Sometimes we just have to face the fact that we can only do SO much for clients! But, if they don't want to be honest with themselves its up to them we try our best to be honest about the condition of their boat especially if money is tight and they are struggling. How have you handled such situations in our own life or business? As they say sometimes the "Truth Hurts"
Have had some issues with 5200 in the past, but this is rare in my experience. Never found any other product I trust as much below the waterline, though. My biggest gripe about it is that if you're not very careful about cleanup, you will have 5200 on everything you own before the end of the day!
After reading the comments about the 5200, I felt compelled to add my 2 cents. I have kept used tubes for several years in the refrigerator while between boats and managed to successfully use them for many different applications.
I generally wait 24 hrs to trim excess and check for setup. I've even used 4-5 year old stuff that I had to cut the tube open to use, but only on non thru-hull fittings above the waterline such as bedding cleats and deck mounted hardware. Good stuff
Hi,, VERY much like your Chanel, Also thatnk you for you servise sir !!!! Being around Boats my entire life (56y now) And Also being a professional caulker 9323 years) both commercial and residential.Epoxy, polyuria, silicone, AND Urethanes Hvae ALL changed SO much over the years due to new VOC codes and taking out all the solvents that made these products REALLY preform. Sieka,Dow corning, Tremco, Pecora, are all VERY good materials but they are still just human. Have a great day and thanks for doing your Chanel !!!!
Appreciate you watching Albert and sharing your great insight! Yes its stinks that these materials are not standing up the way they use to makes our jobs harder!
Yes, I have had 5200 not cure. What a mess to remove. I do have better luck with the fast cure. It must have a harder in it. I speculate that is all goes back to EPA regulations that cause everything that worked well years ago now to be of poorer quality….
You’re exactly right what a mess that 5200 makes! So true …crazy how such poor quality items are sold to us today and we get less & they charge way more!
I have to notify clients that there is risk of sealant failure, have them sign a notice, keep documented test samples. It sucks to be compromised by bad batches of sealant. Often the dates of expiry are past the shelf life.😢
I have had trouble with 5200 taking a long time to set up. I have learned to give it at least 48 hours to cure. If you don’t give it that long your are going to have a problem if you’re submerging it. If it is out of the water then given enough time it will cure and when it does cure it’s be best adhesive I ever used.
Yeah we let it dry for about 7 days and still had the issue! We recently did a satellite install and our guys were cleaning up old stuff that didn’t cure either. It can happen ….
Really enjoying your channel. Great information. Currently in Stuart on our 48’ Kadey Krogen trawler. Headed to Marathon ( Marlin Bay) for the month of February. Ours is an older boat so I’ve been going through a lot of the systems. Learning as I go.
I have not had a problem this past year. But only used one tube in past year, You might have got a bad batch. I have to change out all my fuel hoses on my outboard. 13 yo e-tec 225hp. But I will change out any fuel hoses at 10 yr mark. You got the best job in the world. working on the water in the keys. But working on some boats wouldn't be fun at all.
I've had exactly the same problem with 5200. Came out tacky and never seemed to set. I had used the same tube for a tiny job a few years before, so maybe the fact that the tube had been opened caused the problem. I didn't check the expiry date on the tube. We wanted to seal a gasket in the cabin which was above the waterline, so anything would have worked. Perhaps 4200 or Sikaflex would have been a better choice
I’m not a pro, but for the last few thru hulls I’ve done on my boat is use the 4200 because it seems to not be as runny, seems to get tacky faster and it’s easier to remove if heaven forbid you do have to change that part again.
Yes, I replaced all the through hulls on my boat. One of the through hulls started leaking affer a couple of years. I took it apart and the 5200 was soft and had not set. it came right off.
Depending on the hose and water, if it's salt or fresh mostly we deal with fresh sometimes we will deal with boats the do the great loop but that's very rare Salt/fresh - internal coolant hoses every 4-5 years - diesel hoses every 2-3 years - gas hoses every 2 years minimum - sea/fresh water cooling hoses every 4 years
hose of that type, but not limited to those hoses only, dry rot, crack, more over here is a test if the engine is runnable, spray it with a combustible fluid, the engine dies or accelerates now you know, often maybe every three years, it's not about waiting, it's about being proactive. it all goes bad, if it is a suction transfer type hose under Exstream heat, check it often to see if it will pull fluid through the carcass of the hose, the same for doing that check on a running engine to see if it speed up or die. Doesn't matter what brand / flavor the unit is, the same check fits them all, old school, smoke test is an other means for testing for vac leaks, or other wise. I had super duty cat hyd-hose, so cooked hard, never leaked a drop, remove the hose, brake in half like brittle plastic. I hear tell that salt air / water pretty much has it's way with everything.
Check the shelf life, wouldn't imagine its an issue for you in your location. But it does have a shelf life of 24 months from manufacture and in smaller more remote places you can find it at or over its use by life on the shelf
Sealants are not created equal. Read the fine prints and application instructions. My learning curve was following the engineers' writin materials list and instructions on a 19foot reactor seal. #@24 hour drying time required "do not wet"
Excuse my lack of knowledge - I am a landlubber but love boats … but if this 5200 stuff does not work why use it? Is there no substitute? There is nothing more irritating than redoing a job when you absolutely know it was done correctly the first time.
This is a great product normally! Its just that we have had a few that haven't done so well as of lately! Believe me we are not ones for doing a job over ...

Yup lucky to live where we live and yes some boat jobs are a nightmare! Sounds like we aren’t the only ones that have got a bad batch.
Soft start systems are good for many systems switching high loads between power level changes.
Yes we see them on a lot of the bigger units. Thanks for watching.
I added one to my home AC so I can use a generator during power outages to keep cool.
They have smart start for central ac units.

I agree 5200 has changed and is a different product in recent years. We find it is much thinner in density.
Which isn’t good depending on where your using it 👍
Ive heard of those being used with small generators to start a/c units.
Yes.
A lot of Rv'ers have them on their rigs so it doesn't hit too hard if they are running generator or multiple AC's on 30 amp supply.
