We FINALLY get the chance to wheel with a Jeep Gladiator! And on The Rubicon Trail no less! So while we knock out another Badge of Honor trail, we figured we'd see how the all new JT Truck (belonging to Wizzard005) holds up against our Jeep Wrangler JLU Rubicon!

Brittany, you could totally start a school on how to be a spotter for a Jeep team. You have a great eye and know which line you have to run. You and Kevin make a great team. Keep doing what your doing!

I have gladiator ecodiesel and trust me if you build them rt there is practically no place it can't go. Plus it hauls more gear to make a happy wife and trips more pleasurable

Seeing those CJ's gave me chills since I ran the Rubicon in a CJ about 20 years ago. Regarding dogs on trail runs, I have seen one dog run over and killed when it ran in front of a jeep climbing a hill and another dog get a snout full of porcupine needles during another trail run. Be careful out there, and try to keep your dog close when those big jeeps are bumping around.
I have a 1947 CJ-2A and a 2017 JKU Recon edition. I can tell you, it is a completely different driving experience in a flat fender CJ2 over the JKU. You have to pay attention A LOT more.

The point you said was "Gatekeeper" at 9:30 is not Gatekeeper. That climb is called "Whale Bones". Gatekeeper ends before the Bowl where you took your photo op.
It’s what several of the people around the obstacle claimed it to be. Since they were from the area, we went with it. 😊
@@LiteBrite In 2020, RTF is planning on doing a video that stops at the "Named" obstacles and give a history of how places like Whale Bones, Nobie's Rock, Walker Hill, Benchmark (where Kevin did it twice, before Soup Bowl), etc got their name. Unfortunately, our main trail historian Steve Morris passed away in July at Jeepers Jamboree. The top of Cadillac Hill is called Morris Rock, after him. Sadly, all the OG's are dying.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is of of the western part of Wentworth Springs Road several miles west of Ice House Road. What you really wanted to say is the second entrance to the trail is on Wentworth Springs Road north of where Ice House Road turns off.
You are right she did get it wrong but this is only the second time they ever been on the trail
We spent time in Uncle Toms Cabin right before we entered the trail last time around, so that was our reference point.
Exactly Sam....Same with Top Gear suggesting there was a "short cut" from Uncle Tom's to the Kiosk, when no such route exists. Wentworth Springs, for those reading is the original entrance to the trail, and there are actually 2 entrances on that side, WWS Road and Airport Flat. These 2 merge shortly before the start of 14N05 to McKinstry Lake. The Loon Lake entrance, is relatively new, when the County got an easement sometime in the 1970's. The Loon entrance is now the most common entry point, but WWS road still exists and is quite challenging in spots, especially Lost Sluice or Forgotten Sluice that almost nobody has done in the last 2 decades, but it's there. Post Pile is very difficult, but there is a bypass. WWS and Loon merge together at the "Intertie". RTF Placed a granite marker there, it can been seen in the background at 16:35.

We love doing the Rubicon trail as we take 6 to 7 new peeps up there each year. I also must say keep out jeeping and out videoing Wayalife as that is really the way to really get into his back pocket if you know what I mean. great video thank you for sharing

You guys should check out Wayalife and their hitch stinger. It looks like it helps keep their tire from hanging up and getting the tailgate bashed

As a 'Burban owner, I really appreciate that Jeep keeps bringing out longer and longer vehicles. It's nice getting a break from being told how bad my break-over is.

It's great to hear a PSA about the Bears! I had a bag of food stolen out of my Jeep on the Rubicon this summer. We hit the trail when there was essentially no one else on it, so that could have been why my rig was targeted. It was also cool to see my friend's Tacoma in your video going up Soup Bowl!
37s the new 35s and 40s the new 37s. Crazy what's happened with the JL.

It's pretty wild when you think about it, dudes were wheeling hard on 31s and 33s back in the 80s and now you have rubicons coming with 33s stock and everyone ditching those in the first few weeks of owning them. just imagine the monster trucks of the future lmao.
Great video. More steering issues though. The Rubicon will expose any weak point your rig has .

I really like the Gladiator, but I would absolutely still get a Wrangler first. As it stands now, I cannot afford either one, but I would definitely buy both were money not a problem.
Dang, @ 22:05 that was a lot of windup on that one front axle, almost an axle breaker.
Those 40's sure need a lot of torque to lift that heavy HEMI.
On a sidenote, @ 5:58 you really see the difference on where the rubber meet the road on those tries, and why the Patagonia's are so quiet on the pavement. 😁

Gatekeeper can be seen at the 3:20 mark. It used to be a narrow S passage with two big rocks on either side that would eat your rockers. Looks like the JL did great with the upgrades. Looks too easy. Next time try to find the Old Sluice entrance at mile marker 4.2. It's a bit more challenging. I always enjoy watching your videos.
Jeff Y the old sluice entrance has been amped up, because someone put a big rock right in the middle of the entrance, so the right turn down is a lot tighter than it could be.
We did old sluice the first time we did the Rubicon Trail (you can watch the videos from last September!) 😊
They were not wanting to run it do to a lot of the rigs within the group not being built enough to tackle that section. 🤙🏼

Id have to say this is probably one of my favorite videos. It clearly shows the different capabilities of all the rigs from tire size to wheel base and how choice of line can affect outcome. Good job

I feel like the Gladiator is an amazing overlander, but not the best rock crawler due to the breakover angle. The JL is a beast crawler and the JLU is the do everything Jeep.
I want one to overland! It's a perfect rig for it

The JT is still amazing as it is probably one of the most capable overlander trucks. Most Tacomas couldn’t do half the stuff a gladiator can do on the rocks. But I agree the JLU is the do everything jeep.
@@spencereyes235 Yeah, trying to overland in a 2 door is pretty rough but it's doable. You just have to have a hiker's mentality when it comes to gear if you plan on going by yourself or with other 2 doors. I personally always camp with other people that have tacos, 4runners and unlimiteds so I buy them gas so they carry some of my stuff for me lol.

I think that they need to shorten that overhang on the Gladiator to get better departure angle. With the lift, the Breakover doesn't seem to be that bad.
You are so true about bears. Thanks for the information about perfumes. I didn't know bears were attracted to perfumes. Well I knew if it's a fruity perfume.
Given the wheelbase and rear overhang, the Gladiator did better then I'd expect it to do on 37's! Britney's becoming a world-class spotter on these trails - it IS "all about the line"

Nice to see the Gladiator take on all the obstacles that the JL's did. I think with a little more lift and 40's, the Gladiator would've made it over everything. I have a Gladiator Rubicon in FL. Wish we had trails like you have!

They definitely can. But they’ll also typically take the path of least resistance (ie a vehicle without doors vs a vehicle with doors)

this is our next upgrade, we have the lift , just saving for axles and the rest that goes with it...
Step child is on 3.5 and 40s but I do agree a gladiator on that build would rock.
@@likepaperinafire ours would have 40's on it, but this type of wheeling i would snap an axel or two, so we are in saving mode! Soon tho....

Love it. I like seeing how the Gladiator is doing w people’s mods. Def pushing me to go w the JLU when I change vehicles. However glad to see what the Gladiator can do.
Also if no one mentioned it for one of your last vids, the pump your own gas thing in Oregon is for job creation. I personally never liked it as I think it’s a little weird, but if it does good for society then I think it’s a good thing.

It's not that the gatekeeper has gotten easier over the years, it's the fact that jeeps have become more capable over the years. Big lift, big tires, etc. Run it in a stock flat fender Willys and see how easy it is.

I was just wondering how come you guys don't put a stinger on the back of your Jeep to protect the spare tire it just hooks into your rear hitch receiver ?

SirWolfattude - if you look at the dark blue JK on 40s, I made a 2”x2” square tube that I notched and bent, then played and welded to protect mine since it is also gate hinge mounted, but I know the JLs like Kevin and Brittany’s have a better hinge setup from factory then the JKs, I’m running an upgraded mount, but still wanted to protect the gate from being pealed off of the tire caught on a rock on an extreme uphill obstacle. 😁🤙🏼
@@dogsadventures232 yeah the reason I was asking was because a lot of times when the back of the Jeep is going down Britney is telling Kevin to be careful of the rear tire so I figured with a stinger they wouldn't have to worry about hitting the spare tire 👍

Little Sluice has been a boulder field since I started going through it in 1979 on 31's. You just bypassed an iconic portion of the trail.
It’s not really much of anything now. What used to be boulders are pretty small chunks of rock now. We did Little Sluice last time, which is why we chose to experience the other route this time.
atvobsession the only stock rig with us ended up going little sluice. Completely Stock JLUR and he had no trouble at all. Just drove through it with no spotter or anything. It use to be much worse. The blasted it about 10 years ago to make it a lot easier.
@@LiteBrite I totally get you're talking live and don't live here to understand the history. The rocks were air cracked (not blasted) Oct 2, 2012. Since 2013, Jeepers Jamboree has gone through Little Sluice. But in 2018-2019, the rocks moved around and it is quite different, JJ bypassed the Little Sluice due to difficulty. I just wanted to make sure your users know, the Little Sluice is not an easy route. It requires skill and vehicle capable. If you'd like to read about the trail history, visit the Rubicon Trail Foundation website as we keep this up to date. There's maps and a lot of information for users that have never visited the trail. Feel free to email me I'm the Vice President of RTF.
@@boughtnotbuiltoffroad7784 It wasn't blasted. It was air cracked. 5 rocks were cracked by air on Oct 2, 2012. The County needed to reduce human presence around Little Sluice and oil mitigation to get the CAO removed. This was accomplished with 5 rock's crack and a helicopter rock drop. The CAO was successfully removed by the water board in 2014. The LS has gotten more difficult in 2019, this is why Jeepers Jamboree made the decision to bypass Little Sluice in 2019. The trail changes all the time.

I've been through the Rubicon hundreds of times. The first time I took my GF, she kept asking...What's that noise? What's that noise? I finally said...Honey, I know all the noises. When I hear one that's new, you'll be the first to know.

I was hiking in the woods and sat down on a rock for a while. I heard a rustling in the trees behind me. A big old bear came slowly down the hill behind me, past me and continued on his way. I just sat there still as I could be. He was not interested in me, just went on his way.
You need an assortment of hydraulic compression fittings. Forget about flare tools.

Really wanted to meet up with you guys before you guys headed out, just wasn't able to make it work (Maybe next time). But yeah, bears ARE around, and they try to get into cars. I have had a few run ins with them. Run across Mountain Lions too, but they typically stay away from people.
Not a fair comparison vs stepchild(40's/4.5 inch lift), should be 37's/4 inch lift vs Gladiator on the Rubicon Trail. 1.5 +.5 = 2 more clearance significant, in addition to a longer tire contact patch.
C7 GT1 we only have 3.5” of lift. The taller springs were to compensate for the weight so we’re at a stock JL 3.5” lift height. And the comparison is for run what you have. It’s literally just a trail and having fun. No need to get so technical
my opinion is a JT doesnt stand a chance on a trail like this or similar ones to this without a minimum of 42-44s, or take most of the bypasses. They need to chop about 4 feet off the ass!

well, I'm a spoilsport but I think not only are the glads overpriced but they're too long for offroad.
The Rubicon is on my bucket list to do. I have an 08 jku what is the bare minimum I should do to jeep to accomplish without a lot of difficulty.

3" lift and 35's w/ an automatic trans. Rocker protection and a winch. And some friends in case there is an issue.
@@samwalker3441 what about skid plates or is there bypasses and stuff mines a Sahara so I dont have lockers yet
@@shack200351 there are some bypasses. But, truthfully, except for the long bypass at Little Sluice and using the Indian Trail instead of going through Old Sluice, the bypasses are a handful for a JK on 35's with lockers. Also, if you have a Sahara, an automatic trans would be all but mandatory. Your 2.72 t-case and stock gears are going make you high geared for the trail. Yes, you need full skid plates. You really should have lockers. You have an '08. The auto transmissions are known to run hot. You may want to make sure that you have an external trans cooler, also.
If you come, you will want to be light on the throttle. Your Dana 30 front end could be suspect w/ 35's or bigger if you try to spin on obstacles.

@@shack200351 No problem. My view is one that is conservative in vehicle abuse and damage. Others may have a less conservative view when it comes to vehicle performance and damage. I have seen people do the trail w/ ill or lightly prepared vehicles and I have seen the results at the end of the trail. They are sometimes not pretty. I just don't want you to come in out gunned right from the start. Good luck.
