These cards however, leave a sour taste in my mouth and i would prefer not to buy them considering they have been aware of the foil curling issues and bad QC of the last few sets and should really do better if they want us to keep purchasing $300 packs instead of paying rent or medical bills.

I over heard a conversation at my lgs where one of the clerks was to a customer and mention how that the majority of the scene boxes they had sold had been to people who had never played magic and just wanted them as a lotr collectible. I very much see this being a thing moving forward with universes beyond, where items are made more with collectors in mind who may never even play magic. As the business people would see it, its a way to sell a magic product to people who would never by magic. Long how this will effect the game I don’t really know, but needless to say, if there is short term profit to be had there WILL be short term profit made.
That is a silly amount of packaging on those scene packs. I can't express how disappointed I'd be if someone bought me a big ol' box of what I thought was a premium magic the gathering present only to find 6 cards and three packs inside.
I purchased the Aragorn at Helm’s Deep box at launch. I didn't experience any kvalite problems with the cards, but! The so called display rake broke apart almost as soon as i tried it out. Luckily for me I was planing on displaying the art cards in a picture frame anyway.

I have 20 year old pokemon foils that look 100x better than anything I've ever seen in MTG. Its not some secret technique, it would just cost them a tiny fraction more money so we get trash instead because people still buy it.
What are you talking about with "One new card design per scene box?" All 6 in each box are new designs that did not appear in the original launch of the set. They might not be valuable, but they are definitely new.
My LGS is selling these for $40. Bought one and thankfully pulled a foil Orcish Bowmasters from one of the packs to get my value back. Also where is Prof basing the pack value from? Set boosters run $8-9 wherever I see them.
I wish they would bring back the big holiday boxes they had back in the day. I have two Khans of Tharkir holiday boxes and they're such a good storage solution. Good size and shape, looks nice, perfectly acceptable build quality. I honestly just want wizards to make these boxes again. I got a ton of poor cuts and Pringles in my boxes. Worst of all, they missed an entire ink layer on my Galadriel set or something. I can barely make out the artwork and only if I shimmer it in direct light. Classic WotC, make a great product then ride those coattails into the ground.
I got the Aragorn scene pack for $30 (was on sale). Almost all of the original cards made it into my new Aragorn deck. I was so happy to get it. I had no idea Legolas's Reflexes was that expensive!
Thank you for the review of these boxes, Prof. I kind of missed that they had released these, and was considering picking them up, but I'll probably just grab a couple of singles.
Yes they are. They can also be found in the new collector booster packs that he mentioned at the beginning of the video. If you are still confused, you might be mixing up the beginning of the video where he is talking about new alt art reprints in the collector boosters that are just reskins of old cards.
My scene box sets were in near mint condition over all. I am thankful. Im a huge LOTR fan and this product being"Cheaper" really helped me out. I hope you all got as good of a condition of this product as I did.
I bought the Gandalf scene and got lucky pulling an orcish bowmasters and a nazgul from the three packs, but I would not recommend getting it. If you don't pull an orcish bowmasters it isn't worth it. The packs should have been collector packs or there should have been 6-8 of them.
I don't buy new MTG but I enjoy these videos, because your fun to watch. Its fun to buy MTG now that its getting cheap again! Thanks for your videos, they are always relaxing.
Im happy that i bought the Aragorn pack. I pulled 2 Nazgûls in one of the packs! Either way, im really happy with both the Galadriel and Aragorn scene boxes. Both will be really cool decks to build
I got the witch king sky scourge scene pack, and I also opened two nazgul in one booster pack! I have 4 total now and one of the two I opened from the same pack were foil. I hope you got a foil one too 😄
Hi professor im a yugioh player but I'm getting into magic the gathering I bought two decks one of my decks arrived I'm a huge fan. You and the shuffle up and play series got me into magic
I did not appreciate the curling with the foils however I do love the scenes and so I picked them up. I kind of wish I got the non foil singles instead
I wish you would share the “buy” and “sell” price of these cards. I want a few of these singles, and was disappointed in the box’s value through your video. Then I realized buying the singles actually adds up quite a bite, I just can’t SELL the cards to get the value. These boxes definitely exceed their value, you just won’t make a profit off of ripping and selling them back. But what product would? I would almost always expect their inherent value to exceed the purchase price, but their sell value to be close to or less than the purchase price.
Picked a set of these up online for €25 a piece, including shipping. NOBODY wants these at rrp, it's amazing. €25 is great, but no way would I pay €35+ for them.
There are also the poster art cards in the collector packs. I was fortunate enough to get that version of Aragorn the Uniter in the one collector pack I bought. I bought all of the scene boxes too but mostly because I love LOTR, and also my LGS gave a discount for buying all together. Agreed on the bending and dull appearance of the foils though
the greg and tim hildebrandt art in the collectors boosters is absolutely beautiful, but i believe all (or definitely some) isnt even original for this set but existing art from the 80s. paying a premium for a licensed product with art wotc didnt even commission is a bit 🙃 i would love to see art of this quality in standard sets tho. its frusterating to me all these premium supplemental (and expensive!) sets get all the incredible classic fantasy art.
I payed $35 for a pack and opened a surge foil barrow downs bojuka bog. It's a very pretty card and a guy in the store said it was $120. A fine addition to a new deck
6:20 I'm not familiar to WhatNot but I tried creating an account with the invite link and it seems it's not worldwide there are only 7 countries on the list. is the stream and the giveaway only for those countries too?
Yeah, I'm having difficulty understanding why one card is green with a star in the list, all six cards in each set are new designs that weren't printed in LTR or LTC already?
All you need to know is go look at single prices of the first scene boxes in this set. You can get them all as singles from TCG for 5-10 dollars total. Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but you can also get the cards that exist in these packs from the collector booster packs.
Are you talking about the original scene boxes? If so, you would need to omit the box with the one ring. This set of boxes has exclusive releases (all the legendary creatures) that do not have alternate prints in standard set boosters, not to mention they are objectively better cards than Frodo, Faramir, Pippin, etc. While they are similar products, I don’t think you claim will last the test of time by any measure. They are available in the collector boosters, but those packs are even more expensive lol so other than the fact there will just be more of these cards in circulation beyond the scan boxes, I don’t think that changes the price all that much either.
@@snowmanO07 yes the original scene boxes. Yes the one ring (orcish bowmaster, Aragon the Uniter, and last March of the ents as well) definitely have value. But you can get almost all the other scene cards for a quarter or less, some at a dollar or 2. What I was saying is you can get the original scene cards for less than the prices of these boxes. Just my opinion but you can select the one with the one ring and bowmaster then just get singles of the rest and save money.
I'm so happy. I'm finally one of many Magic: The Gathering players that asked a question! I was wondering if we didn't just have Lord of the Rings. Seems like Wizards' business plan is over saturate the market with intellectual property and leave players' in a state of confusion where they just buy more pretty card stock.
I personally really like the new lotr collectors box because I just got into the game and missed the original release. I really like the scroll borders and the new “poster cards”. Still won’t be buying it until the price drops a little because 300 is a little much.
My bros and I split a collector box and it was nice, the foiling was great and I cracked three new One Ring cards from my 4 packs. I bought the scene boxes as a Xmas gifts for my bros and now debating if I just give them out rn lmao. Also when I ordered them I thought it was 6 boosters, not 3 :/
@TolarianCommunityCollege At what time will you be running the giveaway on your WhatNot stream? I believe you said Wednesday, Nov. 22nd but did not say the time. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving. You are appreciated.
Bought all 4 and wish I hadn't, all scene cards curled and I bought for play. Do not waste your money on such poor quality control from wizard. It's a shame.
the original LOTR MTG set was motivated by pure profit too, prof. what with the blacksploitation and such. please dont compare the original movies to that set.
I'm glad to see a possible glut in LotR product because it might finally drop enough for me to pick some up. I'm interested in the IP but didn't want to support the wildly stupid pricing of the first round. Next spring this kind of product might be a nice pickup.
The special edition boxes are cooler than the first release in my opinion because all or at least many of the great commander cards from the commander decks are available in foil in the special edition collector packs. I would have probably skipped the first collector boxes for this second release if i would have known, but that also depends on if you like the scroll frame, which i do.
Love yah and your videos but cannot stand Whatnot due to the constant server and connection issues it has. Tried to join multiple times for giveaways and such and always have issues with it and never get to even sniff a chance at any of this. So alas I have given up trying Professor. Sorry
I was looking forward to these even though I knew they wouldn't be financially worth it, but opening such terrible, low-quality cards was rather soul-crushing. I can only imagine how disappointing this is for others, especially for lotr fans who do not play magic, as these are completely useless to them. It's absolutely inexcusable that card quality in premium products like this is even worse than in regular magic products.
I got the Gandalf one, and when I opened it I had the same reaction. Why would I put the actual cards in here, I want to play with them. What is the use of the giant piece of cardboard that you... put identical pieces of cardboard in the other side? A nice, thick-ish print I would have kept, but I just donated the non-playable bits to my LGS.
Card kingdom sells a bundle of all 4 for $130. Set boosters go for $6.50, multiplied by 12 equals $78. Legolas alone is $25. Either the rest of the cards added up or the collectibility is definite worth more than $27. I get the argument that it was unnecessary, but I think the Prof is actually objectively off on this one.
I have not opened the foil cards from the paper pack for gear of them curling but sounds like they did a better job with the box foil than the actual cards.
i kept my Aragorn scene i ordered, helps there is at least 1 expensive card and there are still multiple cards i was hoping to pull from the set boosters. It did not have as strong of quality issues that we've seen reported for Galadriel, but the pringling from the foil was still among the worst i had ever seen.
Hey prof, since you dress so neatly maybe do a special on where you buy your jackets, vests and ties. Do you also do a rip test on them? You dapper fellow, you!
I skipped original LotR release because I knew I'd pick up packs from wave 2. Pulled a Bowmasters, so *I* broke ahead, but I don't imagine my experience will be universal.
Got the bundle of all four scene sets for ~$120; I like the scene and art cards. But the cards did curl badly (in a binder now to flatten out), and one of the the four sets was missing one of the six cards and had a double of another.

I'm never quite ready for feeling propositioned by the professor for just a second till I realize it's a keeps ad 😂
I’ve seen them go for over 40 bucks in big stores and set booster packs are more than 5
Set boosters are $6.50, not sure why he would be off on that. That’s $4.50 he omitted from the value per box, which makes a significant difference.
Agreed on the bending and dull appearance of the foils though
the greg and tim hildebrandt art in the collectors boosters is absolutely beautiful, but i believe all (or definitely some) isnt even original for this set but existing art from the 80s. paying a premium for a licensed product with art wotc didnt even commission is a bit 🙃
i would love to see art of this quality in standard sets tho. its frusterating to me all these premium supplemental (and expensive!) sets get all the incredible classic fantasy art.
My lgs tried to presale them for 80 euro and dropped the prices now to around 35 euro after nobody bought a single one of them. It´s hilarious.
Aren't all these cards original designs?
Why is urborg 5 dollars?
Is swampwalk/first strike really worth the difference between a basic land and 5 dollars?
Newer player btw.
These feel like an experiment to mix secret lair type products with collector bosters, maybe we'll see something similar for modern horizons 3
I payed $35 for a pack and opened a surge foil barrow downs bojuka bog. It's a very pretty card and a guy in the store said it was $120. A fine addition to a new deck
I would love to see a secret lair with all of the nozghul. "For normal price!"...
6:20 I'm not familiar to WhatNot but I tried creating an account with the invite link and it seems it's not worldwide there are only 7 countries on the list.
is the stream and the giveaway only for those countries too?
Am I missing something, or is he saying only one of the cards in each scene box is original design? Aren’t all six in each box original?
Yeah, I'm having difficulty understanding why one card is green with a star in the list, all six cards in each set are new designs that weren't printed in LTR or LTC already?
I came for the jokes, I stayed for your excellent opinions on the Hobbit movies.
These are $70+ at Walmart here in Ontario, Canada.
love that little blooper at the beginning
I'm so happy. I'm finally one of many Magic: The Gathering players that asked a question! I was wondering if we didn't just have Lord of the Rings. Seems like Wizards' business plan is over saturate the market with intellectual property and leave players' in a state of confusion where they just buy more pretty card stock.
I will say I pulled a One Ring out of the Jumpstarts, which more than made buying them as booster packs worth the money
Also when I ordered them I thought it was 6 boosters, not 3 :/
I love how he doesnt even know that all of them are new designs.
Whoot! Coming to Europe and only days to prepare? Would have considered a short holiday in Barcelona if I had known. Man 😞
the original LOTR MTG set was motivated by pure profit too, prof. what with the blacksploitation and such. please dont compare the original movies to that set.
I almost bought these scene boosters because I'm a fan of LOTR, thank goodness I saw the quality of the cards before doing that
Weird that a “holiday release” happened in early November, which is like a month before even the smaller winter holidays
"LOTR was the biggest product of the year, but we moved on." The most poignant takeaway from this whole video, in my opinion.
I'm glad to see a possible glut in LotR product because it might finally drop enough for me to pick some up. I'm interested in the IP but didn't want to support the wildly stupid pricing of the first round. Next spring this kind of product might be a nice pickup.
I appreciate these videos a lot, I think youre a rock in this community and idk how my experience with magic would be without you
When is the last time you were stoked to open a foil?
The special edition boxes are cooler than the first release in my opinion because all or at least many of the great commander cards from the commander decks are available in foil in the special edition collector packs. I would have probably skipped the first collector boxes for this second release if i would have known, but that also depends on if you like the scroll frame, which i do.
Love yah and your videos but cannot stand Whatnot due to the constant server and connection issues it has. Tried to join multiple times for giveaways and such and always have issues with it and never get to even sniff a chance at any of this. So alas I have given up trying Professor. Sorry
Thanks for the great review and the warning!
Last time I order something on prerelease. More than the cost, I was most frustrated with the terrible foiling and curling.
Hey prof, since you dress so neatly maybe do a special on where you buy your jackets, vests and ties. Do you also do a rip test on them? You dapper fellow, you!
the absolute choas within the first minute of this video is golden
Love your Humor haha. (and the editers Humor)
I skipped original LotR release because I knew I'd pick up packs from wave 2. Pulled a Bowmasters, so *I* broke ahead, but I don't imagine my experience will be universal.
Well, it's good to know that you aren't just a yes man. Respect. Thanks.
Got the bundle of all four scene sets for ~$120; I like the scene and art cards. But the cards did curl badly (in a binder now to flatten out), and one of the the four sets was missing one of the six cards and had a double of another.
I also got all 4 for $120 and don't feel as bad, luckily no duplicates and the pulls from the set boosters were neat
Yes, it was very lack luster. However I did get a foil Orcish Bowmaster. 😏
lmao the Hobbit movies getting roasted in a Magic video, there is no escape
