I remember you could absorb everything even after having absorbed the Sentinel, provided you didn't go to his square yet. I would build an enormous tower of boulders and then view from above before ultimately moving on. The Sentinel Returns didn't have these features anymore.
This was one of the most original games ever released on the C64. There was literally nothing like it. I remember the review in ZZap! - they absolutely gushed over it.
Excellent video! Just a few minor things: 1) As you know, we put boulders underneath our robots to be able to see ground squares higher up than we currently are - however, you often seem to build TWO boulders and then a robot on top of that. That’s pointless; two boulders don’t let you see any further than a single boulder. An odd number of boulders is ideal. 2) Also, the enemies don’t activate until you absorb or build something, so always use that to your advantage, just like you did on level 0000 here. 3) You’re absolutely right about us not being able to absorb stuff from the landscape once the Sentinel is absorbed, but we can still build stuff! So if we’re stuck on level 0400, but we have a code written down for level 0397, finish 0397 again with as much energy as possible, and once you’ve absorbed the Sentinel, build stuff until you have the exact amount of energy to get to level 0401, which would be 7 energy units (or 2 robots and a tree). When you hyperspace, regardless of whether on the Sentinel’s plinth or not, that costs you 3 energy units: the cost for a robot in the new location. Incidentally, as you know, you don’t have to enter an 8-digit code to access level 0000 - but level 0000 DOES have code. To see it, finish level 0000 with exactly 3 energy units remaining, that will take you back to level 0000, and you get the code for that level. File under ”Stupid Pet Tricks”. Thanks for a great video!
Good video! There are loads of terrible videos about this game on here, but yours is one of the best. Thank you and well done - you just earned a subscriber. :-)
Although the game play is not the same, this reminds me of an Amiga game called "Tower of Babel" which I found to be very fun and addictive. It had a much more puzzle oriented feel to it.
Hello, I’m new to this game and I really like it - it’s just so… peculiar! Anyhoo, I’m playing it on the Play Station but the same rules apply, so here’s my question: You can build boulders in order to get the Sentinel’s attention and also to move upwards, in the landscape. But why would I build trees? Trees don’t interest the Sentinel, as their value is only 1 point and they only go after things worth 2 or more points - so why build trees? Please clarify. Thank you kindly
Also, trees cost 1 energy unit, so if you’re hunting for a very specific level code (altho I don’t think they’re in Sentinel Returns), there will be situations where you’ll need to be able to subtract a single energy unit in order to get to the desired level.
Only ever had one problem with this game.. the slow scrolling. This new fan made pc version fixes that: th-cam.com/video/4Ckk6qG6IV8/w-d-xo.html Bliss !
Wow, thanks for that link. That's amazing! And it works in Windows 10. And I love that it has the Amiga music because that's the version I had and always liked the David Whittaker BGM.

Yeah i had it on the C64 and PS1 that was a massive disappointment

That Zzap review was ludicrous. While I agree it's a brilliant game they refused to give it a rating at all. So utterly pretentious 🙂

Can't be understated how mindblowing that 3D and pan+tilting was for the C64 days.
This was a great game. The suspense and the mysticism was thrilling, trying to get your next move out before the Sentinel looked at you.

I mean o.m.g this is literally an existencial philosophical masterpiece .
I had this as a kid. I dearly wanted to get into it but I'm afraid I just didn't understand what it was about.
6510 chip in the C64, a variant of the 6502 ✌

Imagine someone doing a speed run of this for all 10000 levels...

Building trees provides protection from the gaze of the Sentinel.
@@Holty48 Really? ‘thought it [the Sentinel] would still see me, as they [the trees] are rather thin… ‘k, guess that could work. Cheers mate!

Classic !!
Col, has anyone ever told you that sound like Brian Cox?

Augmentinel is absolutely fantastic, IMHO the best and easiest way to get hooked on Geoff Crammond’s masterpiece!
