My father introduced me to this song when I was in high school. I came home very late on night and tried to sneak undetected. My dad was sitting in the family room in the dark and called me as I was creeping up the stairs. I thought, "Uh-oh, I'm in trouble again." But he just wanted to share this song with me. We listened to it two or three time, sitting there in the dark. It's so beautiful. That remains one of the many sweet memories I have of my dad. I love this song. Thank you. Peace
Wouldn't you know that John Denver's greatest tune is actually performed by Denver's lead guitarist, Mike Taylor. Thank you Mike! "Late Winter Early Spring" really touches the soul. I played it a thousand times in college as stress reduction from exams. This instrumental reminds me of another similar tune done by Bill Purselll and it is entitled "Our Winter Love". Runs along the same lines. Check it out. Daniel
It turns out--and I did not know, or simply whiffed--that the last important line the whole season suite comes after after the end of "Spring" (which is not this number---this is "Early Spring"). There is Mike Taylor: "There were...there were some good things in there." At which point I'm almost arranging my own epitaph. I want only this one tune: "Early Spring" ..followed by that ending comment. "Yeah, there might have been a few good things in there." But no one will ever know or care anyway. Still...It's all good.
In 1974, I was blessed to have my 2 band mates play this song while my bride and party came down the isle. Almost 46 years later I can still remember this event like it was this afternoon. I had never thought that our love, laughter, and life could have grown to where it is today. Only by the Grace of God and a loving wife, could this man say “Thank You Lord for this blessed life!” Funny how a well written song can bring back many precious memories of life. Aloha, Kirk Hinton

I'm 60 now, but since my teens I have loved John Denver, my mom used to accuse me of living in the John Denver dream world.I please guilty. No other song carried me into that dream state like Late Winter Early Spring. With a fire crackling in the fire place and snow falling outside, there is no where closer to heaven than we can be as mortals.
When I was riding a bicycle across the United States in 1977, we camped at a pass high in the Oregon cascades. That night me and a friend of mine played this song on two guitars. He had a 12 string and I had a six. The location and situation were perfect. I will never forget that feeling.
A friend just sent this link to me. Been a fan since 1968 when I first met John. Possibly one of the most beautiful and spiritual pieces of guitar music ever written - so soothing. I was curious that Mike Taylor's name was only mentioned once in these comments. Mike composed this piece and played the lead parts to John's peaceful chord progression. Mike was John's guitarist for several years and played the well known lead guitar intro lick to Country Roads as well as the recognizable riff to Rocky Mountain High. Mike is on almost all the tracks on the RMH album and his playing made that album so very special. He was a special talent I had the pleasure of meeting him on a few occasions - quiet, humble and a super nice guy. He passed in 2010. Lovely video by the way - wonderful images!
I never knew that legendary lead intro to Rocky Mountain High was Not John Denver ! Wow I assumed it was John, for 50 years ! THANKYOU for posting this . And to Mike Taylor , rest in peace and thankyou for your talents, I will be thinking your name from now on every time I hear those magical licks
I managed to come by a gorgeous D 41 Martin in my 20's and though I was never more than a very moderately accomplished acoustic guitar player, I loved this song so much that I taught myself this entire lead just by listening to the cut over and over again on my turntable. Then I got a book that had the rhythm chords in it, and got my brother to sit down with me and play the rhythm chords while I got to pick the lead that I had learned so painstakingly. We both enjoyed it immensely and 50 years later as I listen again to this cut, I can hardly believe I could once play that wonderful lead. Life is long, but any music that one can make is never wasted time. I still love this cut!!
By far my favourite Instrumental track that JD ever recorded. I often play this in the car on a long trip and keep repeating it over and over again. It always relaxes me and takes any stress away. :)
This was my first song I learned on guitar. My brother(like a brother,we grew up together)/friend/roommate in college taught me the rhythm part and he played lead guitar. I can't listen to this song w/o tears.....miss you Joe! God bless you brother! I know you're playing guitar somewhere in heaven.
My mother just sent me to hear this today because she had just told a story on Facebook of her and my father playing this for a wedding. Today is 23 years since he died and this song is now going to play through my afternoon while I cry and remember how much I loved him.

I had learned to play this song by listening to it for hours on end. I joined the military and didn't touch a guitar for years. Then one day, I picked one up and played this song start to finish. I really love this tune.
I learned it the very same way when I was living on my own after graduate school. I haven't played for many years now, but just hearing it again makes me glad that at one time I could play it. And all the comments are true, it has not lost one bit of its charm, beauty and crystalline perfection over the years.
