Mangroves - Guardians of the Coast

  • Mangroves are among the oldest and most productive wetland forests on our planet. Found in the intertidal zone, they are uniquely adapted to survive highly saline and anoxic conditions. They are ideal habitats for many terrestrial and marine species, carbon sinks and natural barriers against storm surges and coastal erosion. Mangroves provide invaluable services but have been declining worldwide as a result of anthropogenic and other threats.
Guardians of our Coast showcases the fascinating web of life that surrounds these tidal forests. The movie highlights the unique collaboration between governments, regional and local institutions, NGOs and local communities, in efforts to save these vulnerable ecosystems and restore them to their former glory.

India has been a part of the Mangrove for the Future (MFF) regional initiative since 2006. Our programme is guided by the National Strategy and Action Plan with primary focus on research, livelihood security, learnings for policy interventions and knowledge dissemination.
MFF India actively works with the private sector in environmentally sustainable business practices and coastal area development. In addition to continuing our work at a national level, MFF India will play a vital role in future studies/initiatives that develop our capacity to manage coastal ecosystems from a regional approach.

I grow my own mangroves at home. It is easy to do and very rewarding. I then plant them along the rivers here in Florida.

Salute to the people who have had taken efforts to increase the Mangroves and are continuing to do so. Really we are destroying the beautiful bounty of the nature..but we can cure the damage caused to Mangroves ( that means to ourselves) and we have to.. otherwise nature has its own way to teach us by drowning us and remember we dont have pneumatophores..
. Thank you Mangroves4theFuture for this documentary...!!

I'll say grassland, then wetlands, then coral reefs, then kelp forests, and then mangroves.

@@Harsimran_Singh_27 Compared to the construction of "great" walls to defend against tsunami, more mangrove forests should be allowed to flourish and create a natural protective barrier.

The problem with conservation efforts is that even looking at reality of environmental degradation is so uncomfortable as we experience while watching this video. Creating awareness thus becomes much more difficult.

What kind of mangroves can handle high salinity ,
Salinity equal to that of the sea water?
Is it possible to make large channel to direct some seawater inland and make an artificial mangrove Forest? This would be really helpful for a country like pakistan where a large parts of land near the sea are not suitable for agriculture and a very small part of the coastal area is suitable for agriculture but it is currently occupied by mangrove forests.
