  • The video shows experiments on a number of stainless steel tubes, which were tested to destruction, under external hydrostatic pressure. This work is of much importance in the design of deep diving submarines in our oceans. One of these tubes collapsed at an external pressure of about 1000 bar; which is equivalent to a water depth of about 10 km!

What a cool way to test these cylinders, so simple.

    Hello, very interesting.
I want to send a steel cylinder 20 cm diameter x 30 cm length, down to 200 meters of sea water. How thick should the walls be ? It would greatly help me to have an informed answer on this.

Do you test watches there? I am trying to find what 20 bar means in watches . My watch and others I have had have always been in meters. Mine is 200 meters. However a watch I was considering said 20 BARS ? Any Ideas. Thanks If You don't test watches you may consider it .

At depth of 200 metres pressure is approximately 20 bar (10 metres = 1 bar).
Do take notice that number written on watch case doesn't mean you can actually dive to the depth indicated since movement of the hand at certain depth may produce greater pressure than the pressure of an object at rest at same depth.
If the watch has 50 m (5 bar) or less water resistance, it is not meant to be used for swimming in the sea.
You can safely swim (or dive couple meters) with 100 m (10 bar) or higher.

How much maximum pressure or compression it can generate in bar ?

      1 bar = 100000 pascal, normal air = 1.01325 bar = 14.72 PSI

can you share what type of steel (if stainless), the schedule and the OD for your test?

We checked lot of position but result was failed,I need to do check upto 50 bar external pressure test in my sample Tubes. If u have any input?? Plz share with me
