EXO's biggest and richest fanbase is in China. Just imagine what would happen if China never banned Kpop. Cheries can still support EXO but it would be really amazing without the current restrictions. Not only for EXO but also other groups.

We are still able to listen to k-pop here in China; it's not like it's 100% banned and out of our reach. The korean celebrities just can't come here to promote themselves (in korean) anymore, because there were issues with them coming to China to wrack up some money when they lost their popularity in Korean in the past. Their exposure on media is also limited, but they are still here. Like, WayV was on Happy Camp (really influential and famous variety show here) literally 2-3 weeks ago. It also ties into the promotion of C-pop. Overall, it's banned on the media, economic level, but people still have access to it and talk about it.
ps: The ban isn't much of a ban in my opinion. We don't get jail time or fines (at least not me). It's more of censorship lol. Also, I love how the people in the comments have more of a problem than me, like, sis, stop it.
edit: also, i hope people are not comfortable with the idea that we wholeheartedly accept such censorship like brainless idiots. i mean, if we accept the government limitation on foreign sources, why the hell am i here on youtube? things take time to change, and as years passed by, china is lifting the kpop policy, which is intended to benefit to the nation rather than denouncing cultural diffusion.

Interesting, I was quite certain that the ban was the government’s way of retaliating for THAAD.

    • @may-yq1il
      @may-yq1il 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Day Lisborn it could be, there’s a mixture of causes so you can’t really pinpoint one. the point i’m trying to get across is that k-pop isn’t exactly *banned* as people still have access to it and even variety shows use kpop music as bg music. it’s more of a censorship or limitation

The guy on the green hoodie have the best answer:
It doesn't matter how talented the idols are (whether it is from Korea, Japan, China or wherever) if there is not a good management, then there is little chance for that group to be globally successful.
Also, one of the big points that I think, personally, makes K-pop go global and not C nor J Pop is the market; China is a huge country, Japan as well, so they have all the market they want/need within their borders. Korea however is a rather small country, so they need to aim overseas if they want to have a super profitable group/brand.
Also, the fact that China has their own sns kinda makes it difficult. I'm an old fan, and when K-Pop was mainly based on cyworld, it was also super hard to get info, but now agencies are using the same sns that most of the world do so it's easy to access the information. China still have their own stuff, of course in Chinese, so for people like me who doesn't speak the language, it is SUPER hard to get info.
I'm a Super Junior fan, and I kinda saw the evolution, and believe me, getting information of Hangeng after he left the group, it's 10 times harder

Also, Japan's music industry is 2nd largest in the world, only America's music industry is bigger than Japan's. So yeah, J-pop artists make enough money in their own market and the competition is so stiff there so most wouldn't want to risk losing home market by expanding overseas. And it's also why Kpop idols want to debut in Japan.

Tbh Lay has it the hardest. Him being the Youth Ambassador prohibits him from promoting in Korea or with EXO. For example with Tempo, he took a huge risk that could've been fatal to his career. I feel like this ban is slowly taking him away from us. He always talks about how he's still EXO'S Lay, and how much he loves his bros. Plus his members miss him. I know that his heart is in the right place, but with the way things are right now, it feels like he's not a part of us anymore. And it's really heartbreaking because we feel empty without him. OT8 stans fail to realize that it's not his fault, that he doesn't have a say in this. I just wish that they'd open their eyes and stop hating and dragging him. Yixing has the purest soul ever. And his love for EXO and EXO-LS is real. I love you Lay, I hope that someday you'll be free to come back to us.

I'm an American. I listen to both Kpop and MandoPop. I prefer ballads in Mandarin and and more energetic music in Korean. For Americans who aren't bilingual, I can say that one of the most common reasons I hear from my friends about why they prefer kpop over MandoPop is because Mandarin is soooo difficult to learn and understand. It also sounds awkward to the American ear when spoken quickly. However, when Sung slowly, it is magically soothing to the American ear. The other big draw with kpop is performance and access to offstage life. Korean labels have figured out how to give fans what feels like a backstage pass into an idol's daily life. That "personal" connection is unique, and something youth Americans highly value. Even Yixing fans have lost that connection to him since he left Korea. He no longer updates his fan cafe or records video from home... and forget about Instagram or TH-cam.

I think the reason why Kpop became so big is because a lot of American culture was incorporated into it originally. Then they developed so much stylistically (musically and visually) they are able to further work on this foundation that they have built, and develop their own unique style.
China's media has pretty much always been blocked and filtered by the government. In my opinion, unless Chinese people are able to have complete access to unfiltered internet and media, creating music that is globally popular is an uphill battle. It's hard to create something that everyone likes if you've never been exposed to music that's not made where you are from.

I don’t know if it’s just a cultural style, but the editing in some of the shows drives me crazy sometimes because the cuts can be abrupt. I honestly dont't like to call all Chinese music C-pop. It is much more different compared to idol groups. In China the most popular singers are NOT groups but are soloists. Which is really different from korea. Despite havibg listened to kpop for 8 years now, I do not agree with most of the people in the video. The most popupar and well-known singers in China had always been Chinese celebrities like JJ Lin, Jay Chou. Most ppl actually doesnt have an interest in kpop, and idol groups singing ability has alwayd been criticized, no matter if it is kpop or chinese groups. Just like is Korea, idols are idols, and singers are singers. Its just China has preferred singers morr than idols.

@@Busha69 Yes there are not only idol music in Korea, but isn't it a fact that they are way less popular than idol groups nowadays? When we say K-pop, doesn't idols come to mind? How many kpop fans actually goes out stream and buy soloist albums? However, in China, as I said previously, is different, the most popular artists are solo singers, not idol groups. Soloists also have longevity over idols in terms of career. Its also why I don't like to call Japanese music J-pop, its because their music culture is vastly different. They have a lot of bands, and enjoys rock music more. So when you try to refer to Chinese music C-pop, and Japanese J-pop, it doesn't represent them at all, because we don't put priority on idol pop culture like Korea, so when you just say C-pop, we would think you are talking about Chines idols which is not the case. Especially, when korea itself defines idols as only idols, and artists as artists, due to their singing ability and artistry. So why ask about C-pop when we have always preferred solo artists. I also have never understood the generalization of a country's music into just pop, you don't hear US musicians being referred to as A-pop.

When i visit beijing my cousins and friends are always listening to bts,exo,got7 etc. In terms of popularity and to whom they listen the most i think they like bts and exo at the same level then big bang got7 vixxx iu taeyeon twice snsd etc. But they don’t usually talk in public about it and almost most of the teenagers know that others listen to it. My cousin sister said it is more fun to listen knowing it’s banned there and it makes the music more exciting.

I agree with the girl, Chinese dramas are getting much better. I never thought I would but I'm slowly moving towards Chinese dramas rather than korean dramas. I remember back in the day, the Korean government supported KBS to create a fully subtitled KBS world. This introduced dramas to the world. Korean dramas were popular first, and with that, they brought kpop. If the Chinese government supported more subtitling efforts, it would be much more popular.
However, I think kpop and cpop can co-exist. Cpop favours ballads with very good lyrics. Even their fast paced songs from Mayday have very poetic lyrics. Whereas kpop delivers polished looks and choreography. I see Cpop groups trying to follow the kpop model, and it's very difficult to stand up against the legendary lyricists from the 2000s era and before. So a lot of the older stars like Jay Chou and JJ lin are still really popular.

I have asked the staff in AOMG once about if there is possibility to perform in China and he said they have the problem with the visa thing. Even if you can't understand what their saying sometimes the way they sing the song hits your damn heart you know 💀.
