What manufacturer responds to customers and industry experts like Tesla? Consumer reports says there's a break issue on the M3. Boom, a week later solved and pushed out to the fleet. Sandy says make these improvements going forward, and he's just mostly positive about the updates they did to the Model Y. And now the heat pump noise? Don't fret says Tesla, we'll make it right soon.
I leased a Chevy Spark EV in 2014-2017. Only 7,400 were ever made. You would think Chevy would reach out for feedback from early adopters for product improvement. They never did. And now we know why GM is so far behind in the EV game. Brilliant powertrain. 402 pounds of torque. If you accelerated hard, it would spin the front tires on tar strips at 35mph. But the software was god awful for the drive unit.
nomadmac I wanted they 2014 Chevy Spark EV so bad! It was a riot, quick and fun, but it only had about half as much range as I needed so I couldn’t do it. With incentives it was only like $14k new though. Hoping that future EV’s can eventually get down to that price range with 300 mile ranges. But that spark was worlds better than any of the gutless ICE cars in the category, that’s for sure
None. People ignore it, but the fact that tesla is taking complaints and feature requests off of twitter and actually implementing them is revolutionary. The problem with traditional auto, is they want to design once and build, with no changes if they can avoid them. They don't do continuous improvement, so they don't care about feedback. They think they can just market their way to sales no matter what is disliked about the product.
@@martingardens It was more an "LG Bolt" than Chevy. It was car made by MBA and accountants, without soul. Maybe it was "cheaper" for Gm in short term, but ultimately it proved to be flop.

These are the most informative Tesla video's on TH-cam. I love the detailed analysis. I own a Model 3 and have a Y on order. I appreciate the critical analysis you did of the M3 that is resulting in a greatly improved MY. The running change for sound dampening on the heat pump is great news. I hope they get the towing option out soon as a cross over without towing is just a station wagon. Keep up the great work and stay healthy.

I realize you don't have to do these and that the TH-cam ad bucks are peanuts compared to your full reports- which I assume are time-critical for your clients. These videos provide a public service in so many ways- not simply the most in-depth review of any new vehicle (down to the literal nuts and bolts), but you give Tesla owners and fans like myself a rare glimpse into the vehicle engineering and assembly process that few outside of Tesla Inc ever get to witness. That said, it must be pretty humbling to tear down a vehicle and discovering that their engineers listened to your critiques; your input contributed to build the thing you're taking apart.

This is a great series. I’m enjoying it as much as Breaking Bad and Mad Men, which we’re awesome 👏. It’s less drama, but equally compelling. Keep them coming!
I used to hate Tesla and I really didn’t even like the look of the cars. I kept seeing a million Model 3s so I went to look at one just to see what all the hubbub was. Being the petrolhead I am, I knew I’d hate it. I like manual transmissions, turbochargers, Superchargers, loud exhausts, etc. Then I drove a Model 3 LR AWD. My entire opinion of the car and company changed that day. I was shocked how much fun the Model 3 was to drive hard around curves, how quickly it accelerated and how easy all of the functions inside worked even though there’s just a few hard buttons. That was in May 2019. My partner needed a new car so I tried convincing him to get a 3 over an SUV like an X3, F-Pace, GLC, RDX, etc. After we were given a Model 3 Performance by our local sales center to keep for a weekend, he was convinced too. He ordered a white on white Model 3 Long Range AWD. I had a 2018 Accord 2.0T Touring that I really was never happy with because of QC problems with bubbled paint, rust, and especially the rough-shifting 10-speed transmission. I gave in and ordered one for myself in August, a Model 3 Performance. I had wanted to get a white one, but it was going to be weeks or months before I could get a Performance Model 3 in white, so I settled on a black one. Since I got mine in late-August 2019, I have put 20,000 miles on my Performance 3. It’s been extremely reliable. I’ve only had to take the car in to fix a rattle in the seatbelt adjuster. No mechanical problems at all. It’s gotten faster, smarter and more fun to drive due to the OTA updates. I am converted to EVs. i just long for a semi-affordable EV SUV that is capable off and on-road that would be a good replacement for my 2014 Land Rover LR4. I barely drive it anymore except in times I need to tow or go off road on my job sites. For trips, we only take the Tesla.
Now if they could only improve the paint and fit/finish aspects they'd be "almost" at the head of the pack, they have a ways to go to beat Toyota/Lexus from that point of view.
@@CFG39 that is almost the story of every petrol head, almost every one I've met who hates EV's has never drove one, I know a few who were like that, drove one and they totally got it and were converted. Nothing wrong with both though. I want an RX8 track car and a Model 3 daily, nothing wrong with enjoying both.
walter I will say the paint finish itself is not bad like it used to be. It’s just too susceptible to damage, at least the black is. I think the problem is that the state of California has so many rules on VOCs that the paint they use is less durable due to its chemical makeup which is in part mandated because where it’s made.
I really love the kits that you guys have put together for home work. Seems like you're making this happen in a really smart way given the current circumstances.
Absolutely love these videos! Sandy you are the best hands down. I'd watch videos of you taking apart toasters and explaining what could be designed better. Also it is so cool to see your suggestions are being listened to and immediately incorporated in Tesla's ever evolving fluid design process.
the model Y just look structurally like the 2009 toyota prius, just look at the configuration, from the rear under trunck to the shape of the car ,and the dashboard situation
Yep, as Elon explained on the ride the lightning podcast, that casting has (probably already) come down from 2 parts and 2 fasteners to 1 part (as Tesla are/ we’re waiting on a ‘big’ casting machine)
Engi_Nerd They should see it as an unique learning opportunity, I would think. As Elon said sometime in the past, “a well thought out critique of whatever you are doing is as valuable as gold”.
The parts designer is not alone in the decision making process. if his boss tells him to design a cheap bad quality part, there is nothing else he can do. If the team who decide the part requirement is wrong. If they tell the designer: this part need to resist 200kg shear stress for this many cycles, and in the real car, the stress is higher, its not the part designer fault.
Don't tire yourself at these times Sandy, make sure you rest and stay strong. These videos are the best thing on the internet for car people, so I can say I'm not tired of seeing you, even though I don't like Tesla that much. Also a question; isn't that trunk tub is a weak point to break into the car?
Sandy, thank you for making this effort. I think I speak for Tesla shareholders who are always ready to see how our conviction holds up regarding Tesla's important place in the energy generation and consumption shift that is coming. I live in SoCal where we have seen pollution significantly reduced, giving us all inspiration to press on. I will be sure to watch and learn on each of your VLogs.
Not tired at all of seeing you. You bring a depth and authority to your evaluations that is tremendously valuable. Thank you for the effort you put into this.

I also love the fact you're very kindly encouraging viewers to tip their cashiers - they're doing great work right now, literally putting their lives or loved ones lives at risk by working their job and they deserve all the help they can get.
Hi Sandy! Elon said at the last earnings call that Tesla is waiting on a big casting machine that will be able to cast the rear underbody in 1 piece instead of the current 2
It seems that the entire vehicle's support structure will eventually be cast in one piece: electrek.co/2019/07/23/tesla-giant-machine-produce-model-y-body-one-piece/
Here you can see a relatively big casting in roughly the same position in a BMW iNext. www.mynewsdesk.com/no/bmw-no/videos/prototype-av-bmw-inext-45148 See 0:08

You guys are just so awesome I don't even have words to describe it. Thank you for showing this car and thank you for your knowledge. I hope that in the future you guys show a little bit of other vehicles the same way. And I know that Tesla appreciates this free information. As Elon has said before there's room for improvement. Very nice job.
12:01 Sandy shaking off the straight jab haha Btw as a designer myself these videos are so informative...using the same bucket front and back is genius imo...I can watch these videos all day
this is a fantastic video series, Create all the content you can sir, you drop little gems of knowledge without even realising it, and its about a dozen a minute. Please keep up the amazing work. Your videos are riveting.
It’s fun to recognize the classic “engineering inspector” type. Someone who spent their career learning the details of an entire industry, and can now comment as a subject matter expert on practically every aspect of it. Really cool to watch such an expert. Every industry has guys like this, and as an engineer you’re bound to rub shoulders with them from time to time, and they always blow everyone away with how much they know.
Hi Sandy, I would love to see teardowns of other (electric) cars. Not sure how that could work with your existing business where these details command a lot of money. It's just been super fun and interesting to watch. Don't work too hard!
Hi Sandy thanks for your interesting videos. One little advice, if you bend the aluminum clip of your mask a little closer to the nose so it fits better and protection is better, as no side air can enter between nose and cheek.
Remember when Elon Musk said the Model Y would use only 328 feet (100m) of wire and wouldn't share the Model 3 platform .... the reality was in order to get Model Y out quickly .. it needed to extensively share the Model 3 platform and use conventional wiring .. and that's OK, as this Model Y obviously is the best Tesla yet, continuing to learn and improve, it's all good. Nice tear down commentary Sandy! .. watched all the vids so far, it's cool to see a few purchased parts in there that my engineering teams developed.
Hang in there Sandy. We love these videos. You’re the only guy we trust. Please don’t stop. And apparently Tesla is watching and participating here. That’s super cool. I love that they care enough to call and more importantly make a running change, which is one reason why I wanted to wait a bit before I got a Y. 👍🏼👍🏼
I'm loving these teardowns.. so great to see that Tesla is making the changes recommended from the Model 3 teardown and even running changes from issues with the Y.. I hope they make it easy to get existing Ys retrofitted with the heatpump cover. Keep the videos coming!
@ Yeah. Pause at 7:11 - You can see if those bolts shear off, the rigid metal will slide into the cast part and there's thinner metal below to cushion the impact.
As MD of an engineering company 35 years to global auto Ive just spent 2 days assembling a 100 off items at home and guess what it had eight m3 x 6mm and two m3 x 8mm, my 6 sigma alarm is on red alert, I built 8 wrong, wrong screws in the wrong place........if you have to have different length bolts make sure that they really have to be different so they are very different or make them all the same, Mr Monro says so! And we are kitting up work to be done at home as we speak just the same, find a way. Impressive Tesla taking feedback and responding, makes you realise everyone after the same outcome, success against the massive headwinds, they will make it. "Thats just about it for now!"

We're doing our best! Thanks for tuning in!
no Sandy, we are not tired to see you !!
Absolutely love these videos! Sandy you are the best hands down. I'd watch videos of you taking apart toasters and explaining what could be designed better. Also it is so cool to see your suggestions are being listened to and immediately incorporated in Tesla's ever evolving fluid design process.
It’s great to see Tesla products getting better over time. Thank you for these videos!
WHAT?! I look forward to these videos every day! They help pass the time and it's relaxing to watch meticulous deconstruction.
Tesla never stops. The Y is already being improved.
the model Y just look structurally like the 2009 toyota prius, just look at the configuration, from the rear under trunck to the shape of the car ,and the dashboard situation
Yep, as Elon explained on the ride the lightning podcast, that casting has (probably already) come down from 2 parts and 2 fasteners to 1 part (as Tesla are/ we’re waiting on a ‘big’ casting machine)
Imagine being the designer for these parts, watching every nut and bolt you choose get public scrutiny on TH-cam by Sandy. Rough, haha.
@Writer B.L. Alley that comment was dogshit. Do better. Jk
They probably love it if it is done by someone who knows what they are talking about, who cares and doesn't have an agenda.
Don't tire yourself at these times Sandy, make sure you rest and stay strong. These videos are the best thing on the internet for car people, so I can say I'm not tired of seeing you, even though I don't like Tesla that much.
Also a question; isn't that trunk tub is a weak point to break into the car?
During this time, seeing a new video each day is something to look forward to! Thanks for the work you're putting into it!
Hey Sandy, hi from Melbourne Australia, where I am working in Isolation from home and not really looking forward to a long winter ahead. I do look forward to your videos and your channel is actually the only one I have clicked the bell on. While I am not an engineer, I do love to know how stuff works and I really like clever design. Keep up the great work and the no BS assessments of what you find.
Sandy - Everyone is enjoying these immensely, and we all want to see as much as you want to provide.
I love these videos. I really like to see an engineer perspective on the design of this car, I think your presentation and production quality is amazing.
@@brothervance1932 nope, they could use the stainless steel , not the entire pressure casting, casting is not elastic
Le Chat Botté What stainless steel? I included a link to an article you seem not to have read.
Brother Vance it’s a year old article. And still no single casting not wiring in the Y nor Shanghai. Maybe the 2022-23 economy Y.
Here you can see a relatively big casting in roughly the same position in a BMW iNext.

It’s the opposite Sandy. We just want more videos. Please keep them coming. I’m learning so much about my Y. It seems my hard earned money was well spent
Don't worry, plenty more Sandy videos on the way. Other personalities are going to be brought in for deeper dives as we get deeper into the systems. Social distancing requirements are making it such that we can't do everything in one place, so we're getting creative! Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for putting this on youtube man. You do a good presentation and it's interesting to me as a layman fanboy of my model 3.
Your channel opened one week ago at the time of this response and already has 25K subscribers. I'm thinking people enjoy watching you and your videos!
I'm not an engineer but I like what I'm seeing just like Sandy.
I’m not at all getting tired of hearing from you. Best notifications I get on my phone.
Unbiased and to the point. Mr. Munro, you are a credit to Engineers. Watching you makes me glad I’m an Engineer.
It's great to see you. Thank you for sharing all this with us. This is a very nice break from what's going on in the world. Hope to see you soon.
12:01 Sandy shaking off the straight jab haha
Btw as a designer myself these videos are so informative...using the same bucket front and back is genius imo...I can watch these videos all day
this is a fantastic video series,
Create all the content you can sir, you drop little gems of knowledge without even realising it, and its about a dozen a minute.
These videos with Sandy are simply excellent.
Hi Sandy, I would love to see teardowns of other (electric) cars. Not sure how that could work with your existing business where these details command a lot of money. It's just been super fun and interesting to watch. Don't work too hard!
Thank You Mr.Sandy Munro for the great informative videos. I am honored to watch your videos.
Your information definitely helps potential buyers.
This such a wonderful channel with very accurate direct information from a very experienced person. I love it. Thank you.
Greetings from Germany, no one here is tired to see you. Generations of children will be named after you !
Schöner Witz, Danke , ein Lächeln zurück an dich!
Thanks for the insight you provide. As a Tesla owner....I appreciate your approach.
Keep it going!! Your videos are the first thing I look for when I get home.
Keep up the good work, 25,000 subscribers so soon is a big achievement :)
Thank you very much, Sandy! I don’t even drive, (anymore), but I find this stuff fascinating. You are “the real deal”
Love the teardowns sir. Keep up the great work. Waiting for a reveal on the octavalve
I like that you address some customer complaints and then suggest changes. The tear downs are cool! Stay safe!
I will never get tired to see u. Learning so much! Thank you for sharing your knowledge...👍
All of these videos are absolutely fantastic. Keep up the great work and stay safe!
Hello, Mr. Munro,
if you publish a video every two days you can get more than 10 minutes per video and thus get more ads. You have earned that!
Dude!!!! None of us are tired of you!!!!
Thats super awesome that tesla is listening to your recommendations and makes running changes
Save those knuckles for the CyberTruck disassembly Chief! Great info as usual thank you for your hard work.
Thanks Sandy! Wish you well too!
This is mu favourite thing in TH-cam now. Really raises the bar for all the teslatubers out here.
I'm loving these teardowns.. so great to see that Tesla is making the changes recommended from the Model 3 teardown and even running changes from issues with the Y.. I hope they make it easy to get existing Ys retrofitted with the heatpump cover. Keep the videos coming!
Yes. Those are shear bolts for collision.
So the idea would be that those bolts cut themselfs in an accident, preventing the casting piece from recieving the shock?
@ the shear bolts absorb crash energy, and when they break, they allow deformation which also absorb
@ Yeah. Pause at 7:11 - You can see if those bolts shear off, the rigid metal will slide into the cast part and there's thinner metal below to cushion the impact.
@ Part of crumple zone. Preventing people from receiving the shock. :)
@@niconico3907 wow, I see, thanks a lot!
Please, please keep on doing this! I ordered my Y a long time ago and have 9-12 (or even more?) months to wait here in Norway.
Keep em' coming Sandy these are great! While you may not like doing the camera bits, you'll look back on this fondly one day.
Great video Sandy! Keep them coming!!
I look forward to these videos every day. Keeps me going through the lockdown here in the UK...
3 people designing different parts of one product.
There should be a default bolt size where possible, only changed when absolutely necessary.
As always - great video Sandy.
Not getting tired at all. We are loving it.
