    I gigged with an E20 back in the day. Now retired I want to start playing again for fun, I definitely want another Roland and this very good review convinced me to buy the BK3 ... thank you for taking the time to make this video.

    After browsing loads of clips for just how to get to the styles without the need of a ruddy "app" and coming up short each time, I find this one and have my answer within the very first minute!
    Oh, and the reviewer himself is just an added bonus, as always :)

    Had the BK3 and was impressed, how professional a keyboard can be in this price range, has also part equalizers and so much other thing. I sold it, because it couldn't add anything to my othe keyboards.

    Hi!
    Is there anyone who can answer whether Roland BK-3 offers the possibility that the built-in (pre-programmed) drum rhythms / drum styles can be played alone - without further programmed accompaniment, so I can play on my guitar or my bass with only the drums / drum styles?

    • @JohnCouplandguitar
      @JohnCouplandguitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but with difficulty. You have to drop out the volumes of the bass and the accompaniments then store the result as a user pre-set.

    • @johanrosenring8679
      @johanrosenring8679 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnCouplandguitarThanks for your prompt reply!
      I make - on an amateur level - various recordings of my own tracks in my home studio. In this connection, I need pre-programmed drums / drum styles - with variations - and a good sound library of acoustic, electric and electronic instruments suitable for folk, rock and world music. I therefore do not need the bass and accommodation facilities.
      I was hoping that BK-3 could give me that, because I can get it at a price that fits my wallet. But do you see any other options regarding keyboards that can give me these options?

    What setting do you have for the 'Key Touch' velocity curve? Even with the setting on 'Low', I find it way too sensitive. I never had this problem with my Roland G800. I used to have the touch on that set to medium.

    • @JohnCouplandguitar
      @JohnCouplandguitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just use the default setting. The downside of working in music stores is that you develop, 'Rubber hands,' which adapt to whatever guitar or keyboard you are faced with and so tend to lose your objectivity.

    • @tclef
      @tclef 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thankyou for the reply. I have to set the backing keyboard balance to 5 towards the keyboard so I can hear the melody with the 'naturalpiano' or any other piano. Then I get notes dramatically different in velocity. Must be my technique. ..

    what's the use of arpeggio?. Roland bk3 doesn't have it, does arpeggio are needed for a keyboard?

    • @JohnCouplandguitar
      @JohnCouplandguitar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Arpeggio means, 'Broken chord,' e.g. a chord of C is made from the notes c,e,g so an arpeggio might be played cegecege one after the other as opposed to all at once. Automated arpeggios are only of use to beginners who have yet to master this fairly simple technique.

  • @MrIcelander

    At 9:00 - I'm afraid you may have slightly misunderstood how that actually works there, Mr. Coupland. The electric guitar & bass sounds are _not_ designated to lower and upper halves of the keyboard as you seem to have presumed (and that deep sound you mistake for bass on the Jazz guitar _is_ the Jazz guitar, just at an impossibly low octave so it _sounds_ like a bass guitar!), but rather that the button you press to get to the electric guitar & bass has a _dual_ function: Press it once for the guitars and again for the basses. Plain & simple :)
    I've been meaning to point this out to you for ages, but since this is such an old demo video and you don't even own this model anymore, it rather felt redundant. My "Sheldon Cooper" brain, however, just wouldn't let it go so there you have it anyway (late to the party as that may be).

    Is it worth the buy?

    • @JohnCouplandguitar
      @JohnCouplandguitar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That largely depends on which voices you need for your own particular sound. The choir sounds on this are better than the competition. To me that matters but perhaps not to you. The only thing that bugs me about this keyboard is the lack of a wheel to spin quickly through the sounds so the answer is, 'Yes, it is worth the buy.'

    • @JohnCouplandguitar
      @JohnCouplandguitar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. If you dig far enough into the menu, you will find Cut Off, Resonance, Attack, Decay and Release but not Sustain. As with any synth you start with something close to your target sound and adjust the levels till you get what you want.
