In Germany we have a saying: "Jammern auf hohen Niveau" in english you can translate it to: complaining on a high comfort level. In general I think complaining is a habitual tendecy (some can do it from morning to evening) it´s a sign that they feel as a victim and dont take responsibilty for their think patterns and behaviour. It´s the same when I watch to much toxic political news and I get sucked in and start to complain about everything and also feel like a victim.
My solution for now is to consume more "Dharma Content" and less toxic content. This is my first step to get out of this cycle.
Thanks Mr. Bodhisattva that you stay with us in this toxic environment and give us another perspective of live and thinking.

I feel like I'm living in two worlds simultaneously. On the one hand I believe what you are saying to be true, from my own experience and practice.
On the other hand we have reached levels of economic inequality that rival those of the gilded age.
And this is not a natural process like aging or something like that, it is very much designed and intentional.
And the nightmarish state of the US, in every avenue, will reach the rest of the West, this process is underway for anyone to see.
I know that hate and fear are poisonous to ourselves, but I find it hard to not hate and fear the state of the world.
And I find it hard to believe that it would be right for most people to take this lying down.

That sounds like a Russian perspective, "America's degenerate cultural nightmare will infect the rest of the West". That sounds like RT shtick. Be careful what political programming you accept - that stuff can make you think you're living in a nightmare. I live in the USA, and it's not a nightmare around here. I know some miserable people, but they've made themselves that way.
This dude gave away the secret, in this video🤣. Watch it again, but take it personally, instead of projecting it outside. If you and your coworkers all buy scratch tickets, and one of them wins $100 and you don't win anything, do your eyes light up that they won, or do you start thinking about how you should've been the winner, if he didn't cut in line, you would've bought that ticket and so on? THAT'S the difference between not living in a nightmare and living in one. It's got nothing to do with being opposed to the evil landlords. It's good to work towards a fair income and housing for all, and so that individuals don't hog too much wealth and power for themselves... but the landlord and company owner aren't the cause of the nightmare aspect. That's caused by the enemy within. I'm not kidding - he alludes to that in the video. Externalizing that struggle is avoidance of dealing with it. A practice called tonglen, and its associated practices, can help reverse the nightmare. That's the best I know about, for that.

@@ultimatemeaning ^This. Our standard of living includes enough food for everyone. Enough entertainment for everyone. Enough opportunity to grow. The real intent and design is the media rubbing your nose in it. While we sit and allow our minds to consume our attention we aren't making our lives better. Andy Frisella (self made millionaire) often says the only way to a future we would like to see is personal excellence. Meaning to live in the space that you think the world should emulate. It's that simple.

Suggesting that homeless people in Canada should, in a certain sense, count their blessings that they don’t live in Nepal disturbs me. Could you explain how the cold and hunger someone homeless in Nepal feels is different to the cold and hunger a homeless person in Canada feels?
I understand how fixating on one’s own suffering can intensify that sense of suffering, and reflecting on the suffering of others can diminish one’s own suffering. However, I’m not sure how starving and freezing to death on the streets of Canada differs from starving and freezing to death in the mountains of Nepal.

No, I'm not saying homeless people should count their blessings. I'm saying you need to get things into perspective and I'm also saying that I'm surprised by old Canadians to complain about the healthcare in this country when most of the world doesn't have any whatsoever.v♥♥♥

@@ultimatemeaning Of course, complaining about material wealth, or lack of, needs to be put into perspective. I agree that becoming depressed because we don’t have the latest iPhone when there are people in the world who don’t have shoes needs to be reflected upon put into perspective.
I agree with the fundamental message of this teaching. I’m also familiar with the parable of the woman who lost her child and the Buddha told her he could bring her child back to life if she could visit every house in the village to find a family that has never experienced the pain of a loved one dying. She finally realises that her suffering wasn’t unique and I believe the story serves to illustrate that once she had realised that others had suffered the same misfortune she was able to come to terms with her own loss (to a degree).
      Thank you for your clarification.

Perhaps this is just survivorship bias, but when I was homeless through two Michigan winters I was never without what was needed to survive which I certainly felt there was a spiritual component to.
I had knowledge of bushcraft, a dog to protect me and I had soundness of mind; all of which were blessings that few people I met in that life had going for them. Still, living was on the razor's edge. You could help others if you weren't going to see them again, but to invite attention from someone with the chance to learn your routines and habits was a mortal danger. The people who appreciated the help did so with an authenticity that I've never witnessed within society, but there were also people who would interpret your kindness as a sign of weakness and wait for their chance to attack. I suppose adversity changes each person uniquely according to what was already dormant within them.
Even interacting with society was dangerous because when you're that low you're hated by strangers in a way I don't think anyone who hasn't experienced it themselves could understand. Overall I think I saw more ugliness in humanity than beauty: which ended up deepening my appreciation of the beauty I do find, but it also saddens me when I think about all the squandered potential.

We don't feel that the world is unfair. We feel that society is unfair. And since humans built society to be unfair, whether intentional or not, it stands to reason that humans can change it to be fair.
Jealousy isn't the issue. One does not need to be happy for others because of their prosperity while simultaneously suffering poverty, especially when prosperity has a side effect of causing poverty to others - again, whether intentional or not.
In your infinite wisdom about us being capable of making our own choices in life, choices to feel a certain way or not, choices in perspective, etc. you fail to see the obvious. And that is this: we are not the only beings making choices, AND the choices of individuals can and do affect others.
One does not need to be grateful for what they do have if what they have is insufficient for a healthy life. And one does not need to live in Congo or a terrible place in order to realize what "true poverty" is like. If I presented 2 plates to you, one full of grass and the other full of crap, then told you to choose which you'd like to eat, you'd clearly choose the plate full of grass - however, neither are healthy options.
Being convinced to be grateful for what you have in this way only allows those doing harm to continue to do so, again whether it is intentional or not.
And comparing ourselves to extremes in the way you've suggested is an infinite regress since one can always imagine or experience worse than one's current circumstances and only serves to minimize our own situations and creates a passive attitude of unmotivation and inaction towards further progress towards solutions to the problems we do face.
One last thing: happiness as a goal is harmful. After all, the owners of companies who refuse to pay their workers a living wage based on local demographics are doing so in order to secure their own happiness by way of profit. Harmful politicians in any system of government that has ever been implemented on earth is the same way.
The pursuit of happiness is unhealthy and harmful and so should not be the goal. Happiness is a byproduct of certain behaviors and body states and comes and goes.
Healthy living on an individual level as well as others is a better goal to strive for if you want a healthy society with healthy people.

Ohhhhhh i never made that connection with jealousy. I used to get into situations and wouldn't recognize when someone was feeling that way until the whole thing got way out of hand. Autism is a trip. 😅
ETA- the connection that when we are triggered at someone else's happiness or wellbeing, that specific experience is jealousy. I have observed situations where a person worked to undermine another's good news, all while attempting to maintain a "friendly" attitude, and at the time it didn't make ANY sense to me. It seems like such a strange thing to get angry about.

    Very wise words.
In modern west when people say "how the world is today" or "how society has evolved" we aren't always aware that we mean just the part that we know, the places we live in. But a big part of the world is still burdened by the same injustices and suffering it has always existed. Evolution of society to a more fair one is far from done.
Of course things in western countries aren't also far from being easy. People have little choice but working too much and feel stress and insecurity large part of the time. When i complain about that and criticize the ways this society works, i worry about them, about all the people. I don't do it for me. Things are sometimes difficult for me as well, but i consider myself very lucky in several aspects. It could be better but it could definitely be worse.
Sometimes i feel jealous for some rich people, but not because they are rich, but because they unfair to others, they aren't thankful for how the effort of others has contributed to their succes. I do like people succeeding and becoming free from poverty and stress. What i don't like is that in many aspects, whether they know it or not, the most rich people utilize or make the rules by how the rest of us have to struggle, and then they insult all the hard working people with lives not as easy as theirs of being lazy.
Apart from that, again I agree with what you said in this video and everyday i try to confort myself thinking that I'm kind of lucky after all.
    Have a nice weekend.

Well l was just thinking about this topic. The Buddha was a wise one has to work on desire as well. There is pure desire and ego desire. The wealthy are not as much happy anyways. It is true one can't biochemically make love and hate at the same time. Resentment is hate that never stops to allow a person to create happiness. The fight and flight reflex can lead to great misery and lead to stress disease. I listen to old radio love songs most days which is kind of corny but it actually helps your body to produce feel good chemicals. I've been going to start making processed homemade soy which it's rather good as well chemically to create a feeling of well being. It's ok to love and take care of yourself so you have compassion and understanding to give. Glad you feel better!

I am not unhappy. I am angry. Frustrated and angry that my species is so destructive to other species, as if we have greater right to live than anything else in the universe.
The selfishness and inequity annoy me beyond expression and piss me off. The "cost of living" ought NOT be the extinction of other species, and I will be unhappy and whinge a bit (maybe or maybe not) when OUR species faces the same fee for its abbreviated passage. Okay, I admit to having an arrogance to reserve to myself the right to pass judgement upon my own species, and see that the efforts made to protect and conserve biodiversity are mostly due to our creating the problem in the first place, through stupidity, greed, selfishness and brain dead vacuous indifference, but pluck it, being pissed off is the only bloody luxury left to the witnessing of our fast track toward self-destruction and collapse of everything, because despite wannabe gods, moving mountains and changing the course of rivers like superman, the evidence instead is that we fail the first test of planet management, and we do it for a hording of tokens called money which we have made our master and to which we volunteer as willing and apparently miserable slaves. (With "miser" in the word.)

Having been raised in a non-Western country, hearing about Westerners' "suffering" often makes me laugh. So much of what they view as suffering comes from blindly following the mainstream narratives on what one needs to have and when one needs to have it before they can consider themselves happy or satisfied, which hardly ever happens.
Even those spiritual longings are manufactured by the mechanisms inherent in consumerist societies. What nobody talks about is that no amount of spiritual seeking will help you if you don't question what you've been taking for granted all your life. Do you really need a bigger house than your relatives, and you need it sooner than them? Do you really need to move for "better" career opportunities - better than what? How can anyone in their right mind allow such concerns to define themselves?
That said, I don't believe anyone can stop being jealous just because they are told to. Things don't work like this. And thinking that in other places that you've never seen people are less "fortunate" than you are is also hardly likely to do the trick. The apparent "happiness" of those having no other option than living most basic lifestyles in the Third World is nothing to aspire to, honestly.
Appreciating the resources that you have is itself a gift (whether you believe it's from god, the universe, or whatever). When it happens, it happens, and there is no turning back. But it seems that, for it to happen, you first need to be deprived of whatever provides the imagined stability in your life. Then, once you're back on your own two feet, gratitude is a most natural feeling, and it persists (my experience).
But, most umportantly, dare to question the beliefs that have been put into your head since you were born - recognise and question them, however uncomfortable it may seem.
You want compassion from random people in the outside world? Why not try giving it to yourself first - by decluttering your mind to begin with? See where that gets you.

This is very thought provoking. Envy is one of the vices that I fear the most. When I visit family or interact with fellow employees and they ask me how I am doing, I always complain about how bad things are for me, I usually choose things in my life that are difficult, such as health, financial issues, accidents, or things as simple as driving in dangerous traffic. The result is that I make them feel good because they see that I am worse off than they, or in some cases it makes them feel empathy for me, or a combination of both. It is kind of like putting myself a notch below them. This relieves tension on their part of competitiveness and it creates a relaxed atmosphere since they have already outcompeted me. Even though I am very happy and joyful in reality. I have known people who deliberately trigger envy in others by bragging or showing off some quality or wealth or advantage, they can see the other person feeling envy and suffering and they enjoy doing this to other persons, sometimes it is a cultural thing. My own discomfort is not envy, I rejoice when someone is doing well. My discomfort is when someone is making strong efforts to trigger envy in me by deliberately touting their good fortune with bad intentions. It is not the envy that triggers me but their bad intentions, they are trying to harm me.

It's interesting. We have walked very different paths, in life and in thought, but still, we end up with the same conclusions.
Being more of an "absurdist", I view life and especially consciousness as the most fortunate anomalies EVER, to be produced in this vast nothingness.
I wonder about your views on the values of suffering and the lessons it brings. Perhaps in a later video :)

I am not really concerned about my standard of living, even though I am far below the Canadian poverty line, however I am concerned about environmental collapse and the rise of fascism or technofeudalism and the idea that robots will allow people to consume what little is left of the environment. I am concerned that people like Elon Musk and Trump and corporations like Monsanto are monopolizing the world and will replace nature with privately owned GMOs... I am concerned that bigotry will be used to allow these technofeudalist to wage race war against the third world to steal resources.. *even white bread Canada is at risk from these imperialists, so I can only imagine the horrror that will be unleashed on the "third world" ... However you are right about all the Liberals whining, while also preventing real left wing policies providing community infrastructure.. people want low taxes and everything else at the same time... but the real world dont work like that. So as is their tradition, Liberals will just look the other way while this race war unfolds, so long as they get a robot, so long as they can go on vacation or own their own house, they can just whine about something offensive that someone said on twitter to alleviate their guilt about enabling the ongoing race war... these same Liberals also hate homeless people sleeping in parks and want the police to harass them endlessly, so nope, I dont have much sympathy for people aspiring to maintain their unsustainable "middle class" but I am not jealous either

I agree we are stronger when we pull together. The Pirahã people are one group of people who've lived in this way of being. I'm not jealous of the wealthy. But i also don't see our western system like its a blessing of some sort. Many of the countries what have turned toward our extreme style capitalist ways of being, are forced to do so partly as they'll need to attempt to build up their own military capabilities . To be able to still stay somewhat competitive with our own powerful militaries . Otherwise they could potentially be easily conquered, and stand to be invaded and taken over, by people among us. Even the social governments are still forced to attempt to stay competitive with us with their level of military force. Meaning they'll be forced to need to use a part of the money for military forces rather than to use it to go toward their peoples health and wellbeing
I have no reason to be jealous of the extremely wealthy among us. Many of them have absolutely no idea where this dire mess could potentially stand to end up
Evidently the Pirahã on average work around 15hr per week. Nobody among them goes without, not even the elderly or disabled. They think we are telling them some sort of sick joke, when told how our own people are using suicide as a way out. They love their lives so much they cannot begin to imagine why anyone in the world would choose to kill themselves

There was no statement that we are blessed just because we live in the West. In fact it is my opinion that these poor Nepalis are better off than we are in many ways. The point is that we should be grateful for what we have and this will be easier if we try to get things into perspective and not merely focus on our own grievances

A huge technological shift is coming, autimated builders and hunters/farmers. new medical breakthrus on the daily it feels like right now. type one diabetes and certain cancers are about to get deleted. The world is plenty big for everyone, I cant wait till I can get everyone their own personal spaceship so you can house, and make anything you need. We need to empower people so we can make govts irrelevant. One issue we have is that it takes so much time to learn all the langues of creation, AI is helping speed that up, and it wont be long before we can apply that to our own bodies. We must keep moving forward and keep mastering compassion. the singularity is near, so prepare yourself for the burdens of freedom.

This is true but hard because with mondialism and capitalism our mind can not see the whole chain of production. Like old farmer one century ago could see the direct result of their work, we today do not see but a small part of the chain production and also with capitalism it is impossible to compete against the machine for artisans. So our mind has nothing to grasp on how to improve the system even with good will. Also we have forgot to have common goods. Lastly the system temporarly rewards actions that are negative for the common good but keep the system in place.

I don't like this comparing of materialistic suffering. There are a lot of stressor and a hit in the West they don't have do deal with in Nepal. Don't make it a comparison game.

I get what you are saying-the poor in Nepal live in an entirely different world than the poor in Canada. There’s no comparison. That said, a lot of people in the comments are saying they weren’t aware of different levels of poverty, and the different social strata of homeless. I think this video was made for them to widen their perspective.

    • @falljosh

He was just trying to convey things could be worse, to appreciate what you have, and look only at others when you want to help them. The comparison was meant to illustrate that point.
I was homeless as a child for some time, but at least I had food. I never really appreciated that because my life was chaotic and young kids lack self reflection. It wasn't until I got older I could look back and be grateful for things I did have. How easily it could have been worse if we didn't get government assistance for food or if people didn't provide us with shelter later on. I always think about how if you removed those things, my life may have ended there.
But some people did at least look at our situation and understand things were worse for us in many ways compared to them and helped us.
