  • Giving Nature A Voice - Season 2, Episode 7: Saltwater Survivors - Saving Kenya's Mangroves | Nature Documentary
Mangrove forests are among the most threatened habitats on earth, disappearing faster than even rainforests. But mangroves are also the coast’s nursery, providing shelter for 75% of commercially caught fish. Kenya has lost a fifth of its coastal forests in 25 years. Laws now protect this critical plant, the one one capable of growing on the edge of salt water. But some locals complain, that Kenya’s strict ban against mangrove harvesting has left them destitute.

I think we’ve learned that when the balance of nature is upset, things go array as in not well for nature. In today’s documentary, we feature the Mangrove forests.

Hopefully, the balance affecting us all can be restored.

The 2004 Tsunami showed how important mangrove forests are in protecting the shoreline from the sea

Just like over-cultivation of trees on land which of course help erosion from occurring. TFS !!

This is one of the best short documentaries I've seen, the footage, commentary, editing, it is all very well done. Thank you for hosting this and educating me on this, as well as for covering both the struggles of nature and the people who live with it. Not enough documentaries depict the people who are affected by economic struggles and receeding resources in the environment.

Really great documentary. It looks like now the local communities understand the importance of mangroves. I understand the people and feel for them. They needed the mangroves for their survival. Now is time for restoration and for the forests to grow again. With time they will be able to harvest some, with care. It is always easy to destroy...recovery takes time... in everything. Hoping the coasts recover very well. Kenya is such a beautiful country.....so many protected parks! and amazing wildlife!....love to visit one day ...

It seems like the locals need to be educated on the damage that they are doing to their own land. Cutting Mangroves for fire wood for cooking and wood build homes sounds like survival but, the truth is if you keeping cutting down Mangroves trees you won't have any left to build and survive, the land will become a desert with a beach. Please STOP the cutting for everyone's future and let the land heal so it can repair itself.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but stop saving all your money, lnvest some of it if you want financial freedom

Plant two for every one you cut down. But i doubt there's enough money for that. Easier to depopulate the people if they don't govern themselves accordingly.
