“It’s all plot and character” THIS!!! Reanimator was so good because the cast understood their characters and the plot was solid and well paced. Phenomenal movie, and I love it so much.
Generational indeed, my Mom found the film on cable back when she was in college and she showed it to me, after years of giving me a vague description of the film, since it's one of her favorite horror films. She's passed the torch down to me though as now it's one of my favorite horror films and I love to show it to my friends because of the awesome affects and characters.
CGI has been taking a backseat the past few years as practical effects have thankfully been making a comeback, relegated to enhancing the latter. CIG just doesn't age nearly as well as practical effects do.
"The Frighteners" (along with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and La Cite Des Enfants Perdus) was one of the first movies to use CGI to serve the vision of the movie, rather than announce (as in, say, Tron) "Look what we can draw now!!" Peter Jackson's not much of a writer but he knows how things ought to look.

I loved the frighteners before he made lord of the rings. Great interview.
