Persian Meatballs, Traditional Teahouses, and the Perfect Kebab: MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran (Part 2/3)

  • For our second installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh visits Nayeb, a white-tablecloth restaurant that's been serving up succulent kebabs in Iran for over 120 years-and even got its initial footing in the bazaar. Their signature dish, koobedih, is a spiced meat kebab dipped in onion juice and cooked over an open flame, served with rice, somagh (sour powdered sumac) butter, and raw egg.
    After dining with Nayeb's fifth generation, great-great-great-great-granddaughter Sogol, Gelareh heads to the Baghe Saba Teahouse-a cultural hub akin to a Parisian salon that was once a mens-only enclave but now welcomes families. There, Gelarah is greeted by a buffet of salads, stuffed eggplant, barley soup, and every size of sabzi koofteh (Persian meatballs).

    I'm from Germany and visited Iran 2 months ago...
    As a matter of fact, i couldn't believe how great it is.
    rich culture
    amazing landscape
    nice people
    delicious foods
    i don't know what i should say.

      The hammams are wonderful. We do have them around where I live in France and the Pacha one near me is the largest in France and only for women, always. It's a day of Paradise. They are superb in Turkey and I loved my two hours in a mixed one there. Even the little ones can be great, they don't mess around, you get looked after and all fixed up, you emerge good for weeks, just feeling refreshed. :)

    Food looks absolutely amazing, and this woman isn't annoying like most other Munchies presenters.
    I'm from Istanbul so I can see a lot of similarities, like the tea houses and stuff, but the kebabs look totally different. The dolmas and the koftah's look similar but we don't use fillets for kebabs, which is just a goddamn shame. Marinating them in onion juice sounds fucking fab.

      I was pleased I got so quickly attached to Turkish foods. You guys have amazing condiments, yogurts, too. I really liked the basic salads with no vinegars and the red tea. Wonderful pop music -- such fun surprises!!

    • @DeadGlassEyes
      @DeadGlassEyes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      CuteCatFaith Yeah we usually use pomegranate extract on our salads which is obviously just a really good thing. Any of my friends who come to visit always leave with a few extra pounds guaranteed, Turkish food is incredibly diverse and just very tasty. Glad you had a good time! Istanbul?

    • @CuteCatFaith
      @CuteCatFaith 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DaemoniumCC No, but I have a pal in Istanbul, from the USA, who decided a decade ago to learn the language and go live and work there. (He's in Uska Daar these days.) I went alone to Ege and at first thougt, oh, no, what have I done? But a couple of days I was getting more and more attached to stuff there. I understand the East is different, it's an enormous country, and generally much misunderstood. :)

    • @DeadGlassEyes
      @DeadGlassEyes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      CuteCatFaith It's generally very misunderstood, which is a shame. We're seen as this dumb muslim country thanks to our president, and even though there are people like that here (like everywhere else) it's pretty far from the truth. As I'm sure you are when you visited.

    When I was in the ohare airport in Chicago, just about to literally step onto the plane to go to europe, a Homeland Security officer named Juarez began to harass me. He literally ripped my passport from my own hands after I had already shown it to him already. He began to question me even demanding my drivers license. He almost had me miss my plane due to his questions. Even repeating the same questions I had already answered. I told him I don’t like what ICE is doing detaining children in cages. One of the questions he ask me was, “do you have any plans for visiting Iran or Russia?” I didn’t. I told him no. But why are we so oppressive against Iran. Just because they don’t agree with the American capitalist system and imperial/colonial tactics all around the world. These guys can’t say I can’t visit Iran or Russia. And I shouldn’t be intimidated like that or face any unfair consequences. It’s about time we made some healthy changes. We also need to be democratic and allow ALL nations to have an equal and fair membership in our world.

    I really liked eating Middle Eastern foods in the Mid-East! I am fairly adventurous (went all alone) but at first, I thought, I don't know ... but by Day Two, I found myself so attached to them, to so many things, and what music! It's a bit hard to describe unless you know someone who has been at least somewhere there and avoided hotel food (I can't stand that!). The climates, fresh products and methods really make sense to your senses. Uprated.

    Oh my, starting at Ep 1 I quickly found I preferred this to Bourdain! Bourdain’s prog was interesting, but too much time “explaining” Iran. Munchies cuts straight to the food, and what places and dishes Gelareh shows us. What a wonderful surprise in Ep 2 - the Bagh-e Saba “teahouse”, right round the corner from where I used to live in Kuche Kia (doubtless has a different name now as Kia was one of the Shah’s generals!). But I think it started up after I was there, so I never had a chance to go. Anyway, Iran has some of the best food, the most delicious dishes, in the world, no two ways about it. I’d love to see more by Gelareh as she can only have scratched the surface with these progs. You learn what food IS in Iran, just how good it can be. No more caviar though please!

      There are so many shawarma and kabab restaurant in/around Toronto. Some of them are pretty good, I believe. There are Jordanese, Lebanese, Turkish, Iranian and many other middle east restaurants. Although they might not be as good as those ones in this video, but the selection is wide, m8.

    • @zhengbq

      Gen Rej Not many middle east buffet, true. But personal opinion, kabab and shawarma are way more delicious when severed fresh, instead of placed in buffet tray. In that way, they tend to lose their tenderness due to overcook (buffet tray heats the food constantly to maintain temperature)

    • @PinoySoshi
      @PinoySoshi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @CuteCatFaith
      @CuteCatFaith 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, even buffets in the Middle East really don't work for all dishes. A lot of stuff you have to wait a few minutes for so it's freshly made. But I know what you mean. Most cuisines do not transport well. There can be some wonderful good, close imitations, however!
