  • Few dive stores existed in the 1950's, so how did divers buy their scuba gear? Alec shows how easy it was to buy new scuba gear, by mail or phone, with free home delivery.

    Very impressive! How interesting and wired is vintage scuba. Pleasure to watch and learn scuba evolution with you Alec. I been waiting impatiently for vintage scuba video of yours. This is the best essence of your youtube channel. No one else can show us so much from the past. Stay safe Alec

    Alec....what don't you have that's vintage??!! You have everything! I got a kick out of the Sears catalog. The good old days! Keep the videos coming.

      Heck, I'm vintage, but well maintained. Loved the Sear catalogue as a kid, especially the Christmas one.

    I'm under 25 and this is my go-to scuba channel precisely because of your vintage scuba videos. I love how you present all the old equipment and explain how they work. I'm jealous of the old manuals with how to put together and repair scuba equipment. The equipment side of scuba is one of my favourite components, and I wish nowadays one could have a go at repairing gear rather than having to send off to a soon-to-be retired dive technician or back to the manufacturer. I think the technician side of scuba is yet another trade that is going the way of the dodo, and it's a great shame. The loss of that technical know-how will be bad for scuba diving long-term.

    my oh my ... that gear was very expensive back then ! Keep in mind the average yearly pay in the 1960's was around $4,000 per YEAR

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was super expensive but so new and exciting. Telling someone your a diver back in 1950's was like saying your an F1 driver today.
      Thanks for watching.

    remember well those Eaton and Seaes /simpson catalogs, they even sold rebuilt engines, exhaust systems for popular cars and if remember well tires and suspension parts.
    very good video

      I can't think of anything Sears did not sell (that's legal then). No one could buy a house today and put it up, too many laws, regulations and red tape.

    Hi Alex bring back memories!
    My mum bought everything thru
    Eatons and sears catalogs in the1950s!
    They had payment plans you could order stuff and make payments on it
    Mum ordered everything for Christmas in September !
    When I started to dive in 1967
    I read a book went to the dive store in London they wouldn't sell me gear because I wasn't certified I sent a money order to a dive shop in Toronto and they sent me gear and a full tank of air in the mail
    (Probably couldent do that today)
    after I used that tank up I went to the dive shop in London for a refill
    He filled the tank on the condition i
    never come back unless I was certified !
    I went back for the next refill and was denied
    I lived on a fish tug in Port Stanley and the gas line boat was 5 boats down they took me under their wing and got me air I
    After supper I was clearing fish tug propellers in the harbour brail (which I still do today )
    The gas line divers thought i might make a good diver and sent me for training
    I wasn't allowed to touch a tank for 6 months !
    I had to learn all the medical all the life guard first
    I was a commercial diver for 10 years in the 1970s
    we also would go in the dive shop see a new piece of gear then go home and make it
    I am the last active diver from my group
    Most have passed on or are in old folks homes !
    Always a joy watching your videos !
    Have a great day !

      Thank you very much for sharing your start in our great sport. My dear mother drove me into Lindsay every Tuesday for 16 weeks so I could complete my dive training at 16. Did commercial diving too and u/w photography. I too had trouble getting fills but our local fire station and 25 cents made me popular! More Vintage Scuba coming and thank for watching. Take care.

    I do like the idea of buying a burro along with your heavy gear. Could save on divemasters for those shore dives.

    Hi Alec, I guess in today's disposable society the era of fixing your own gear is frowned upon by manufacturers., They would rather buy a new one, there is also the liability issue if you fix it wrong then drown with an ABC brand regulator. Do you remember the old radio shack catalogues ? I would run out and grab one as soon as they came out and circle what I wanted for my birthday or Christmas then just leave it lying around . I always liked electronics as a kid who knew it would develop into a job? Take care Owen m

    The catalog was a kind of vintage Amazon or an analog Amazon. ☺️
    I can imagine to got this catalog was as similar amazing as for the kids to got an internet store which sell mostly everything. I can imagine you couldn't wait to get the newest catalog.
    How often did they send a new one, twice a year? Or more often?

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sears had 4 catalogs a year plus the Christmas edition. We went through it page by page for new toys and tools. A great time for a kid.

      Don't know that particular product but eBay is one idea. Can try posting it on www.scubaboard.com with pictures to see what the community feedback is.
      I do know of the 1966 Aqua-Lung "Yack Yack" diver to surface comms unit. Sold for an outrageous $118.50. Worked for 100 ft. Didn't last many years. Good luck.

    Why was Heathways called that?

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really can't remember how they came up the the name Healthways. My dear friend Sam Miller who passed away recently would have known the answer. The number of stone age divers like me is shrinking which is why I make these Vintage Scuba to share with everyone the crazy early days of scuba.
