    This was Lang Lang 17 years ago. In many ways he's changed, but in most he hasn't. His technique has improved, but his expression has and always will remain the same. Such a vibrant, spunky performer! Brilliant!

    It's really astonishing. There are innumerable times when Lang Lang's fingers are standing straight up as he is playing these handfuls of powerful chords as only Rachmaninoff with his giant hands could write them. And he's not just playing them he's smashing them--and I don't mean that in a derogatory non-musical fashion either. By laws of physics and human anatomy his bones should be snapping like twigs and yet they don't. This guy can only be described in terms of super-human at least as far as his hands are concerned. As to his musicality I think he's criticized unfairly. This concerto is not to be played gently. Rachmaninoff himself said he wrote it for elephants, but when the piece calls for lyricism LL is right there caressing the music ever so lovingly, and when it calls for dynamism nobody can beat him. Even Horowitz in his heyday would be hard-pressed to summon this kind of power in his performances. History will judge LL's place in the Pianists' Parthenon but I think for the time being critics should just settle back and enjoy Rachmaninoff as only Lang Lang can deliver him.

      " - - as only Lang Lang can deliver him"? You regard this indescribably monstrous, circus-worthy, unstomachable exhibition as an enjoyable "delivery" that even Horowitz would've found hard to emulate? Do you have any idea of what you're saying here? I hope TH-cam will make Lang's presentation available for quite some time. You know why? Because his display could (and should) serve as the supreme example for young pianists of what to avoid, at all costs, in adopting a dignified stage presence. So, as paradoxical as it sounds, Lang's video may serve a useful, helpful purpose.

      @@richardvolpe7664 What I'm trying to focus on here, first of all is that LL is doing something that I've never seen Horowitz do to create power in the chords. I'm focused primarily on the anatomy of the hand. Granted Horowitz did things LL probably couldn't do and vice versa. But it is the end product that one should be listening to rather than viewing. Seeing what the pianist is doing--the gyrations, the histrionics, the grand gestures, etc distracts from the actual sound. I've heard Horowitz's early performances and he achieves speeds no one could match today.

      I have a pretty good idea where A-flat is, considering that I've played with orchestra 15 concertos by Bach, Beethoven, Weber, Grieg, Liszt, Saint-Saens, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Gershwin, so as "some normal guy", I think I qualify for directing deserved criticism to perhaps the most famous pianist, but far from the finest in the world. But if we're talking 'superlatives' here, he can be described by any half-awake observer as the most arrogant, tasteless, unprofessional pianist before today's public. If you so lovingly approve of Lang's pseudo-emotive, stupid-looking smiley face with all the accompanying "expressions" of erotic ecstasy and the grotesque mannerisms that somehow enrapture most viewers and nauseate just as many others, then go ahead and enjoy - - you sound like a pretty 'normal' guy, after all.

      As "some normal guy" who's taught music for 34 years, and who's performed with orchestras 15 concertos by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Weber, Grieg, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Saint-Saens and Gershwin, I feel qualified to voice criticism (and occasionally, compliments) to a pianist who is one of the world's most famous, but not finest, performers. Perhaps you've noticed that most of my neagative comments have to do with Lang's one-of-a-kind outlandish, grotesque, spectacularly unprofessional buffoonery at the keyboard. Not among his adoring (but highly impressionable) fans, I declare him to be a consmmate disgrace to traditional, respectable. dignified "concert etiquette", and one whose stage conduct should never be regarded as a positive "new standard". Furthermore, if he were to enjoy what he sees here, imagine his disappointment should he ever discover that "other" pianists (excepting Daniil Trifonov) don't provide such an appealing spectacle as demonstrated here by Lang. Of course, for even more of this kind of visual awesomeness, we can direct our lay person to this pianist's video presentations of the Liszt and Tchaikovsky concertos. @@classicalmusic432hz8

    • @richardvolpe7664
      @richardvolpe7664 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No - - the somber-faced Rachmaninoff would've been horrified and repelled by Lang's funny faces, crazy motions and exaggerations. For god's sake, can't you see that this display of unbridled, outrageous, crazed antics is carefully designed to "wow" his audience? This 'darling of the keyboard' has made a study of the many ways by which he cunningly arouses his viewers' emotions, and they BUY it, no matter what. That's what gets me - - how can they possibly see this crassness as "love and involvement"?
      "The best performance in every way"? Before you stick to that idea, you may want to check out versions by, Lugansky, Volodos, Nakamitsu, and of course, Horowitz (who, as a close friend of the composer, played this concerto for him while Rachmaninoff supplied the orchestra part on an adjacent piano). You should learn, then, that LL is not the 'only show in town'.

      But what if in his absolute abandon to the music, he himself has become a living animation of the music, its ultimate outgrowth? If so, then it is the music speaking through him as it does, without inhibition. The music chooses to move him, and he chooses not to stop it.

And I am probably inclined to agree that I would prefer the sound of other masters playing it, but for me I am both enchanted and blessed to watch the movement of his face and hands and body because it brings me deeper into the music experience, whereas for another it may be a distraction. If, by chance, you're referring to his silly-ass smiling, his far-away expressions of enchantment, and his seizure-like facial convulsions, this isn't comical - - it's uniquely pathetic. He doesn't deserve to perform on a formal concert stage. But under a circus tent with the other baboons - - that should suit him fine.
