I’m with Noris. Her performance completely disregards the lyrics. Musical theater training - or, at least, serious vocal coaching - is needed here. With her superb vocal chops, imagine how powerful and moving this performance would have been if she knew how to communicate the lyrics.
I know what the issue is: The pacing is too fast causing Ashanti to sound choppy... and it really hinders the emotional connection. This song should be slowed down and allow the singer to take it where they want in the moment... This has the feel of a high school or community college production 🤭
Okay, so I've rewatched this numerous times and I take back my initial comment of saying that she did "just fine". She sounded amazing here, but acting-wise, as much as I hate saying it, the reviews are spot on in saying that she can't act. I understand singing and staring into space, but damn. Ashanti just looked bored and sleepy. She delivered NO emotion here whatsoever. I mean hell, Diana Ross' was a bad choice for The Wiz but at least she still delivered the emotion of the song despite the fact that I don't think her voice is all of that.
WOW I JUST WASS SAYING THAT AS I REWATCHED HER PERFORMANCE AND YES SHE SOUNDS GOOD, BUT HER ACTING IS TERRIBLE AND VOCALS ARE SATISFACTORY!!! SHE HAD HER AGENT PULL STRINGS TO GET THIS AND SHE WORKED HARD TO ACCOMMODATE AND FOR THAT I RESPECT IT.
+Chris Kent Yeah, I mean, her vocals do fit the role, but at the same time, there is no passion or emotion in her performance. I dunno, but her acting here makes me wanna run away from home rather than thinking about it.
I'm not trying to be mean or anything. I think Ashanti is really beautiful and, no doubt, sweet, but come on. The delivery of the lines was mediocre and came off as completely fake. Ashanti embodies someone who can pull of the LOOK. She's also talented vocally, but acting-wise, she destroyed this and it's sad because she got compared to Diana Ross as the sole member of the cast who stuck out like a sore thumb. XD
A little to to straight toned for me. Where is the vibrato? She needs to get the ee vowel fixed and vibrate girl. As she really has the goods in there under the hood but the motor is pressed.
First Muppets Wizard of Oz and then the wiz!!!! She is a wonderful Dorothy and her voice is so beautiful.
She did great. She can sing!
Wow I don’t know Ashanti could sing like that ❤
She better hold that last note !!!!!

Ashanti?
She did better than I thought! This is a Stephanie Young song, only! Like Dream Girl's! Only Jennifer Holliday can sing And I telling You
.

+Daniel Raphael Vibrato? She's a pop/RnB singer
Exactly. I'm not sure that she was the right fit for such a iconic character.
maybe if you would have attended live instead of watching a camera phone video, you would have heard the vibranto.
+Daniel Raphael I can hear vibrato in her sustained notes, and vibrato alone does not a good singer make.
Were you even listening to her sustained notes, especially the last one. Her vibratto could definitely be heard during those parts.
Hmm. Well, she sounds like an actual child. At least, she got that right.
She can def sing but I actually think Shanice in The Wiz live did a much better job.
+Chris Kent I agree. Shanice just totally blew me away in her soul felt performance.
Chris Kent plus she's younger :)
Ashanti can sing, no denying that. She can’t act though. She looks like she’s singing in a concert.
Is it possible to view this show anywhere maybe a library ?
