@@MrDracolucassos not the same, but very similar. Edge has knife edges, Gotoh uses the baseplate, there are a few other small differences, but they are small.
I have all these trems on different guitars and can confirm the Gotoh feels the best in my hands. From the height and angle of the bar to the way the trem feels with my hand resting against it while playing. The best locking trem I own though is the orignal edge on my Ibanez RG Genesis.

The powder coating the FR noiseless springs are given chips off over time.... and way too easily I might add... especially at points of contact, rendering the powder coating nearly useless as a noise dampener. Using soft foam under the springs, or adding heat shrink tubing inside any tremolo spring (wide enough to keep contact with the inside of the springs) are easy enough and generally perform better with unwanted harmonics than a simple powder coating because they actually acoustically decouple the springs from the points of contact as opposed to just adding paint to the raw metal. the tubing is far more aesthetically pleasing than the foam but I've realized (the hard way) that no one other than guys like us gives two sticks about how aesthetically clean out trem cavities are. 🤣 Great in depth video. @@chocolaa-p2689they can. As with any component on a trem, it will depend on Your setup and how well you are able to balance the tension relationship between your strings, springs, and guitar. If you can do that, I'd say that yes, they're capable of giving any decent locking trem more flutter than standard FR springs. They have a higher tensil strength which helps them return to their zero point more consistently, and are made of alloys that give them a greater elastic limit. that elasticity is what creates the flutter effect when tension is suddenly released.
I have a licensed FR that doesn't have the blocks that lock the bridge. Instead the strings run through the bolt that usually locks that block in place. This keeps the strings from having any extreme bends. Can't find any info on it though.
I really enjoyed your video the other day. I know exactly what you're talking about, that butter. I had a Japanese RG that was amazing. I put so much into it, Fernandez sustainer, evolution bridge pick up, scalloped frets etc.. Steve Vai would've teared up for this version of his beloved FLO... I refused to play on my friends guitars with original Floyd rose tremolo's because they said it was so much better than Ibanez or Jackson. Personally I thought Ibanez was a little smoother than Jackson, personal preference maybe. But, the original floyd rose has a certain feeling which is so beautiful and smooth, exactly like you were pointing out. You're the first person who has really demonstrated the difference between the Floyd Rose versus licensed variants. I'm assuming the term "butter" was used for the feeling of the Floyd Rose in the butt rock days. A guitarist in 2015 used the same term when he was convincing me to try one for the first time. I had a license Floyd Rose in 88 and I don't know how many I've had since and here I was not even 10 years back experiencing perfection in a floating trem system for the first time... So, I went down the rabbit hole. My questions were, "Will a Floyd Rose Special do the job? Can I rebuild a junker super straight from the 80s or 90s to compare with or surpass modern day tech? What are the differences in Floyd Roses?" And the kid in me wants to put one on a headless guitar somehow without having to spend $800 on a Sophia.. OK, pulling my head out of the rabbit hole and come to a strange conclusion. The one thing truly different is the resonance block. I'm wondering if the heavier "fat brass trem block" has everything to do with that heavier balanced field versus a licensed Ibanez, Jackson etc. the "butter"
Great video. Nice to see someone geeking out on Floyds! I love the engineering that goes into them as well. I mainly play Ibanez now, so use the original Edge with the locking posts. I also think they have the best arm design with the replaceable bushes. Pretty sure they are made by Gotoh. That 1984 sure looks cool, though!
Hi I’m thinking about swapping out my special for one of these. Jackson doesn’t list what kind of but size they use on the 12-16 compound radius. Did you have any issues with new nuts being too high or diff string spacing? I really like the feel of the special it’s just crap metal so I want more solid craftsmanship.
I'm sure someone has probably pointed this out to you by now, but the GE1996T is not just a push in. You push it in, and then screw it down to the height you want, and then tighten the allen screw to adjust the tightness/floppiness of it. That's why it's sitting up so high. You did not screw it in, and then tighten the allen screw to adjust it. Then, you just unscrew it, and pull it back out, to take it back off.
Is it possible that you have a different style arm/bushing? You cannot screw something that doesn’t have threads. I think what’s happening is it’s easier to push the bar all the way down when you push and turn at the same time.
@@jed_shred_guitars There are threads inside of mine. And every other one I've ever seen. Maybe you have the wrong whammy arm for that particular tremolo? Could you have possibly mixed it up with something else? I mean, I also have a Floyd Rose, with the push in arm, and that one does not have threads. But it would definitely fit into my GOTOH. Did you read the instructions? I think that's how I found out.
@@KaosII1968 It's even that way in the PDF file. And on the GOTOH site. Every picture of it, you can plainly see the inside threaded arm. It's also in the instructions.
Today I've ordered a 40*50 Block Gotoh according to ''top seller'' title when I was away from my guitar. I've realized that 40 thing very late. I hope it fits to my Jackson Dynky.
I wish the gotoh studs weren't so freaking big and were just a direct replacement; perhaps they're more stable and less susceptible to wood expansion/contraction? Something that plagues a lot of basswood bodies is the wood drying out a lot more over time and things getting loose.
Very curious- did you leave your stock floyd posts in the V that has the Gotoh? I have seen videos make the 1996t flutter like mad. My experience mirrors yours...it doesn't flutter well...I am beginning to think that while the floyd posts are smaller and thus work, their "groove" or flange for the knife edge is just not quite right for the Gotoh.
What is your opinion of the saddles on the Gotoh? They look rounded off and smoother than any Floyd I've seen. I also like the slopung shape of the front saddle, looks strong too.
They look cool and are very comfortable. Maybe a little too futuristic for sound guitars. The saddles are much lighter that Floyd rose original, but don’t seem to be wearing any faster. It thinks of part of what makes the Gotoh so precise rather than smooth like the Floyd.
One has a block so you can't go wah wah, ones chrome one is steel as long as I can blue steel both of which I have on the gotoh. The gotoh you can beat someone in the head with if you angle it right, its really dense, and some of the parts protrude. The Floyd kinda sucks on stock, production model guitars.... we will see how it is on a custom build. They make multiple versions of them.
The edge/gotoh locking studs are superior design its too bad they arent smaller. And the gotoh/edge having one straight knife edge is also way better because the studs can't be lined up 100% perfect all the time. I like the push in arm. I need a new trem for my mike shannon soloist, I'm thinking about the 1984 but you said it needs shimmed?
Just installed it, you take the stock shim out and its good. Tuning stability is still an issue although it ia better than the factory OFR. The big block would not fit in my top mount :( Should've went with the gotoh
So I bought an OG Floyd for my battered MH1000 and was wondering if the 1984 was better. Have had horrible issues with the fine tuners being loose for years on the Floyd I got and I bought two this year with no issues. Just wanted to hear your insight if I should go with the 84 and if you have heard of fine tuners coming loose. Your videos are awesome and its great to hear someone who is so honest with enthusiasm
@@jed_shred_guitarsI'm wondering, do you have any "play" when using the Floyd arm on the 1984? I have one and wish I knew how to make it tight like you can with the newer screw on arms...
Great video. I would also just like to add that the Ibanez Edge intonation tool will also work for the Gotoh because the fine tuners are at a 45 angle...just like the Edge. For the money, you can't beat the Gotoh.
I know what you mean on slop and some play on the arm. An easy fix , is to place a small spring from a fountain pen . Cut it to the desired length and drop it into the trem cavity and presto.
Would you say a floyd rose 1000 is pretty reliable when setup properly with stainless steel string block bolts and nut screws? I'm getting a ESP LTD SD2 and sammy duet said to upgrade the string blocks and maybe see about a "trem-o-bite" I'm not sure if that's what it's called or not just curious about the Floyd rose 1000 reliabl
I've had a couple of these for many years, one 6 string one on a BC Rich, and a 7 string one on a Schecter. All I can tell you is that in my experience they are fine, although the arm tends to wobble (not a problem if you don't like the bar "tight", but I do), and the hex screws are shit, so I've replaced mine with better quality ones (Schaller) and a new trem arm (also made by Schaller). The upgrades are fairly cheap, so it's not a problem, I've found. the big things with these is they actually have proper steel saddles, and a brass block as standard, unlike the crappy "Special"!!! No cracking or splitting saddles to worry about!! They aren't as good as the Original Floyd (which is ridiculously priced now) or the Schaller Lockmeister (Floyd killer, they are as good if not better than an OFR)!). I don't go crazy with the bar, and I have a light touch, so maybe if you are a heavy user and abuse it you might have a problem, but the one in my BC Rich is very good quality, and even the black coating is still intact after more than a decade.🤔😁
Sounds awesome, I'm probably gonna look at a Shaller or Gotoh' tremolo but before I do that I'd upgrade the tuners first, yeah my second licensed floyd rose has been through ALOT, however it has kept up but it does have a lot of wear on it, but as for reliable, it is. Sorta. But there's a company coming around for new FR style tremolos and Brandon ellis from black dahlia murder uses them I can't quite remember the name but I think they're from Turkey they look EXTREMELY FANCY almost like you wouldn't want to touch it. 😂
Curious how your FR 1000 has held up? I got one on a new LTD black metal and it was immediately failing to return to pitch. One of the posts was leaning slightly so I think that’s probably the reason, but when I removed the trem the posts and knife edges already had visible wear on them. Might have just been paint scraping off but not good either way imo. Anyway I sent that one back and now waiting for an E-II with an OFR. Hesitant to buy another guitar with an FR 1000 after that experience.
Thanks for this, it helped me narrow down my options a lot. Any opinion on the Schaller Lockmeister? Also, why are the current Original Floyds not as good as the 1984?
You can bend the arm on the 84. heat it up first. I have a wooden block with a hole drilled for this, tightly screwed in a vice and it works for me. FWIW. I like my arms low at the bridge but at a bigger angle.
The Gotoh is the best design, they've taken the concept and run with it. To my mind it's better than any of the trems they make for Ibanez. The stud lock and the screw in arm with the allen screw to tighten it, is a better design as well. I like the Lockmeister that Schaller make, over the 1984, and definitely the 1000, because it's every bit as good as a Floyd, better made, with quality steel and hardened allen bolts as well, but at about half the price. It's a direct replacement for any OFR as well, whereas the Gotoh usually needs modifications to the guitar.
And have the screw inside the posts to lock the heaight adjustment screw down..the Gotoh height screws have coarse threads and the Floyd Roses have much finer threads.@@jed_shred_guitars
People say if you don't change the studs for the Gotoh and leave the FR in you guitar it will go out of tune. I guess those massive studs are designed for the Gotoh and they shoul go together if you want the best out of the bridge. I just ordered a Gotoh 1996 and I;m gonna try wit the FR studs before drilling the guitar. It's irreversibel and I kinda non't like the idea.
I'm a fan of Gotohs, but I disagree on the fine tuners. The range is shorter. For most it will be perfectly fine. In my case I set the low E close to flush this way I can fine tune back to drop D. However, the fine tuners are was smoother than my OFR 1984 and my Schaller ones.
El.titulo del video deberia llamarse como quitarle la originalidad a una jackson RR24 rhoads venia super bien equipada de fabrica pero bueno nada que hacer
My experience with the Gotoh: If you can't or do not want to drill for the gotoh inserts and posts, then do not waste your time or money. The Floyd posts will not work with the gotoh. The bridge knife edge will slide around on the treble side post and will be wildly out of pitch. Pay twice the money and get a Schaller or OFR instead. Gotoh on Floyd posts is a trash setup. I wasted my time and money on this shit and will need to swap the Gotoh out. I'm pretty annoyed.
Nope. The FR Original is a high quality bridge, but it's overpriced in comparison to the Schaller Lockmeister and Gotoh GE1996T. I have experience with them all and the Ibanez specific designs. The Lockmeister pretty much is the FR, just direct from Schaller. The Gotoh has beautifully bevelled saddle edges and there's no reason why the Japanese cannot match the metallurgy of the Germans.
Korean 1000 series would not feel the same as OFR cause its saddles made of shitty soft Zinc Alloy . Which wears out in a year or so. The best ones are : Schaller Lockmeister , OFR, Gotoh.
The 1000 has all steel and brass construction. It's the Special that has the dog shit zinc alloy saddles that wear and cause problems in short order. The 1000 series is claimed to match the specs of the Schaller made FR Original, but reports seem to indicate patchy tuning stability, with some units being fine and others not. This could be down to some batches having inaccurately machined knife edges or lack of adequate material hardening.
@@ivanyokhna Interesting... The 1000/1500 is supposed to share the same specs as the Schaller made FR Original. There's one way to be sure and that's checking if a strong magnet will stick to the saddles. The Schaller FR and Lockmeister are all steel except for the spring block and will attract a magnet. I've tested the Lockmeister and can confirm that a magnet will pull against the whole saddle and baseplate. I don't have anything with a 1000 to rest.
The 84 is an original floyd with brass fine tuners, brass block, old-style wood screw studs and old style arm. It's not a different product. Same quality as the original. The 1000 SUCKS (for me). Good tremolo but not great. The gotoh is awesome! i think only the saddles are hardened steel not the baseplate
They don’t advertise it, but if you get a current production ofr and 84 in your hands you’ll see what I mean. When I say current production ofr I mean ones that come on current production guitars (ofr, not 1000 series). Maybe the retail ones are as good as the 84.
Only one company makes floyd rose. That is floyd rose. The others are locking tremolo systems. Floyd rose is the name of the company not the name of the system. Everyone gets that wrong. They can be licensed by floyd rose. But it still is not a floyd rose. And make no mistake the actual floyd rose is the best hands down. Although Ibanez makes a great locking trem system. No need to upgrade it.
Floyd Rose doesn't make its own bridges. Production is entirely outsourced, so you cannot argue that only one company makes a Floyd Rose as there are several hardware companies that are contracted to manufacture bridges and locking nuts on behalf of the Floyd Rose company. And since the patents ran out some years ago, there is no longer any need to licence the locking saddle design.
@pauln6803 only a floyd rose is a floyd rose. A Kahler is a kahler not a floyd rose. It is the name of the company not just the product. Just like a band aid. That is actually the company name. Not the product. And where a company has their products made does not mean other companies become them. Many companies have their products made in Korea or China. It is still that company. Now there is licensed Floyd roses. Meaning they have the right to make their own from thier design. But it is still not a floyd rose. They are lock nut floating bridges. And Floyd rose made the first one. But no that does not make every company that makes a lock nut floating tremolo a floyd rose.
I have a lot of experience with FR original and FR licensed bridges. In my opinion, the Gotoh is a little better than the original FR, and blows the 1000 out of the water. The palm comfort and attention to detail on the Gotoh is just better, stability seems identical to the FR original, but the machining and plating are just a little better (plus you can get two Gotoh's for the price of an original FR).
I really don't care if it flutters. It's not something that adds any musical value to anything, in my opinion. I have my GOTOH set up with enough tension that it doesn't flutter, on purpose.

Can't find any info on it though.
what's your opinion on the Jackson guitars made in Indonesia? The X series SLX DX?
Yes. Edge Trema are made by Gotoh. I myself prefer the Original Edge and Gotoh mostly because the saddles feel more comfortable.
That is one hell of a beautiful Jackson! The orange! What is it?
@@jed_shred_guitars
There are threads inside of mine.
@@SloppyGoat
Yup...all mine have internal threads. That is why there is a screw on the bottom of the trem arm holder.
@@KaosII1968
It's even that way in the PDF file. And on the GOTOH site. Every picture of it, you can plainly see the inside threaded arm. It's also in the instructions.
Can you interchange a block from the Gotoh onto a 1984? Do the base plate mounting hole match up?
Today I've ordered a 40*50 Block Gotoh according to ''top seller'' title when I was away from my guitar. I've realized that 40 thing very late. I hope it fits to my Jackson Dynky.
I wish the gotoh studs weren't so freaking big and were just a direct replacement; perhaps they're more stable and less susceptible to wood expansion/contraction? Something that plagues a lot of basswood bodies is the wood drying out a lot more over time and things getting loose.
Seriously. Such a genius design
Totally agree!! I bought the gotoh and had to buy the Floyd studs seperate
Nice Epiphone Beast in the background. Got one in black 😊
Did you have to install the Gotoh Bridge Posts? Or is the Gotoh on the Floyd Bridge Posts?
Very curious- did you leave your stock floyd posts in the V that has the Gotoh? I have seen videos make the 1996t flutter like mad. My experience mirrors yours...it doesn't flutter well...I am beginning to think that while the floyd posts are smaller and thus work, their "groove" or flange for the knife edge is just not quite right for the Gotoh.
I haven't bought a FR guitar in over a decade, thanks for the vid.
The big block would not fit in my top mount :(
Should've went with the gotoh
Very cool. The prices on the 1984 trems are crazy right now. The Gotoh one looks great. BTW is that a grow tent behind you?
What tuning and gauge are you using and how many springs did you need?
LoL. Came here to check up Gotoh, met a fellow grower XD
Thanks man! I haven’t heard anything bad about 1984’s. The fine tuners on mine do have a little bit of slop.
My 1984 has loose find tuners.
Awesome! Great review and explanation
Thanks for this, it helped me narrow down my options a lot. Any opinion on the Schaller Lockmeister? Also, why are the current Original Floyds not as good as the 1984?
Great video. How about the Schaller made in Germany?
How can the stiffer Gotoh be thmore articulate? I dont gettit.
You can bend the arm on the 84. heat it up first. I have a wooden block with a hole drilled for this, tightly screwed in a vice and it works for me. FWIW. I like my arms low at the bridge but at a bigger angle.
Sand the wood underneath the nut, not the nut itself!
nice Jackson!
Im curious to see if the Gotoh will flutter more with a bigger block, seems to be the only difference between the two
You know you can screw in the gotoh tremolo arm. It has a screw on the inside that lets you adjust the height of the arm
Did you swap the posts when installing the Gotoh? Nice vid
No, the Gotoh ones are huge but really nice. Most fully recessed Floyd’s won’t accept the Gotoh studs
And have the screw inside the posts to lock the heaight adjustment screw down..the Gotoh height screws have coarse threads and the Floyd Roses have much finer threads.@@jed_shred_guitars
Put some graphite on the screw on type. It will swing but you can tighten it to where there is no play.
Nice grow tent
Schaller Lockmeister with radiused saddles and radiused nut with thicker baseplate is supreme to them all, imho!
I’ve installed a few gotohs with the fr studs and never had an issue. I don’t see how there could possibly be an issue mechanically.
Opinion on kahler?
I wish there were more of them out there.
Great shit
Thank you
The Gotoh GE1996T costs half of what the Floyd Rose Original does
It's an absolute steal for the price .
I still think the ibanez zero edge with the zps was the best tremolo system ever.
A little more volume...a heap more gain...Bill and Ted will pop up in the video!
Are you growing weed? I see that tent :)
I have a little flower garden 😂
Edge and Lo Pro Edge. Those are the best.
Well, since the original Floyd is constantly out of stock, my choice has been kinda made for me.
Ibanez Edge from the higher end stuff. Satch Vai Herman Li etc

16:03 you said deez nuts
10:57 what? 😂😂😂
Original Floyd or Schaller every time. !!!!!!!!!!
The type and amount of flutter is all in the springs you use....has nothing to do with the bridge.
Sophia trems do locking posts
i think the original is milled and the 1000 is stamped
No, both are cast then the knife edges are machined.
The Best Floyd ibanez Zero
El.titulo del video deberia llamarse como quitarle la originalidad a una jackson RR24 rhoads venia super bien equipada de fabrica pero bueno nada que hacer
Getting total Ted Logan vibes 😉
The best fulcrum is the Kahler Steeler Pro. They're coming out by Christmas 2023
if they're coming out soon, how do you know they're the best?
My experience with the Gotoh: If you can't or do not want to drill for the gotoh inserts and posts, then do not waste your time or money. The Floyd posts will not work with the gotoh. The bridge knife edge will slide around on the treble side post and will be wildly out of pitch. Pay twice the money and get a Schaller or OFR instead. Gotoh on Floyd posts is a trash setup. I wasted my time and money on this shit and will need to swap the Gotoh out. I'm pretty annoyed.
Call me biased. But, anything made in Germany is gonna be superior. The original is the only one to go for.

I like the Sophia idea but you have to have a Math degree to figure it out.
@@pauln6803 The catalogue of my guitar Venom Dean Zelinsky ( made in China) shows that FR is 1000 series.
@@ivanyokhna
Interesting...
@@pauln6803 Saddles failed the magnet test, its 100% Zinc Alloy

Unless it's labelled as a Special, someone has done something sneaky.
Did you buy the guitar new?
none of those , i prefer fu tone floyd and sophia 2.92 +
Schaller Lockmeister is better than both.
😊
The 84 is an original floyd with brass fine tuners, brass block, old-style wood screw studs and old style arm. It's not a different product. Same quality as the original. The 1000 SUCKS (for me). Good tremolo but not great. The gotoh is awesome! i think only the saddles are hardened steel not the baseplate
They don’t advertise it, but if you get a current production ofr and 84 in your hands you’ll see what I mean. When I say current production ofr I mean ones that come on current production guitars (ofr, not 1000 series). Maybe the retail ones are as good as the 84.
@@jed_shred_guitars got 2x OFR (german made) and brand new 1000... OFR sniffs them (1000) for breakfast. However it works but not good as OFR.
@@jed_shred_guitarscan you be more specific about what’s wrong with the OEM originals?
Clueless, full of wrong information.
My only concern is tuning stability. Is the gotoh on par with floydrose originals???
I have a lot of experience with FR original and FR licensed bridges. In my opinion, the Gotoh is a little better than the original FR, and blows the 1000 out of the water. The palm comfort and attention to detail on the Gotoh is just better, stability seems identical to the FR original, but the machining and plating are just a little better (plus you can get two Gotoh's for the price of an original FR).
I really don't care if it flutters. It's not something that adds any musical value to anything, in my opinion. I have my GOTOH set up with enough tension that it doesn't flutter, on purpose.
