  • Kennywood is a traditional amusement park just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This park has a unique setting on a ravine and an interesting collection of old and new rides. You have 8 roller coasters- including 3 classic wood coasters and 2 hyper coasters. This is the best park in the Parques Reunidos and Palace Entertainment chain.

    After watching: Steel Phantom broke drop and speed record at 85 MPH (not 80). This is a bucket list park but not my 1st next priority, however I hope to got there one day, especially for it's record breaking history. Thanks for posting!

    I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 60s and my annual grade through high school picnics were spent at Kennywood. I still fond memories of time spent there with my family and friends. I’ve lived in multiple states and visited many amusement parks including Disney Land, Knott’s Berry Farm, Ceder Point, Seven Flags and others. Kennywood is still my all time favorite.

      Cedar Point is just so much better, and I do have that level of nostalgia and connection for Kennywood. Not as much nostalgia for Cedar Point as much as it creates new memories for me.

    I went to this park on a youth group trip back in like 2009 and I'll never forget it. Even though it's not one of the biggest parks out there, it has a special atmosphere and I've been wanting to go back ever since. Also, isn't this where they filmed Adventureland?

    I visited for the first time in 2021. After hearing so many negative things, I was pleasantly surprised to have had a great day there. The setting of the steel mill across the river is about the most Pittsburgh thing ever. It fits perfectly. And the park’s thrill coaster lineup is great with three classic woodies and three modern steel coasters. Along with a well themed family coaster and a kiddie coaster. Noah’s Ark and Old Mill are charming as heck. Great park!

    I've only been to this park once in 2017 and it already has a place in my heart since my grandparents on my father's side were originally from Pittsburgh and a friend of mine from high school was also from Pittsburgh so his family and kine have been here a lot and really loved this place. I knew I'd have to come here at some point because of that.

    With rather interesting collection of coasters, Kennywood is one unique place to visit that you can't get an experience like it anywhere else. With a 9 inversion S&S Hyper, a Morgan Hyper, and 3 really old wooden coasters that are incredible they are in great condition to this day.

    I've always felt it's such a privilege that I live in such a close vicinity to this amazing park. Growing up, everyone around me wanted the bigger and "better" rides, but I've always loved and appreciated this park.

    We love Kennywood. We've been going there since our childhoods. The nostalgia factor is great and for the 2022 season there have been many improvements that I was happy too see. The restrooms at the front of the park have been completely redone, improved walkways, new drink refill stations, modern lockers and more I can't think of now. The park is looking better than ever for their 125th celebration, that is going on for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

    Kennywood DOES have a lot of land to work with. They own the property with the abandoned strip mall accross the street. They also have Busch Gardens Tampa's former monorail in storage, which they could install to help people get accross that road to the enterance. They could demolish the buildings on that property and make that the parking lot while expanding the park into the current parking lot. I thought that's what they should have done for Steel Curtain since it doesn't really fit in the skyline of the park although I immagine in 1991 I may have said the same about Phantom and I can't immagine the park without it (although maybe the fact that it's been there longer than I've been alive contributes to that, and I also think being a terrain coaster like Jack Rabbit and Thunderbolt helps Phantom fit in). On the Halloween and Christmas events, I highly recomment Phantom Fright Nights if you're going for a haunt. Honestly the fog filled tunnel with chainsaw men going at you is the scariest haunt I've experienced at a park and I say that in the best way possible. I can't quite recommend Holiday Lights though, the same critiques enthusiasts throw at Hersheypark's Candylane can apply to Holiday Lights except more extreme where they normally don't run coasters at all. That being said they did run Jack Rabbit last year which resulted in their best go at it in my opinion. They should run all of the coasters in my opinion, although if their target is "families not teenagers" for it, at least run all the woodies.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A lot of Christmas events are great for locals, but hard to recommend for people from a distance due to limited rides. That's interesting to know they have that extra property they could use.

      @shaydelre1898 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @urbex_coasters
      @urbex_coasters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shaydelre1898 Well the former Kmart was demolished recently (the largest of the buildings on the property). Possible they go the rest of the way and demolish the rest of the buildings so they could do that. It would likely mean demolishing and modernising the enterance to move it in front of wherever they would put rides in the current parking lot area. I suspect they were planning it before COVID as the next big thing after Steel Curtain, COVID delayed things.

    • @joehung1552
      @joehung1552 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't forget that they moved their US offices to Pittsburgh. I think they moved either near the top of the hill near the shopping center or on the old Kmart side.

    • @urbex_coasters
      @urbex_coasters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shaydelre1898 And do more appropriate coaster placement. Don't remove your beloved antique cars ride for a coaster meant to be the next vekoma boomerang (Sky Rocket is "the original Sky Rocket" and it was meant to be cloned all over the place, like the Sky Rocket 2 has been), tear down the strip mall, move the parking there, and expand the park. No, don't put a towering modern coaster that doesn't rely on terrain in the lake area, put it in the current parking lot and expand the park, have the lot moved accross the street. If Log Jammer is past the end of it's service life and there's metal fatigue from so many years of water running through the trophs (was definately the case) make the replacement coaster fit in the area. Use the revine rather than building tall. Maybe use Log Jammer's station and have a splashdown finale in the area where it's pool was to pay tribute. As much as I like Steel Curtain as a coaster, I am not a fan of the placement and don't like that the modern black and yellow seem to be taking over the park from what I've seen (not a Steelers fan so Steelers fans feel free to comment on it. I know you don't like the Phantom paint job, I personally would've preferred black on black to pay omage to the original Steel Phantom).

    I believe the issue with using an Platinum Pass at the gate has be corrected. In fact I sat in front on Riverside Park in February waiting to see the if Spinner was going to open. Once it did I bought a Kennywood Pass for the perks and 3 minutes later scan the email QR code for parking and then at the gate. I was extremely impressed by that.
    Also I visited Sunday and the park is looking fabulous and ops were excellent! It wasn’t perfect since Steel Curtain opened on time it went down a few hours later for the day. Overall this was the first first since the park was bought that I felt that I could love Kennywood again!

    Yeah, it took me quite a bit of walking to find Phantom's entrance. Other than that, I got around alright. I've still only had a Saturday in 2020 for about 6 hours. I need more time at this park! Even though I missed out on Steel Curtain (closed) & Thunderbolt (nobody willing to ride with a solo in 2020), I still had a great time here.
    I was surprised that Phantom has no air gates. Shockingly, Exterminator had a 5-minute wait for me, despite riding it 2 hours after opening, so I did it twice. Sky Rocket was on half a train operations, but I lucked into a back row assignment for my only ride.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You definitely got lucky with Exterminator's queue line. Once that line builds up, it doesn't subside all day. Sky Rocket was pretty bad for capacity in 2020 due to the one train ops.

    an interesting note. If you take the overall elevation change from the top of the lift hill to the bottom of the 2nd drop on Phantom, I believe its around 300ft down, making it entirely possible that phantom is going 90 at the bottom of the ravine, rather than the advertised 85. (The original Phantom was going way too fast for it and that was advertised at 80)

    As a local, who has not only been a regular patron to Kennywood but also a former employee, I have seen the park from nearly every angle. So, touching upon points in your review, here are some insights:
    A) Before being sold to Palace, Kennywood was more akin to what Knoebels is today. While I lament some of the charm being lost with this turnover, I wholeheartedly agree that the park perfectly balances the old with the new.
    B) While I wish I could attribute the abomination which is Garfield’s Nightmare to Palace, that was before the sale. As far as the Old Mill in its current form (as well as Noah’s Ark), both were refurbished in recent years to reflect their former selves (down to the whale’s tongue). What you’ve experienced is akin to what you would have had you visited pre-2000’s.
    C) The operations vary, but by far the best coaster crew are those at the Jack Rabbit, who really hustled even during the 2020 season. As for Black Widow, the reason it is so problematic is due to how technical it is. If one of the 40 riders pulls on their restraint before they automatically lower, it disrupts the cycle, to which the whole process must begin again. Due to its location on the edge of the ravine, the thrills are exponentially greater.
    D) Pitt Fall, from what I have heard, has a second home somewhere in China, though I cannot confirm or deny.
    E) The train has been re-themed three times since I’ve been visiting the park, with the earliest iteration showcasing statues of various historical scenes (including a tree with a chalk mark denoting a musket-ball, and a sign stating “George Washington was here.”).
    F) The carousel is one in a handful that has not moved locations: having only operated at Kennywood since its debut in 1926. Another carousel with this distinction - also a Dentzel - can be found 3 and a half hours away at Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo, Maryland.
    G) If you ever get the chance, do not pass up the Holiday Lights event, as it truly is magical.
    H) For lighter crowds, look for the overcast days calling for minimal to moderate rain, as the lines tend to be shorter (this strategy works best if you are a season pass holder).
    I) For Phantom’s Revenge: car 5; row 9. That is the magic seat. Worth a try at least once.
    J) Great review showcasing my home park!

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I think Phantom has the best crew, but Jack Rabbit’s is good too. I don't know if I'd ever get to their Christmas event due to how far the park is for me and the limited ride lineup, but I'd love to try their Halloween event to get night rides. If the park was even more charming prior to my visit, it must have been truly special.

    Great review. Surprised you didn't make mention of any of the cosmetic changes for 2022. I realize you probably haven't visited yet this year, however I wouldn't put it passed you. Many of the people that have made videos on the 2022 changes really gush over them. Personally, I think it looks a bit too much like they got a really good deal on an ugly yellow paint. Just too much of it for my taste, but in fairness I haven't seen it in person yet.
    I do love this park as I think it has done well maintaining a family run feel in spite of it's corporate ownership. Some of the upgrades have me thinking this may be slipping away. I have trouble with it being an all day park and look for ticket deals that allow me shorter evening visits. I'd prefer leaving feeling I wish I had more time here than getting in early and feeling I've done and seen all it has to offer by late afternoon.

      Do you plan to use the skip-the-line passes? I suspect you'll want it if you do Kings Island on Saturday. Kennywood will be busier on Saturday, but there are less rides so you should be able to do all the big ones in a day even if they're busier.

    With no warning, they closed Steel Curtain first thing in the morning on a busy June Saturday. Phantom was down on and off half the day too. Thunderbolt was closed the entire day, and Exterminator most of the day due to it breaking down repeatedly. Wildly disappointing cuz we planned our entire 16 hour drive around it. Exterminator now only allows two riders, which further kills capacity

    This is the closest park to me (~1 hour) however I don't call it my home park as I go to Cedar Point multiple times a month and this once a year at most. I'm just not the biggest fan of this park because of how poorly its run. I will admit that they have made some pretty good decisions in the last yearish, and its great ride collection has made me revisit more than I have in the past. Hopefully its upward trend continues.

    The last few years were rough for this park. Black Widow and Skyrocket both spent over a year closed. Then Steel Curtain closed for a whole season, and then when it reopened it valleyed and they had to do one train for the entire season. Also, skyrocket ran one train for the entire 2020 season. But times are changing, everything should be open this year and they’re rebranding the hell out of the park.

    Before watching: I know this isn't Cedar Point by Cedar Fair or Six Flags Magic Mountain, but Kennywood is one of those parks that have a long history of record breaking coasters, especially regarding the most important stat of all: DROP! dating back to Jackrabbit in1920. Thunderbolt in 1924, Thunderbolt again in the mid 60s and Phantom's Revenge in 1991.

But I don't think they're trying to be quiet; they just don't have the marketing and also the GP don't care about records older than about 22 years (i'm guessing ;) )

    I like Aero, but we had a bitchin’ Ferris Wheel in that spot that I miss. I haven’t seen the redone Log Jammer area, but it looks like it sucks. It was very actual park esq then, now it looks industrial (we also have 2 other teams…one is recently more successful than 🏈 and the other was the main team in Southwestern Pa for the better part of a century so…). I was thinking they should 86 the Skyrocket, and while you made the Steel Curtain sound impressive for the first time to me, there is something drastically wrong with it. They didn’t spend that much $ on it and that spot to have it closed for 90% of it’s brief existence without it being incredibly sketchy. Also, I’m pissed about the Paratrooper. It was such a nice end of night ride, with a gorg view. I will forever champion the wooden coasters (Jack Rabbit was my first ride ever at like 4), but guiltily agree, Phantom is my favorite. However, Steel Curtain or not, Thunderbolt will always be the centerpiece and main coaster. None of the others were ever the #1 coaster in America 😉
