I was looking for something that I could mic my classical guitar with, without having to drill holes in it. I have the opportunity to play with our church "orchestra" and need something to combat the feedback issue. I prayed about it and this is the first "mic" I've come across that seems to do what I'm looking for. 😁
The I Solo has too much muddy midrange for my taste, and it cuts out a lot of the high end. It would make it harder for the acoustic to sit well in a full band audio mix. It sounded like there was some comb filtering/phase cancellation as well. The expression system has always been disappointing, but I switched to thicker strings and started using Stringjoy strings and that helped out.
Worth noting that you can adjust EQ of the iSolo on the receiver quite a bit. And changing the mic position gives you a totally different sound characteristic as well. I've never used Stringjoy strings. I love the Earnie Ball Earthwoods on my Taylor. Has nice highs and mids and adds beef to the low end that is never there with any other strings I've tried.
How would that do with lowered action is there enough clearance especially with the hole block. Any feedback with the LR baggs? I think the LR bags sounded best with the cloud mic
Definitely enough clearance. It sits flush with the guitar top. My Taylor’s action is pretty low and no issues at all. The Baggs has incredible feedback rejection. Never had any feedback issues and never had to use a plug with it. It even has a phase switch to help as well. I didn’t test the Baggs and iSolo together in a loud environment. I might have to do a follow up video and test the limits of feedback.
So, at the price of this thing, why not just replace your electronics with the lr baggs system? They make two versions, sound hole and preamp in the hole on the side of your guitar. The ability to move between guitars seems like less of a benefit, and more of a hassle. If you’ve got multiple guitarists that do indeed bring their own acoustic each week would you be better off getting an LR BAGGS floor preamp for half the cost?
It's def an expensive pickup. But one GT-10 is a lot cheaper than installing LR Baggs in multiple guitars (if you're trying to improve the sound of multiple guitarists). Worth noting that I didn't do any EQ adjusting on the iSolo receiver or after the fact. Can def clean up those mids with EQ. The thing that the iSolo adds imo is a more authentic sound. Most transistor pickups don't sound very much like an acoustic on their own. If you just want to improve the sound of your personal guitar, and you are fine with the more permanent install, def get the Anthem. And I'm sure you could improve the sound of any guitar with the pre-amp a bit, but you can't make any of them sound more authentic with EQ, compression, etc. If they sound quaky and electronic, they're still going to. Improving the source is always your best bet.
It’s def a killer pickup! The iSolo is redundant with the Baggs anyway. I think the iSolo really improves the Taylor ES2 pickup though. ES2 is dookie on its own lol -Dillon
@@collabworship any experience or a/b videos with the Anthem versus LR Baggs' soundhole pickups? No personal longterm experience with the Taylor system, but definitely sounded crappy on the recording. I can definitely relate to this issue. I have a nice recording king (but the included pickup sucks...have to cut eq like crazy to get even close to sounding acoustic). In addition, there are 3-5 other players/guitars we have to account for...so it's not exactly a plug and play scenario for us by any stretch.
I’ve seen reviews of the Baggs sound hole pickup. Not a fan. Since it’s a magnetic pickup, it sounds nothing close to an acoustic guitar. The reason I pitch the iSolo is because it turns any guitar with a stock element pickup into the same kind of system as the anthem. Obviously the anthem is better because it’s optimized and integrated, but like you said, not really an option to just upgrade everybody on your team to an anthem. I didn’t even get into eq adjustments in the video, but you can manipulate the sound with the isolo quite a bit and prob get it much closer to the sound of the anthem. Acoustic guitar pickups are a headache. Most don’t sound great and there’s a lot of variability between them all….

The combination of both sounds clearly out of phase, what is the bigger problem with this kind of setup

I wasn’t really a fan of the honky mid range the isolo brought to a lot of these guitars.

I definitely preferred the LR Baggs (by itself) over all...
