  • Before, during and after the Leadville 100 Trail Run.
To explain what happened simply, I paced the race incorrectly and started too conservatively thinking about saving energy for the night portion of the race.
I came into the halfway mark at mile 50 just 7 minutes before the cutoff and then turned around to try and make it back up and over Hope Pass in time for the 10 pm cutoff at mile 62. The issue here was standing between me, and the cutoff was the most challenging and steepest part of the course for me. Uphill is not my strength, and I did not pace the race well enough to give myself enough time to complete the climb in time. Towards the top of the climb at over 12,000 ft, I realized I would not have enough time to make it back in time and that my race was over.
I will never forget that moment at the top of Hope Pass and the feeling of failure, shock, and disappointment.
For months, I put everything (or what I thought was everything) into this race and came up short on a strategic mistake.
It has taken me a while to release this video because editing and watching it is a stark reminder of the reality that I did not finish. I can’t lie, it was HARD the few days/week afterward. I am not used to coming up short on physical challenges coming up short on challenges AND not having the ability to attempt them again rather quickly.
Coming up short on this race is teaching me new levels of patience, acceptance, self-love, and tenacity.
I am incredibly grateful to have such a supportive team around me. They poured immense love and support into me after the race, but it was not landing in my cup for the first few days. It was such a vibrant reminder that, I am responsible for my own mindset and growth.
The mantra now is simple. Reflect, regroup, and start the training for THE COMEBACK. 2024.
Thank you for reading this and supporting me.
I hope it inspires you to get out and attempt something you’re scared of, no matter what it is!

Good video Mike. I ran next to you for a lot of the race. I’m actually on your video a few times! Also ran next to Joey a bunch and finished about 15 minutes behind him.
It was brutal conditions out there and, as I’m sure you know, with a 56% DNF rate, this was one of the toughest race conditions they had for the last couple decades. Great job and I hope you are recovering emotionally. Great effort.
Regarding tough conditions: The men's winner was over 17 hours for only the second time in 12 years. The women's winning time was the slowest since 2008. The finish rate of 43%, also, was the lowest since 2008. Lots of folks cramping up since the forecasted high was 64 but instead topped out at 79 degrees. Again, no shame in a DNF in a year like that.
    Great effort!

it'd be a good idea to run as many ultras (probably 50km's to reduce chance of injury) as you can before your next 100 to gain as much experience as you can to come back smarter next time

Thanks for the advise. I just completed my first 100 about a month ago. (2 months post Leadville)

DNF is better than DNS (did not start), you toed the start line & kept going & going & going. That takes courage & strength, as does sharing your story here. You can hold your head high.

Great video. Was an honor to be there for your race regardless of how it ended. I am so proud of your effort and all you learned. Kelly was a rock....so happy to hang with her and the rest of your team. Loved the binders, gift and everything you did to pull this off!

"If you reach 100% of your goals then you are horrible at setting goals" - I think of that quote often. I had my first DNF 2 years ago and it was the best experience of my life (after the fact of course). Learned more from that DNF (and the subsequent 800 hours of TH-cam videos figured out what happened) than I have the last 20 years of having success in races. Keep on getting after it bud!! Love the video and new subscriber.

Great job! This year was my first attempt as well. I missed the cutoff at the Winfield 50 mile turnaround. I’ll see you next year. We have unfinished business to accomplish. Let’s go!
