Think you bought a dog from a small, local breeder? It could be from a puppy mill.

  • From LA Times Studios | An L.A. Times investigation uncovered an underground puppy pipeline - where people claiming to be small, local home breeders are re-selling dogs from puppy mills in the midwest, using fake ads to lure consumers.

      I’ve had to purchase every dog I’ve had because these rescues on top of paying 600 dollars have denied my 20 page applications. I’ve had dogs for many years and I love and take care of them better than people who have kids

      @@CraftyCuriosity You've "had to purchase"? I don't know of any shelters or rescues that ask $600 or a 20p application, and I've been an adopter, foster, and volunteer w/several coast-to-coast. Yet if you can't afford $600 upfront, then you can't afford a breeder pup or initial cost of care. Tell me you're a breeder/broker yourself without telling me. You're full of it, troll.🙄

      A few years ago Missouri passed a tough law on puppy mills but the next legislative session it was promptly repealed. The breeders paid the politicians off.

      yea adopt or find homeless one on street, just be sure to go around and ask to be sure it's homeless unless ofcourse its being abused and its some sort of rescue kidnapping.

    Be aware that some “backyard breeders” use the story that they’re selling the puppies for a friend who had to go out of town. We were ignorant enough to fall for it. It wasn’t until we received the AKC application that we noticed it listed a “farm” in Kentucky. Sounds innocent enough until you check into it. By then, you’ve fallen in love with your puppy and can’t imagine returning her (even if you could).

    We wouldn't know about a lot of these puppy mill horrors if it weren't for regulations, USDA inspectors, and investigative journalism. Thanks for exposing this exploitative system, L.A. Times. It must have been hard on your reporters, and even more on the inspectors who documented cruel treatment such as injuries, overheating, tiny cramped pens, and forced breeding.

    Places like Pets Mart also bought from puppy and kitty mills. They have denied it for quite some time but let's see the proof. Corporations put profits over anything else.
    To this day I've never paid one red cent of money for an animal. Even those rare or expensive breeds are still given up from time to time. Have patience and one will show up in a shelter soon enough. That's how I got my French Bulldog and I didn't have to pay $400 for it but just an adoption fee of $65.

      In fact, many breeds have dedicated rescues. If you yearn for, say, a poodle, Dalmatian, or Maine Coon, there is very likely a nonprofit working to find and rehome them. Don't give your money to an uncaring pet-mill industry.

    Adopt (from reputable shelters/rescues*), don't shop!
    *I have to add that caveat because we adopted our puppy from what we thought was a rescue but turned out to be a puppy mill in disguise (our pup had to go to the hospital for parvo in the first week of having him; he never even left our house after we picked him up). Thankfully, he survived and is full of energy two years later, but it was still extremely frustrating.

    💯 agree
    As a dedicated MaineCoon breeder, I invite prospective owners to visit our home cattery, meet the kitten's parents, and observe their environment. We manage breeding rights carefully, breeding every 2 or 3 years, to prevent potential abuse by commercial mills.

      why do you buy a dog from a breeder?

    • @marykimble518
      @marykimble518 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@thornil2231 There are people that have spent their entire lives protecting the best bloodlines of their breeds. Don't discount their sacrifices and decades of knowledge.

    • @imnotmike
      @imnotmike 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@thornil2231 Frankly, you'll get a better dog with less hassle. You have to go through a lot of red tape to get a dog from a shelter, and it's a roll of the dice what you'll end up getting. Shelters want your work history and proof of income, and proof that you own your home, or signed documentation that you have permission to have a dog. You have to give them personal information about everybody in your household. I've even seen them require you to get written permission from your neighbors saying they consent to you having a dog. It can be a lot of work and very intrusive to get through their adoption process.
      When you get a puppy from a breeder, you know the history of that dog, and you get to choose traits that you want. It costs more, but if you are good at caring for and training your dogs, you'll end up with a better dog than if you get one from a shelter where you don't know what the dog has been through before you got it.
      And frankly, the cost of buying a purebred dog is fairly low in comparison to vet bills these days, so if the cost of buying a dog from a breeder is prohibitive for you, then you probably can't afford a dog anyways. My last vet appointment was $600 just for vaccinations and heartworm medicine for my 2 dogs, and that's going to be an annual cost. And that's standard just vet bills assuming nothing goes wrong and they never get sick. So dropping $800-$1000 for a dog isn't really that high in comparison to what you're going to be spending one way or another.
      I'm not saying nobody should get a shelter dog. There are a lot of reasons to get a shelter dog too. They need homes and deserve love.
      And if you don't have the experience with dog training or the time and patience to learn, you're probably better off getting an older dog that already has some training from a shelter. Puppies are a lot of work, and most people probably honestly aren't capable of properly raising a dog from a puppy.
      But there are a lot of valid reasons to get a dog from a breeder. I've had shelter dogs my entire life until I got my most recent dog, an English Springer Spaniel, from a breeder, and I'll never get another shelter dog. The difference is far more profound than I ever would have imagined. I've owned and loved a lot of dogs in my life, and if you'd told me 5 years ago how much better this dog was going to be than any other dog I'd owned, I would never have believed you.

    • @stannieholt8766
      @stannieholt8766 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      But more puppies are bred, often in sub-standard conditions, when people shop at for-profit puppy mills. They look at their animals purely as "product," and will churn out more to meet demand so they make more money. It's different from a nonprofit or city-run shelter that takes in whatever moms and litters people bring.

    • @ShirleySowden
      @ShirleySowden 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Exactly supply & demand keeps it going. If people stopped buying.....there still would be no shortage of dogs or cats
