Fun Fact: I put in that "OMG IT'S BEYONCE!" line because I realized not putting in the King Shark video I made a while ago was a mistake, so I'm making up for a missed opportunity. 👍
This season hit so hard because of Ivy’s storyline! While it is not official yet- I do think this lesson is the direction that Good Omens is also taking with its two characters- one wanting to change Heaven from the inside and the other seeing the entire system as hopeless.

I was a lot more mixed on Season 4 of Harley Quinn than the first three seasons, but you're not wrong that the Harley and Ivy stuff worked well. It did frustrate me a bit at points at how dumb Ivy seemed to be acting at points, in a "can't she see that she's being taken for a ride?" sense, but yeah, getting praise and a bit of power and respect for the first time in a long time really can pull the wool over your eyes. Its really the vast majority of the stuff outside of Harley and Ivy that dragged the season down. Like, I love this version of Bane, I really do, but he had so much screentime this season that had nothing to do with anything at all (not to mention ignoring the Valentine's special outright, I guess >_< ).
Apparently they didn't take into account the events of the Valentine's Day special because the showrunner in Season 4 didn't get to work on it, so she didn't know what happened in it until it aired.
I'm hoping next season is the last, not because I disliked the concepts of this season, but because the episode to episode shenanigans feel unfocused and trying too hard to do too many things. There are a lot of good interpretations of these characters on this show and as a result they sometimes seem to step on each other's toes and distract from the larger arcs. I think the next season has a good opportunity to wrap things up with a back to basics story about saying fuck you to Gotham's shitty rules and finding comradery in the people who refuse to operate within the system.
Do Harley's vid~ I loved this season, it felt short, but i loved what they did with Ivy's story. It was a bit cathartic, and fun with what was going on with Harles~ cant wait to see thr sirens next!
Speaking of Talia, I hope you or someone else makes a video on how she's gone from neutral leaning on heroic over time to outright villainous and how this coincided with white villains becoming less evil over time. As well as DC's issues regarding the Dragon Lady/Asian Babymama trope.
Just as Lex was using Ivy to further his goals, Thalia(who Bruce should've never let her have any sway in Wayne Enterprises and any access to the BatTech) was using both Lex and Ivy as decoys while she furthered her own goals.
In Kill la Kill there is a scene between two of the villains when they are children in a sandbox one has built a detailed castle the other has built an actual building by taking and refining the sand into metal, it isn't exactly a one for one comparison between the two scenarios however to me both end up showing that a better system could be built by destroying and refining rather than building with the material available
Excellent, excellent video. I'd love to see more about this show, in general, but I've got a bit of a craving: a discussion of Poison Ivy's canonical queerness, the time it came about, and the lessons about representation - positive and negative - that can be taken from it. I was genuinely startled when Harley and Ivy's relationship in the show became an actual romantic partnership (I don't know if I'll ever recover from the way 2000s bisexual representation in media impacted my expectations), and was wondering about your take on how it compares to their relationship in the actual comics.
I haven't read how it happens in the comics, but learning they were going to be together when it was first announced was IMMEDIATELY refreshing as someone who never drank the "Joker and Harley are goals" Kool-Aid! Definitely wouldn't mind doing something comparing how their relationship is between the comics and the show one of these days!
Thank you Readus, for a mindful dig into the perils of reform-chasing in institutionalism. I followed along, and I agree that this particular season of the show was conveying an important message. I only needed to pause for a while at the reproduction of the "male trees v. female trees" myth. It bums me out severely how people know absolutely nothing about how plants work.
I wasnt a huge fan of this season, though I did find it entertaining. I will admit that it felt less like a Harley Quinn show and felt more like a Poison Ivy show- its a direction I liked. I've always thought her motives were 👀 justifiable 👉👈 So I really like getting more of her, and I hope if we get anither season we'll get to continue having more storylines surrounding her like this
From season 1 I’ve commonly called this “The Poison Ivy and King Shark Show” because that’s how actively anchored my interests in it are (could do with less Culco shrieking). So while I’d say “could use more King Shark”, I could also say that about every season… and meanwhile I’d regard Clayface as the part of the show I find most tedious (and that’s saying something, when we had Jason Alexander’s character) so… yeah. Net positive shift for cast screentime for me, I think? The bit I found most disappointing is that Bruce going to jail seemed like it just sort of collected dust in the corner, when that had strong comedic and thematic legs. I was excited to see if Bruce would try doing something insane like try to break out of then back into prison nightly, or commission the construction of a bat robot, or if he’d learn something from his incarceration… but nope, he’s largely just offscreen until he decides he’s done letting the rules apply to him… which is a waste of the concept since “I choose to go to jail because the rich can’t be seen as above the law” is a thing I could see the non-comedic core-canon Wayne committing to (also: kinda easy to believe he could get busted for tax evasion… surely the amount of undeclared assets is enormous, with Batplanes and Batboats and Batputers and so on) I wanted something clever and subversive yet insightful out of this, like we got in the prior season with reformed woke socialistic mayor soccer dad Joker… instead it feels like this season bailed on both those ideas.
I had an issue with Joker just suddenly becoming a villain again too. They barely did anything with that plot point before they got bored and went back to status quo. And yes, Bruce got out too easy and barely did anything fun.
This was my favorite season yet, mostly because of the Ivy and Lex plotline. The decision to relegate most of the secondary cast to tertiary roles was bold and a little sad, but necessary as to not stifle the natural progression of the narrative. This season showed me the potential for this show to grow and evolve when needed and I can't wait for the new season
There are lots of things I liked about season 4, but something about the structure and/or the pacing felt really off compared to previous seasons. Because of this, it _might_ be my least favorite of the seasons so far, but I still enjoyed it overall. I'm excited for season 5!
This season had some pretty good ideas like Harley and Ivy taking different paths and Ivy's storyline, but something about the execution bothered me. It felt less funny and some of the characters and jokes were irritating instead of funny. Also, kind of petty, but Ivy should've kept her costume from the season 3 finale.
I am so happy to see you cover this!!! Welcome back 🥹 I’d like to watch the season again after your thoughts , I watched as it aired and probs missed a few things. Yes! Please explore Harley’s season 4 arc!!! I need all the help I can get to process the passing of (REDACTED), who just so happens to be my favorite character in the entire DC universe….🥺😭🤧
Great video. It's my first one from you thanks to fd signifier. Season four's weak spot for me was their relationship. They were so distance and living so independent. I don't think their situations would have gotten to where they were if their relationship was like it was previously. It almost felt like the writers sprinkled in the relationship because they were too focused on their individual storylines. I kept saying 'why are they acting like this to each ?' it didn't make for their personalities. Idk I hope that makes sense. Can't wait to watch other videos from you .
Great video. I personally thought Season 4 was terrible. It had great ideas, but most of them were poorly executed because of sloppy writing. And I feel that the show has lost its satirical edge in favor of trying too hard to be like every other raunchy mean-spirited adult comedy. But, this video did get me to realize how great the concept of Ivy's story was.
I want the harley video! I didn't really like the jokes this season. I though poison ivy already knew this lesson so it felt unnecessary. Also screw the media team. they sucked.
@@lordsxman Very few things for me worked in Season 4. The humor felt off, the pacing was bad, the plot felt meandering, and while there were interesting ideas at play, the execution of most of them were poor. More power to you if you liked it. I kinda hated it.
Harley's arch in another video? Yes please. Spoilers for Loki S2: You know, Loki's second season has a similar "learn that the system is set up to disallow change" arch when he finds out that the Loom that he was trying to fix to accommodate everyone was always set up to kill such attempts. He ends up destroying the loom and creating something new in the hope that everyone can do better. I quite liked the final season.
People tend to forget that Ivy is not insane. Ivy has always valued fairness. Unfortunately, society has conditioned us to believe that institutions when "wielded by the right people", will lead to the best outcomes for the most amount of people. I think she thought the tools in the existing structure being in place would accelerate her goals being met. I believe Ivy was eager for justice and went with what she thought would get her there fastest. I'm probably wrong. I'm not as familiar with her comic book iteration as I'd like to be.
Season 4 is good because it has a lack of Clayface especially. I resent that character and I feel the story could’ve had so many better ways to show every piece of his character somewhere else.
I skipped Season 4 because I found the transition from HBO Max to Max just terrible. But that did mean missing Harley Quinn. My question, whatever happened to the plot line where The Joker is a socialist running Gotham City as mayor? Did they ever do anything with that? I grew up in a city that had three socialist mayors so I wanted to see how they handled that in the show.
He’s doing fairly well as mayor, as I can recall, though the mundanity has caused him to backslide into doing villainy again. I’m interested to see how that goes next season, especially with his family showing enthusiasm for it
