or down second when you finally did the fixed version of the zigzag you can see it puckers on both of the long stitches so that is not adjusted correctly

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Penny. It would have puckered due to the fabric being too light weight though, or I may have had the tension to high at the time😀
