    playing in a band definitely is in my opinion the best and most important thing you can do as a guitarist or musician in general. you get a) an incentive to play and improve, b) a way of breaking out of 'your own way of practicing', c) you can get into a musical entourage, d) the funnest thing u can do with music.

I did nothing but playing jazz for 2 years. I was fortunate enough to have friends that was really into it. If I were to put that effort by myself I dont think I would have made it.

      @feiticeirafatale561 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wrong attitude. If you dont know how to play it (and I mean - basics, not some advanced shredding) youll never be able to express yourself. There are few thing that you need to learn and then to master it. At that point just keep doing it. I liked what Steph Carpenter from Deftones said about his playing - "I just do the same things for 20 years and Im getting better at it" and hes not some technical player but is a fantastic musician. Be open for new things and go for it when you feel like it. I learned a lot from just going for it and was always more about melody than speed, never even understood fast playing and when you should use it.

    I was never good at guitar but I loved it and had fun playing with my friends. After about 12 years off I decided to buy a guitar again and I absolutely suck. I really thought I'd have more time to play and at least some skill leftover from my younger days. The only thing I've learned in the year since I picked it up is the theme song to Bluey, for my toddler, and that's honestly just as much fun as playing classic rock and pop punk songs with my friends. I hope to get better, these videos give great tips, but I'll be happy as long as I can strum a few chords without hitting dead notes.

Nothing else really seems to interest me but music and next year I'm doing my final exams and then after that I will be moving onto college. I'm taking music as one of my courses and I really do want to do well and perhaps seek further education and attend music school. It's a hard career path to go down, but it's something I really want to do. I guess all I can do is improve my craft as much as possible and work hard, but it scares me what the future might hold.

  • @demoleramera

    Don't know how helpful this reply is, but I recently got over quite a long period of "plateuing" with my playing. And one of the biggest reasons was mentality more than anything. I stopped thinking that I HAD to improve, that I was not worthy of even holding a guitar unless I could to this thing or that thing on it. And rather, started thinking that I WANTED to improve, and get better. And after that, playing got a lot more fun and less stressfull. And I think a lot of people get's intimidated by the sheer possibilities of what they can potentially do on their instruments, and feel a lot of pressure to become great at it. But that strive to get better than also, in my experience, make you blind to the things you have learned and all the improvements you done if you've been playing for a long time

    Zen Guitar is the first guitar book I read. I highly recommend reading.

    That solo at 2:01 had gorgeous tones, reminded my of Speedway At Nazareth (the live version with EmmyLou Harris) th-cam.com/video/vs91er7AZmg/w-d-xo.html . I love the part about phrasing, breathing. Most heavier rock genres suck (in my mind) due to lack of phrasing. Shredding is impressive, but without a musical story, it's just musical masturbation. Sammy, you have great taste and excellent playing skills. Great video!

    Before I watch the video: practice and consistency?

    I’m older than Sammy - maybe a little more jaded - but this is all good advice. The only thing he didn’t say explicitly in this video is hear what you’re playing over and adapt. Hit wrong notes and bend them to the correct pitch. That can add some flavor, Marty Friedman and others made this part of their style. Just don’t overdo it. Relax, have fun and find your style.

    "How do I get good at guitar?"
    Certainly through watching a ton of youtube videos but never actually practicing 😄

    I have two friends that are better musicians than me (one guitarist and one drummer, i play guitar) but everytime i show them my music etc i get really demotivated and feel bad about myself with a sense that im wasting my time with my music. I dont know if the problem is with them or with me though?

    Do you have multiple courses? I had a teacher for while but I never feel like he taught me anything. I still know nothing about the guitar. I can strum chords and play other solos, but I don’t know everything behind the guitar. And I really want to learn
