- SpaceFields is thrilled to announce the successful hot-firing of our groundbreaking aerospike solid rocket engine, marking a monumental milestone in India’s propulsion technology landscape. The static-test campaign was conducted at our Propulsion test facility at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Challakere in Chitradurga district.
Our aerospike engine, meticulously engineered, featured a 168mm dia, 1.36m length rocket motor and was powered by HTPB-based composite propellant. In our latest test, the engine delivered improved ballistic performance, optimal pressurization, and reduced burn time, achieving a peak thrust of 13.42 kN and peak pressure of 5 MPa, while generating a total impulse of 32,624.3 Ns. These outcomes validate the extensive design, high-fidelity simulations and iterative optimizations we have undertaken to refine the truncation, curvature, and geometry of the aerospike nozzle.
Key highlights of the test were the characteristic shock profiles and a regressive burning curve, validating our engine performance under dynamic high-pressure combustion conditions. Addressing previous challenges, we successfully remedied the chuffing instability observed in earlier firing with several iterations of ignitor refinements.

I could hear lots of dham-dham music, but I couldn't see any mach diamonds
Mach diamonds always make an engine-test video much more impressive than dham-dham music
Shock diamonds are generally formed due to pressure difference between the exhaust and surroundings. Our engine was tuned for atmospheric pressure which is why the intensity of the said mach diamond is extremely low. Combine that with the fact that the exhaust glows bright, the shock diamonds are almost invisible (almost because if you look pretty closely at the beginning you can see a few just on the edge of the exit of the rocket). Liquid fuel which generally burns with a more clean flame, so even the low intensity mach diamonds are visible, while solid propulsion shall innately have high luminosity.
