Stan Lee created basis for the character, and then other writers that worked with the character gave their own spin and own ideas. As for his words about Downey Jr, I'm not going to say that he is wrong, but if you have ever read a Silver Age Iron Man comic, it's very obvious how different that Tony Stark from Downey Jr. Stan Lee's Tony Stark was pretty much humorless and he had very downbeat personality.
Iron Man's personal problems are eerily similar to what Robert Downey Jr. went through early in his own life. Must be why he worked so well with the character.

I loved the fact that Live Action Marvel Cinematic Universe skipped over Tony's battle with Alcoholism. I know it's in the comics, but they took the Palladium seriously and enough so that he's self treats almost IMMEDIATELY after getting back home three months after installing it. I loved the fact that Live Action Marvel Cinematic Universe skipped over Tony's battle with Alcoholism. I know it's in the comics, but they took the Palladium seriously and enough so that he's self treats almost IMMEDIATELY after getting back home three months after installing it. I liked this since with the Arc Reactor in his chest, he couldn't die of Alcohol, or so I'm led to believe with this 'battle thing' and he never got Alcohol poisoning or needed a liver transplant... or SOMETHING.

Iron Man didn’t start as the leader of the Avengers. Leadership worked on a rotating roster amongst the members in the early issues (they were really playing up democracy).
He basically is since he funds them.
He let them meet up at his mansion (though they thought Tony Stark was his employer rather then him) but the team wasn’t really funded and that had nothing to do with the leadership decisions.
