    I’m a machinist and I file a lot of metal so I wanted to say that it’s easier to file in downward motions only. Otherwise you could risk pulling the sharp edges back up. Hope that helps!

    To save yourself some energy & some ear breaking squeak-age: metal files usually only work in one direction, so going back & forth doesn't do anything like sandpaper would. Just go one direction again and again. I promise it's faster & easier.

    I feel like the cost of those tools should be included in the cost of diy-ing these. Is it actually cheaper if you don't already have the tools?

    • @Jen_S_Hassler1258
      @Jen_S_Hassler1258 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Ooh, yeah, if you add in the tools it would *definitely* end up cheaper to buy it (even with shipping) but in the long run, the tools are an investment that can let you complete more projects like these.
      On the flip side, many hardware stores will rent you a tool, or maybe a neighbor/ relative/ friend of a friend has the tool you need. Never hurts to hunt around, right?

    • @savannahleslie3515
      @savannahleslie3515 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Jen_S_Hassler1258 I wish that atleast rented tool costs were included. Because while yes, you can reuse the tools, most people won't realistically use the tools enough to justify the cost since it isn't part of their job like Dani. Having the rented cost would be so beneficial to help people actually see how much it would cost them, rather than just not including any costs related to tools.

    Diane, so love your video projects. I realize your moving, but you need to bring your dinning area to the 21st century. Your dinning chairs are to high; they cut the sight lines. Please do a video on seating options: upholstered cube or a good sturdy seat with low back. I recommend using Jennifer Aniston’s Architectural Digest home spread for some inspiration. But you could pull off a lighter version for your small space. Love your work!!! Good luck on your next home. 💚

    I have been thinking about the first mirror for months, it is pinned all over my Pinterest! I was contemplating diying my Ikea Hovet mirror to look like it because the frame of the Hovet mirror is aluminum that I spray painted black, and all I would need to do is add the wood piece to the top and bottom. I think your creation looks 1000 times better but the Ikea idea could be a more budget-friendly but lesser quality hack!

      One could also use the larger Nissedal mirror in Black and just add the stained plywood. Yes, its Not Metal but you'd still get the effect for a Fraction of the cost. Espcially because you can often find it seccond Hand on craigslist and stuff.

    For those of us who don’t have the space or tools to do this - for the 1st DIY you can literally just get the Ikea Hovet mirror (£90!), spray paint it black and stick two pieces of stained wood at the top and bottom...
    Edit: Having seen the cost now, I think I’d go Ikea even if I had the tools - it would cost a third of the third 😂 And for the Arch mirror - Zara, Dunelm and Wayfair 👌🏽

I love to paint sets for local, amateur productions of theater shows (back when we had theater in person) and I often get poked fun at for painting well beyond the sight lines, but I always assume it's better to be safe than sorry, especially if the set designer changes their mind halfway through a build. • @stevejenks9940
      @stevejenks9940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      She might have another reason, but when any glass-based material has chips or breaks and you put pressure on it, it risks further damage from moving or even just temperature changes - so you could wake up one day and find a huge crack that started in that corner. If it were the first mirror she could have made that the top, but since the arch one couldn't be flipped removing the bottom was the only option.

      @@kalanlynn2067 Hiding the chip won't prevent a crack from spreading. fyi - I was responding to your comment only. Didn't read other comments. In reading Steve's comment, he is mentioning pressure on the chip and saying a crack could appear. What I am saying is that the video poster said there was already a crack. With a crack already there, it would spread with or without any covering or pressure. You want to cut away the crack to prevent future cracking by having a clean cut. It's not rocket science.

If you paint gold over red, the gold feels more metallic, vibrant and real. This is especially true if you are brush painting it on. If you are going for a silver look, paint the silver over a dark cyan blue.

    🎊Congrats...you did it!🎊
    💰Frankly, both the West Elm boutique & your DIY prices were more than my 💲budget💲 could stretch for decor.
    🤔 Found a huge floor mirror @ a garage sale for $20, so keep your 👀eyes pealed for a bargain!
    It's in the shape of your first project, but it was set into a frame like your oval mirror. This one has a wide frame, but it still feels rather flimsy for the weight.
    🛠One of these days, I'm gonna get an mdf or plywood piece to attach to the back for added stability😊.
    💜Love💜 the metal & wood mirror. The Mod Industrial Farmhouse vibe speaks to me over 70s Boho Chic. Both mirrors turned out nicely❣

    Totally love this video, especially because I've been lusting over that gold arch mirror from west elm. The only factor that seems tricky is getting ahold of all those tools I don't regularly use - I wonder how much that would add to the price, even if it's just a rental...
    Great job Danie! Thanks for being such a creative, kind, and lovely maker and for all the awesome content you make :)

      You should look up a shared makers spaces in your area! Sometimes if your lucky places will have essentially a community shared area with big tools that people don't always have or own that you can pay a little bit to use and then you don't have to invest if you don't want to or can't right now :)

      Also some places have "tool libraries", same as borrowing a book !

    • @dlsdyer9071
      @dlsdyer9071 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are now tool "share groups". You can even rent carpentry space and use the available tools. Often they require tool instruction before you are allowed to work in the space. For a newbie, that is a real bonus! If you are looking to upgrade your shop equipment, those places are great for trying before you buy.

    • @GillDawe
      @GillDawe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      For mirrors of this size, outside of Ikea, $300 is a pretty standard cost in my experience. More than I can afford to spend on a mirror atm but reasonable in my opinion.

    • @aidaalo
      @aidaalo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GillDawe that's exactly my point. 300$ is more than I (and most people) can afford to spend on a mirror

    • @Clouderin
      @Clouderin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, an expensive mirror, but to find a thrifted mirror of that size would be a miracle, and although I'm not going to be spending $300 to make my OWN version of this mirror, I can totally understand her investments in her new home! I think it's impractical to think she can dupe something worth $1000 for under a couple hundred dollars. I don't think this series is going to be "ikea hacks" because they're just not quality pieces.

    • @Clouderin
      @Clouderin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That being said, The Sorry Girls have a neat mirror dupe that they posted not too long ago (I think? Or maybe I just watched it recently) that's an industrial-style mirror made up of mirror panels. It turned out really neat as well, although I can't remember the total cost, I feel like it had to have been less than these dupes!

    • @aidaalo
      @aidaalo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you're all getting me wrong. I absolutely love Danny and her channel and, of course, she can spend whatever amount of money she wants on her new home decor. I'm just saying that for the average person, these diys are just not doable. Nor the tools nor the price is up to most of the viewers budget.
