I have mixed the kids play sand from Lowes, 80 lb, bag, clean and cheap, with the seeds it seems to go further and a more even spread. You can crack the hopper opening. Enjoyed!

yeah we just seeded about 70 acres we had graded after clearing, only we used a seed drill and the broadcast spreader. We used a rye k-131 mix ... the rye to hold the soil until the grass had a chance .
Seed drill opens a groove in the soil (furrows) as seed drops in then covers it. We don't own one just rented it for a few days. He does own the broadcast spreader though.
We burned 3 piles of trash trees/vines this week... lots more to go. 70 acres will be ready this spring to be trellised and have vines planted.
Deer are lovin the grass... ;)
But yeah rye is an annual and will give you a year of cover.. grows fast. I think about 50 cents a lb while the K is about 1$..not sure my brother buys the seed.
We did have a little erosion but put up silt fences and now that the grass has established no worries.
We will do it all again next year with another 70 acres... till we get back to the old growth woods he has (about 80 acres), and that we will keep as is. Hunt it and log out good trees that fall on their own. Big ones... oak.
Hire a dozer and loader, burn... then pick up sticks.... fun stuff. Still smell a little like campfire here LOL
Anyways I think if you own a tractor and have fields (otherwise why own a tractor) then you need a spreader, mower(bush-hog) and a rake.

Thought about seeding my weedy place. Of course, I have to do it by hand. No tractor, ya know. But I only have a couple of acres and most of it is trees. It's coming time to crank up the old chainsaw and begin to get some of my property ready for more planting! ...if it'll ever stop raining....

That's a really nice distributor and its good to hear it has lasted for so long and still going strong. I think I will have to invest in one of those. How much HP does your tractor have?... Thanks for sharing

TexasPrepper2 I heard Kubota is a good brand and better price compare to John deer. One dealer out here said John deer sells a lot of green pant lol.

Hey Mr. TPS..How are you?..Is that(Rye) seed you are planting the same as what farmers plant for grain..Like wheat and oats? I guess what I am trying to say is Grass or Grain? Thanks

This particular seed is grass... not grain. It is "Gulf Rye Grass". They say it won't reseed itself very well, but it has always reseeded well for me...

This video was several years ago, but I always have a real nice stand of winter grass.
      It reseeds itself pretty well.

What time of the year would be good to spread seed?

Usually around 6 weeks before the first fall frost, I think.

When a job is easier to do with machinery one would be more likely to do the task.
