Personally, i think these are worse than the hobbit movies, as at least they were good to watch, and you could come out having watched them relatively pleased with how much of the lore they included in them. These cards however, leave a sour taste in my mouth and i would prefer not to buy them considering they have been aware of the foil curling issues and bad QC of the last few sets and should really do better if they want us to keep purchasing $300 packs instead of paying rent or medical bills.
Please Note: I misspoke when describing the Scene Boxes as containing 6 cards, 1 of them "new." All 6 cards are new, but I felt only one per box had any notable value/function. The language should have been "There's only 1 new card of the 6 of any note" but got twisted to "There's only 1 new card of the 6" which obviously is incorrect. While this of course does not change the evaluation, prices, or final grade, I did want to acknowledge the error. I believe we accidentally used a practice draft of the audio at those 2 sections which is how we missed it in editing.
Sure we've had one booster box, but what about second booster box?
clever lil hobbities
😂
I think he means to say that we only have play booster boxes from now on.
Are we able to up vote this for best lore related comment?
Lmao nice
I miss the old big holiday boxes. Perfect for cube and even came with dividers and stickers!
Wait, you'd use the product to PLAY the card game? Wizards doesn't understand, please explain why you don't just want printed cardboard cluttering your house.
Same here! I used them for storing my bulk cards until I outgrew the few I had and couldn't get any more (without paying crazy secondary market price). Now they have my fancy Basics in them.
I just reinforced mine a bit and then they worked fine. Wasn't difficult.
Disappointment is an accurate description. I was so excited for these and opening those washed out foils was just sad. I wish there had been a non foil option on the set.
There are nonfoil versions of the scene cards, but you can only find them in Collector Boosters. I learned this *after* I got the Galadriel Scene Box, so that really annoyed me.
@@blaze556922can we not do the blaming fans for being excited about things they're fans of? I understand the frustrations, but it really doesn't do anything.
Edit: nevermind, I've seen some of your other comments and you're just kind of a dick, so I'm not saying please.
Same.
I feel strange also the card inside the set booster, looks so “fake”! and for some strange reason there were a lot of same cards!
Yea but the collector packs are too expensive tbh compared to the normal packs
wow that's a big box, there must be so many cards in there
Not going to lie, my obsession with LOTR brought my attention to these MTG cards and when I bought the first few packs, I found your channel. Now im gathering cards and organizing separate decks for me and my kids to play with. Your vibes kept me coming back to the channel so if not for these LOTR cards, i wouldnt even be here or learning to play MTG hahaha. I love all the videos Professor, thanks for all the hard work you do. You deserve every bit of success!
I’m on the same journey myself, came for the LOTR stayed for the MTG
Glad there’s others just like me !
Hey add me to that list I'm obsessed with LOTR always knew about magic and now because of the professor and lord of the rings I'm happily learning and g we thing into magic me and my little brother both have decks we built out of lotr cards
Prof you nailed that opening bit thanks for that.
I picked up one of the scene boxes and the 6 scene related cards were so warped and curled they were not only completely unusable as game pieces, but also had no chance of standing in the cardboard frame to display (if someone actually wanted to do that…)
Everything I buy a $35 box of cards from the stores around here and keep having to toss 15 foil lands for the same reason
This seems to be really common occurance. Every picture I've seen has had the foils horribly curled.
bro grow up and put a couple of dictionaries on top for a day or two. they are useable and you can problem solve im sure. it does suck that we HAVE to do this and the cards should be of a higher quality but dont act like you cant use em
Thanks for wasting your money so we don't have to. Your doin good kid
@@mr.joesterr5359no, this is unacceptable. It's unacceptable that they're selling product you cannot use without a process like this just because WotC wants to save a pretty penny on card manufacturers
I enjoy watching the Prof hitting product boxes and throwing them around 😂
The Hobbit movies analogy was the icing on this video cake
I over heard a conversation at my lgs where one of the clerks was to a customer and mention how that the majority of the scene boxes they had sold had been to people who had never played magic and just wanted them as a lotr collectible. I very much see this being a thing moving forward with universes beyond, where items are made more with collectors in mind who may never even play magic. As the business people would see it, its a way to sell a magic product to people who would never by magic. Long how this will effect the game I don’t really know, but needless to say, if there is short term profit to be had there WILL be short term profit made.
I think that's actually a reasonably sound idea to attract that type of crowd, but they should make the quality of the physical product not suck.
Yup, I never played magic before. Bought all the LOTR precons and a collector booster box. Also picked up all 4 scene boxes. I'm done with magic 🤣🤣
@@pablo7336 good for you fam. Live your best life.
@@TheAverageGuyTAG The outer box is fine so 95% of the costumers would never see the real quality of the product.
That’s quite anecdotal and probably not the case. Most people buying these play Magic.
After all this time, The Prof's comedic timing and charm is still ON POINT!
It's getting even better with the experience :-)
That is a silly amount of packaging on those scene packs. I can't express how disappointed I'd be if someone bought me a big ol' box of what I thought was a premium magic the gathering present only to find 6 cards and three packs inside.
Welcome to the Premium Collector (TM) MTG experience. Big packaging, big prices, and small products
First time? Lol
Those boxes are being sold for $34? My Walmart is selling them for $47.99, and I was laughing my head off thinking anyone would ever pay that much for them.
They don't sell they just get stolen
11:33 - "We did Lord of the Rings! It was the biggest event of the year!"
A Universes Beyond set being bigger than the end of the Phyrexians says quite a bit about the state of Magic right now.
I don't know about that. Lotd of the rings is a MASSIVE IP, so it had a pull from lord of the rings collectors and mtg players. Regardless of the state of mtg, lord of the rings was set up for success. Unless you mean how mtg is probably on a very good place because of how incredibly well lord of the rings sold, but I don't think that was your implication.
To be fair lotr is the biggest fantasy IP, it was expected that it would be the biggest set in magic history (so far)
Thank you for the review of these boxes, Prof. I kind of missed that they had released these, and was considering picking them up, but I'll probably just grab a couple of singles.
I saw these going for $50 at my Walmart, definitely buy singles!
Oh yeah… if you really really really like LOTR and had a recent brain injury that made you forget you already bought it.
Prof, I just have to say, in the best and nicest of ways, I blame you for getting me into Magic. You weren't the first TH-camr to attract me to Magic, shout out to Nikachu, but it was you who sucked me into the game and got me hooked.
On top of that, you provide us a way to easily play paper Magic with other fans which is just amazing!
Honestly, I don't think I would've ever decided to get into Magic if it wasn't for you.
I purchased the Aragorn at Helm’s Deep box at launch.
I didn't experience any kvalite problems with the cards, but!
The so called display rake broke apart almost as soon as i tried it out. Luckily for me I was planing on displaying the art cards in a picture frame anyway.
I have 20 year old pokemon foils that look 100x better than anything I've ever seen in MTG. Its not some secret technique, it would just cost them a tiny fraction more money so we get trash instead because people still buy it.
Pushing over the Ixalan stuff in the beginning was a great bit. Very funny!
"JUST WAIT A SECOND, IXALAN!" 😂💀
Thanks for the great review and the warning!
I got for the same reason that you got the Princess Bride lair. Lord of the Rings has always been a favorite of mine. Own the books and movies in various formats and love the scene cards. Missing a few for the main release, but love the play style of the Lord of the Rings.
My local LGS opened all of the scene boxes and just sold the 24 singles (+art cards) for a fraction of the box price
Howd they profit on that 🤣
When those happy customers come back, there's the profit
What legends, nice
@@peanutmans0 well basically they still can sell the set boosters from the box, they also said they needed the space for ixalan
@@winkelfilms keep supporting that shop 🤘🤘🤘
I don't buy new MTG but I enjoy these videos, because your fun to watch. Its fun to buy MTG now that its getting cheap again! Thanks for your videos, they are always relaxing.
Always love these honest reviews professor!
Glad you like them!
@@blaze556922 I crossed a couple of your comments before this one. I go trough some rough times in the past weeks and it is hard for me to stay positive. But one thing I learned overtime is that spreading my negativity on social media was just worsening my situation and mental health. I read more YT comments than I should, but I remember years ago seeing someone named Blaze commenting on YT videos and giving their positive views to counterargue with people that were bashing in the comments. I don't know if you are the same person. Wishing you great hollidays and happiness in these diffuclt times!
@@blaze556922 do your critical thinking skills always fail when you go to comment or is this the first time?…
I wish they would bring back the big holiday boxes they had back in the day. I have two Khans of Tharkir holiday boxes and they're such a good storage solution. Good size and shape, looks nice, perfectly acceptable build quality. I honestly just want wizards to make these boxes again. (One of my boxes I bought second hand because I needed more card storage space)
Hi professor im a yugioh player but I'm getting into magic the gathering I bought two decks one of my decks arrived I'm a huge fan. You and the shuffle up and play series got me into magic
Love your Humor haha. (and the editers Humor)
I was at Walmart yesterday…
These look INCREDIBLE in your hand
This was actually a Pringles Universes Beyond.
love that little blooper at the beginning
My LGS is selling these for $40. Bought one and thankfully pulled a foil Orcish Bowmasters from one of the packs to get my value back. Also where is Prof basing the pack value from? Set boosters run $8-9 wherever I see them.
Keeps ads are the best. The Prof. is so thoughtful when writing them
I'm never quite ready for feeling propositioned by the professor for just a second till I realize it's a keeps ad 😂
Your collector booster box giveaway stream is on my birthday!!! 🎉
Please, Make a video about ixalan pre cons. I love your videos. A hug from Brazil/Ireland
6:01 I love to how 4 of something is a play set to the professor
Whoot! Coming to Europe and only days to prepare? Would have considered a short holiday in Barcelona if I had known. Man 😞
These feel like an experiment to mix secret lair type products with collector bosters, maybe we'll see something similar for modern horizons 3
I got the Aragorn scene pack for $30 (was on sale). Almost all of the original cards made it into my new Aragorn deck. I was so happy to get it. I had no idea Legolas's Reflexes was that expensive!
There are also the poster art cards in the collector packs. I was fortunate enough to get that version of Aragorn the Uniter in the one collector pack I bought. I bought all of the scene boxes too but mostly because I love LOTR, and also my LGS gave a discount for buying all together.
Agreed on the bending and dull appearance of the foils though
My scene box sets were in near mint condition over all. I am thankful. Im a huge LOTR fan and this product being"Cheaper" really helped me out. I hope you all got as good of a condition of this product as I did.
Aren't all these cards original designs?
Aaaaaand now I need to watch that stream on the 22nd 🎉
I did not appreciate the curling with the foils however I do love the scenes and so I picked them up. I kind of wish I got the non foil singles instead
Comparing this to The Hobbit movies? A chance to dust off one of my old favorites:
The Hobbit: An Unnecessary Trilogy
I would love to see a secret lair with all of the nozghul. "For normal price!"...
Just posting for the sake of a PSA: Nonfoil versions of the Scene cards do exist, but you can only find them in Collector Boosters.
I'll be looking up those art cards for my art binder though
I got a ton of poor cuts and Pringles in my boxes. Worst of all, they missed an entire ink layer on my Galadriel set or something. I can barely make out the artwork and only if I shimmer it in direct light. Classic WotC, make a great product then ride those coattails into the ground.
For comparison with other tcg's Yugioh is puting out a 80 card reprint set, thats all foil. And making a lot of staples buget options
Yeah, but Konami made S:P Little Night a $100 secret overseas when it was a rare in Japan at about $10
thanks for covering this. gonna have to buy singles I can see in person I guess. 🤷♀
great video! Not enough TH-cam ads, tho
Hey prof, since you dress so neatly maybe do a special on where you buy your jackets, vests and ties. Do you also do a rip test on them? You dapper fellow, you!
I will say I pulled a One Ring out of the Jumpstarts, which more than made buying them as booster packs worth the money
The special edition boxes are cooler than the first release in my opinion because all or at least many of the great commander cards from the commander decks are available in foil in the special edition collector packs. I would have probably skipped the first collector boxes for this second release if i would have known, but that also depends on if you like the scroll frame, which i do.
I'm glad to see a possible glut in LotR product because it might finally drop enough for me to pick some up. I'm interested in the IP but didn't want to support the wildly stupid pricing of the first round. Next spring this kind of product might be a nice pickup.
i loved the scenes and the hildebrant brothers art so is an A+ for me :)
Would love to show up for your stream, my only question is where do you stream and what time will it be?
What are you talking about with "One new card design per scene box?"
All 6 in each box are new designs that did not appear in the original launch of the set. They might not be valuable, but they are definitely new.
@TolarianCommunityCollege At what time will you be running the giveaway on your WhatNot stream? I believe you said Wednesday, Nov. 22nd but did not say the time. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving. You are appreciated.
I have not opened the foil cards from the paper pack for gear of them curling but sounds like they did a better job with the box foil than the actual cards.
If you bought one: good advice, the box look better on shelf than… a frame.
I appreciate these videos a lot, I think youre a rock in this community and idk how my experience with magic would be without you
Im happy that i bought the Aragorn pack. I pulled 2 Nazgûls in one of the packs! Either way, im really happy with both the Galadriel and Aragorn scene boxes. Both will be really cool decks to build
I got the witch king sky scourge scene pack, and I also opened two nazgul in one booster pack! I have 4 total now and one of the two I opened from the same pack were foil. I hope you got a foil one too 😄
@@ericlemesany2614 I have 4 as well, but none are foil, unfortunately. But I'm very glad that you got a foil one!
I pulled 4 nazguls. 1 holo, and 3 normal. Sadly, I got the same art on 3 of them.
I acknowledge that I am absolutely a sucker. I ordered the scene boxes the moment they went on sale without looking at the cards (or what they do) at all. I just wanted to put them in my LOTR scene binder. I am 100% the target market for these. There's a part of me that feels really stupid buying cards that I have no intention of ever playing with... but here we are.
Me too, my friend. Me too 🥲
My bros and I split a collector box and it was nice, the foiling was great and I cracked three new One Ring cards from my 4 packs. I bought the scene boxes as a Xmas gifts for my bros and now debating if I just give them out rn lmao. Also when I ordered them I thought it was 6 boosters, not 3 :/
I payed $35 for a pack and opened a surge foil barrow downs bojuka bog. It's a very pretty card and a guy in the store said it was $120. A fine addition to a new deck
the greg and tim hildebrandt art in the collectors boosters is absolutely beautiful, but i believe all (or definitely some) isnt even original for this set but existing art from the 80s. paying a premium for a licensed product with art wotc didnt even commission is a bit 🙃
i would love to see art of this quality in standard sets tho. its frusterating to me all these premium supplemental (and expensive!) sets get all the incredible classic fantasy art.
*bill murray voice*
"Well, it's LOTR release day, again"
Had Orcish Bowmasters and the one ring in one scene box I can't complain :D
When the video dissing your product is better quality than the product itself.
So you can still buy the first LOT collector booster boxes, online at discounted prices. Have all of the serialized rings been found?
The electric boogaloo got me 😂
Weird that a “holiday release” happened in early November, which is like a month before even the smaller winter holidays
6:20 I'm not familiar to WhatNot but I tried creating an account with the invite link and it seems it's not worldwide there are only 7 countries on the list.
is the stream and the giveaway only for those countries too?
hey guys i am just now looking to buy some precon commander deck and since i am new to tihs i don know what should i buy as a first deck that is good to play and possibly upgrade later. i am looking currently at innistrad ( strefan or milisicen ) and lathril deck so any advice or even if Pof can see this and help anyhow thanks i advance
What are your thoughts on the rakshasa not being cats anymore? Why? I wanted a cat tribal for sultai!
I came for the jokes, I stayed for your excellent opinions on the Hobbit movies.
I personally really like the new lotr collectors box because I just got into the game and missed the original release. I really like the scroll borders and the new “poster cards”. Still won’t be buying it until the price drops a little because 300 is a little much.
Well, it's good to know that you aren't just a yes man. Respect. Thanks.
Bought 4 got a discount @my Gamestore and I am happy with the cards. :) even got a Bowmaster which was kinda lucky.
Also they make Lotr themed only Commander Decks more playable as they were not that good. :)
Ofc cheaper offer would have been nice but you can say that for any product these days.
Why is urborg 5 dollars?
Is swampwalk/first strike really worth the difference between a basic land and 5 dollars?
Newer player btw.
Oh, I've been waiting for this one 😏
Yes, it was very lack luster. However I did get a foil Orcish Bowmaster. 😏
These are $70+ at Walmart here in Ontario, Canada.
Love yah and your videos but cannot stand Whatnot due to the constant server and connection issues it has. Tried to join multiple times for giveaways and such and always have issues with it and never get to even sniff a chance at any of this. So alas I have given up trying Professor. Sorry
I put all of them in my cool stuff binder with the art cards behind them so then any of the cards that I do have decks the scene is still full.
Cool vid idea ill enjoy watching it
i kept my Aragorn scene i ordered, helps there is at least 1 expensive card and there are still multiple cards i was hoping to pull from the set boosters. It did not have as strong of quality issues that we've seen reported for Galadriel, but the pringling from the foil was still among the worst i had ever seen.
I feel like I’m missing something. Aren’t ALL the scene cards original designs?
They're all original artworks, but the ones Prof pointed out are brand new cards altogether
I'm pretty sure all six of each of the scene cards are brand new and mechanically unique.
Yes they are. They can also be found in the new collector booster packs that he mentioned at the beginning of the video.
If you are still confused, you might be mixing up the beginning of the video where he is talking about new alt art reprints in the collector boosters that are just reskins of old cards.
Correct: all 24 scene cards are new original mechanically unique designs. This is a mistake in the video.
Yeah, my mistake lol. I didn't really pay any attention to the LotR cards so I just knew like "there is a gandalf card" so I misunderstood as well haha
You a real one for this
All you need to know is go look at single prices of the first scene boxes in this set. You can get them all as singles from TCG for 5-10 dollars total.
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but you can also get the cards that exist in these packs from the collector booster packs.
Are you talking about the original scene boxes? If so, you would need to omit the box with the one ring. This set of boxes has exclusive releases (all the legendary creatures) that do not have alternate prints in standard set boosters, not to mention they are objectively better cards than Frodo, Faramir, Pippin, etc. While they are similar products, I don’t think you claim will last the test of time by any measure.
They are available in the collector boosters, but those packs are even more expensive lol so other than the fact there will just be more of these cards in circulation beyond the scan boxes, I don’t think that changes the price all that much either.
@@snowmanO07 yes the original scene boxes. Yes the one ring (orcish bowmaster, Aragon the Uniter, and last March of the ents as well) definitely have value. But you can get almost all the other scene cards for a quarter or less, some at a dollar or 2. What I was saying is you can get the original scene cards for less than the prices of these boxes. Just my opinion but you can select the one with the one ring and bowmaster then just get singles of the rest and save money.
Hey, i just grabbed one of the "Flight of the Witch King" boxes for $30, so equal value right? 🤣
These boxes are perfect for a LOTR nerd who also plays magic and has some theme decks. I guess that means me lol. Cant decide between aragorn or nazgul box, since I have a lord of the nazgul deck and aragorn unifier deck with all variations of aragorn.
I don't understand the one highlighted card of each scene set. Aren't all six original designs? What's the difference from that one to the other five?
