    It baffles me that they don't even know, or choose not to tell how many times the victim was shot. Here in Finland, we know the exact amount of bullets anyone in the whole police force fires each year, and every time a firearm is used the reason and justification of that use is thoroughly investigated. The US is a strange country.

      I live in South Bend, Indiana, in the US. Most people know my city as the home of Notre Dame. I agree. There is a ton of racism in this country, and the amount of bullets every single police officer fires each year and the reasons should be thoroughly documented. Sadly, it isn't, and families like Michael Brown's don't get closure and know that their son was killed because of the pigmentation of the largest organ of their body. The United States of America is a very disturbing country.

    Bro, "Not pointing a gun at someone unless you intend to shoot them" and "always treat a gun like it's loaded" isn't even just a military thing. It's like... The #1 rules of gun safety... and also common sense. My dad drilled that into me so much as a kid that now I feel extremely uncomfortable walking past the barrel of a gun, even if I know for a fact it is unloaded. The fact that I, a 16 year old girl, have a better grasp on gun safety than some of these police officers is astounding. (My dad who taught me that is coincidentally a retired police officer)

    • @oddtail_tiger
      @oddtail_tiger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      "common sense" is right. I know the basic rules of gun safety, and I've never owned or held a gun.
      Heck, I don't remember the last time I *saw* a gun. They're pretty damn rare around here.
      If someone doesn't know not to point a gun at people and always treat it like it's loaded, that's not just improper training. That's being completely detached from reality.

    10:42 "If you are a cop in the United States, you should dress for the job you have, not the job you want." That is so spot on, and it really gets to the heart of this issue more than most people realize.
    Tons of cops are given free tactical gear and weapons and they suddenly think they're comparable to special forces. You can easily tell by the amount of unnecessary gear they wear just for the "tacticool" factor (for example: carrying enough magazines for an 8 hour firefight, flex-cuffs for detaining prisoners, sensitive site exploitation bags just like special forces have, etc) and the fact that they literally have more assets than a Green Beret ODA in Afghanistan. The crucial and deadly difference is that special operations forces personnel train rigorously for years before deploying to a warzone. The training they receive assures that they stay cool in extremely high stress situations, and only engage a target when absolutely necessary. Keeping a cool head in a high stress scenario is EXTREMELY important with a job like that. These cops on the other hand have all the same equipment yet receive none of the same training. Most of them probably receive 10 hours of range time per month. On a static range with little to no stress. Now compare that to 6 hours in a live-fire close quarters "kill house" nearly every day for 8 months. The small amount of training that police receive is simply not adequate to allow them to operate with such deadly equipment. It's a dangerous concoction and a huge part of the reason that so many cops are going rambo in the US.

      My dad, who to be fair is not the most unbiased and logical when it comes to reactions to news stories, is of the firm opinion that the American government is doing these "unnecessary" things deliberately -- to place resources for being able to declare martial law within the next year or two. Like, before the next presidential election.
      He's of the camp that claims that FEMA is not only buying up tons more ammo than it needs but that when martial law hits they'll be rounding up the guns of honest citizens and also confiscating disaster-preparedness rations on the idea that people are "hoarding".
      I don't pay much attention to the news (at some point I figured out that it was just making me angry about things happening in places I have no ability to affect, so that's a deliberate choice for peace of mind and lowered blood pressure), so the little bit that I hear does come filtered through either internet viral stories or through my dad. But I'm trying to not buy in to conspiracy theories.
      Still... when police forces all over the country seem to be gearing up way above their needs, when they're responding to minor threats with major force and sparking riots, and when they seem to be ignoring many of the constitutional rights our country was built upon (as the barest example: confiscating large sums of cash *for the crime of carrying large sums of cash*, with no resource to get that money back), it's hard to remember that my brain is predisposed to pick up on patterns even when they don't exist.

It's just not smart to pull a run of the mill cop off the street, give him military-grade equipment, and then send him on his way. The problem with police in this country is that there isn't enough emphasis placed on deescalating conflict. Cops are supposed to be peacekeepers, but there won't be peace if they're the ones kicking the hornet's nest.

It hearts my soul that people didn't care when MULTIPLE people over the years were killed for just EXISTING in their homes. No one can say that there is no correlation between quarantine and the spike in support for black lives matter. And it has to fight against the Republican and conservative lies and narrative, FOX News, police spin ... but they have been being beatdown time and time again, it isn't an overnight success fairytale. Every instance, shootings of *anyone* or at schools, starts up the fight AGAIN -- only an idiot would say that it's all just starting right now, that people are only paying attention right now. This video, those actions, were excruciatingly explicit and torturously drawn out, so the backlash is even greater outrage than incidents before.
      And your point? "Wah wah wah -- I was caring before everyone else, you're all such posers, I was caring before it was cool?" Is that your point? Or are you, you ignorant dumbfuck, just judging me like you know me or something? Are you assuming I'm white and have never experienced racism directed directly at me?!? Are you assuming that I haven't been paying attention and noticing the numerous instances in my area (even the blonde Australian woman who was shot by a black cop, and the black cop was punished, but white cops get away with that same shit?!)? I'm even aware of shit that doesn't hit the news, like the murder of a black trans woman who was just found in her Richfield home, why isn't that in the damned news? Will it make the news -- or even get a proper investigation? Probably not, but it still needs to be made a part of the larger picture.
      But what is your stupid, self-centered point? That stating that this happens a lot, the same damned narratives, and the police never change, this is ... everyone but you only paying attention to it now? Fuck off.

    You wanna know what the Feguson police are like? Well, I live in St. Louis - which is near Ferguson. This story I'm about to tell you occured shortly before I got clean & sober so let me prephase by saying this isn't who I am today. Anyways... One of my dealers just happened to live in Ferguson & for some dumb reason me & 3 of my white friends drove down to Ferguson mid-riot/protests. (I'm from St. Louis but these particular friends all live in a smaller town about 50 miles west of here so they're a little country... one in particular). Well, the idiot driver, who has no license, took a wrong turn down a dead end street & we were met by 4 white cops in full riot gear & carrying automatic weapons. Mind you we now have a butt load of drugs, paraphernalia, & an open container of booze in the car. The driver rolls down the window & the cop asks what the hell we are doing there. (I remember his gun being uncomfortably close to my friends head- but far enough to mantain plausible deniability). The driver picks the best time ever to get tongue tied & says something like, "Um... you see, we're just... we're here to uh..." (I was afraid to draw any attention to myself by speaking because I had most of the drugs). Then after letting my friend awkwardly try to speak for 30 seconds or so, the cop just makes up a reason for him! He says "Are you idiots just here to see the riots?! Do you know how dangerous that is?" My friend responds, "Yes. Yes. Exactly! The riots. Thats it. We were just curious...." He agrees thats we came for & that we shouldn't have come at all. Then the cop- without checking for IDs or for car registration/insurance or anything- tells us to go home. He just lets 4 obvious junkies drive off into the sunset- 2 of which had warrants & all of us were on probation or parole. That was the day I learned 2 things beyond a shadow of a doubt:
    1. White Privilege is real &
    2. Dope makes you STUPID. If we'd waited an hour we could have gone somewhere not crawling with cops. But nope. If cops hadn't been so focused on the protestors- who were mostly black (not entirely but mostly)- we'd all have gone to jail/prison.
    This is my brain on drugs: 🍳

The police response in the beginning was bad, since it was unneeded intimidation toward peaceful protestors. Now, however, the police response is pretty appropriate. Or do you have some better way to handle looters and rioters damaging 100 business and shooting at people?

The protestors that were threatened with being shot by officers were refusing to leave the hotzone after police already asked them to. Some people saying that the video of Michael Brown committing a store robbery is relevant because it proves he was a criminal, and that seems to make sense until you stop and think about it for longer than three seconds. In what universe does shoplifting warrant killing him? You think that shoplifting should be punishable by death? A short spell in prison or a fine, yes, but DEATH? What the hell is this, Saudi Arabia? So he ran away from the police officer? How does that warrant gunning him down? Please understand that I wholeheartedly believe in cooperation with police officers, but then I come from Britain where there is no possibility of a police officer pulling a gun on me, and where I can expect mostly fair treatment and a fair trial. In Britain, seeing a police officer armed is a rarity, not an every day occurrence. That doesn't seem to be the case in much of the United States. I don't understand how people can back the police on this. I know that the situation is complex but with regard to this issue, it seems fairly clear cut that Michael Brown in no way deserved what happened to him.

On top of that the cop did not know about the robbery and did not stop him for the robbery. The security tape is absolutely irrelevant. The officer who shot him had no idea he committed the crime. And even if he did know, there was no justification for the shooting, because a $50 robbery (or even A robbery) doesn't give you the right to execute someone

    • @valhalla7408
      @valhalla7408 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Absolutely irrelevant"? Would you say that if it depicted Michael Brown thoughtfully holding the door for a little old lady, or helping the store owner back to his feet? (If yes, then you understand "state of mind," but purposely failed to apply the concept here. If not, then you want to selectively keep out evidence that would corroborate the testimony of the officer involved in the officer-involved shooting, i.e., that Michael Brown was belligerent and combative. Either way, you are mistaken.)
      In addition, while Officer Darren Wilson did not initially know that Brown was the perpetrator, he did know that Swisher Sweets were forcibly taken from the convenience store. Officer Wilson thought of Brown as a suspect when he noticed the cigarillos in Brown's hand, and the video became relevant as to Brown to show that Brown had engaged in violence a mere 10-15 minutes prior to his altercation with Wilson. Wilson, who had no disciplinary actions against him but was awarded a commendation for service 6 months ago, did not "execute" Brown for a robbery (although that makes for an irresistible, albeit false, narrative about police brutality against black men). Wilson shot a 300 pound armed robbery suspect who was resisting arrest and who charged at him. If you don't think a 300 pound male charging at you is not an imminent threat of great bodily injury or death, then I suggest you go to the nearest dojo or boxing gym and get informed.
      The video has certain limited relevancy, so "absolutely irrelevant" is simply inaccurate.

    • @TonyGuinzo
      @TonyGuinzo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

What have you to say about the policeman being attacked by a 300 pound adult man (corroborated by at least a dozen witnesses), let alone a robbery suspect? The officer shot and killed a man who resisted arrest and attacked the officer. Even the Supreme Court has given police latitude to kill suspects when they pose a significant threat to the police or to the public, even if the suspect is unarmed and is fleeing the scene of a crime. Demands to prosecute the officer in this instance are gratuitous, misdirected and inflammatory.

Not that the people who are police are all bad people, but that the fruit of a corrupt tree will never be able to bring safe sustenance to any person. Or, less metaphorically, that a person upholding a corrupt system can never hope to be fully just and especially cannot hope to reform the system to which they subscribe.

    The fact Michael Brown allegedly committed a strong arm robbery before his shooting is irrelevant for the following reasons: A) The cop who killed him was not aware of any robbery because B) that day on the scanners no robbery was called in as Michael Brown had purchased the cigars - if the robbery was the reason he was shot, why did it take a week to release that information, and why did the cop not know about it? Why was his alleged accomplice not in (and is still not in) police custody? If I recall, a white man bombed a school in Oklahoma city and was not shot on sight...are we saying that an assumed robber of cigars should be shot on sight and killed, but a murderer of children with detonator still in hand deserves his day in court?

    Why is the footage of him manhandle a clerk and steal a box of cigars irrelevant? It's not like this was weeks ago prior to him finding Jesus. It was time stamped 10 minutes before he was shot. Your video is 15 minutes long. You consider video footage of the suspect pushing himself past a clerk irrelevant effectively stealing from the store, but the color of the donated armor they're wearing damnable. I guess you thought it was ordered from a catalog where they could choose khakis or the burgundy.
    The other side of the argument is that it's better for the cops to not be protected. Do you think if the police tell them to disperse, the rioters and protesters will say, "Dreadfully sorry, old chap. Didn't know I was being unruly. I will vacate the premises immediately."? Are you under the impression that police officers have a natural immunity to glass bottles and bricks? Now that you have a badge: miscellaneous objects can't hurt you. It's like. ... you are aware cops get hurt, right? They're not werewolves that can only be killed by a silver bullet on a full moon. I know John McLain could survive jumping off an F15, but not all police officers can survive simply by the suspension of disbelief.
    I acknowledge that there is an inherent racism in the area. It's compounded by repetition and reputation. It's a very underfunded, poorly educated area with little opportunity for growth. People of the area can't afford to leave so they're stuck there. They can't improve the area because there's not enough income inherently in the area to fund through taxes. There's a hated for "the system" which results in a defiance of the system and its authority. (Hence the f---- the police and the kill the police chants). It'll take decades to solve the issues of the area and an investment both monetary and effort with no way to guarantee return.
    That said, unless you want to quell the rioters and the protesters yourself, don't say they're safe without the armor.

I saw it as a police officer who was paranoid of the situation killing Big guy with video footage showing he could be seen as violent. Solitary officer, outnumbered, no backup. If it was a clear case of killing for punishment.... why not kill the other guy?

    • @sortilegus
      @sortilegus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Gerard Newell You act as if death is just run-of-the-mill police work. They have other ways to subdue suspects that do not include deadly force. Tasers and mace, for example. If witness reports are accurate, then the suspect had his hands up at the time of the shooting. He had already given up. Jumpiness is no excuse for shooting someone dead in the street, even if that person can be "seen as violent." If this is the result of a "paranoid" officer getting trigger happy, then he should still be held accountable for his actions, and the entire police force should undergo revised training for how to properly handle a weapon in the field.
      But given the narrative we're hearing from the people of Ferguson and the blatant racism coming from members of the police there, is it really so hard to believe he shot Mike Brown due at least in part to racial bias?

The first thing I had to teach the 4th graders there, before they were even allowed to touch a bow, was that you do not point the bow at anything that is not your target. I had to explain that you should always treat a Nerf gun as if it's loaded and primed and never assume it won't fire because you could be wrong and make a mistake. I was apparently giving 4th graders more comprehensive firearms training than some police get.
