Always a great sight to see, Network Rail's Rail Grinder in action, water and sparks flying!
Captured by our Derby cameras (in partnership with Rai Operations Group) during the early hours of Monday 18th April 2022, the grinder set is working 610Q Derby Chaddesden Sidings to Lichfield Trent Valley Low Level Civil Engineer's Sidings.

I heard a loud noise coming from the railway in London at 2 am and I looked and it was one of these. It was crazy seeing it for the first time.

What's it used for?

They grind the rails to reprofile them back to their original shape because as they wear they change shape ever so slightly. You can grind them back into shape so that the track doesn’t need to be replaced as often
