Dump Truck Breaks Down Hauling Dirt - How we Fixed It

  • Yes, I fixed it. Working for Dirt Perfect again. This time he is digging a basement with the Volvo 140 but all the dirt has to be trucked to a different location on the property. To do that, I haul the dirt off with his GMC C8500 tandem axle dump truck. Things go fairly smooth, but we do end up losing the clutch brake in the truck. Luckily I was able to get one picked up and reinstalled the following day and the truck was back in action. Hope you guys enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

    Can’t believe how easy it is to change a clutch brake now with the split ones.
    Back in the 90’s the mechanics at work made it seem like it was a HUGE job to change out one which it probably was if the quick change split ones weren’t around then.
    You only need to use the clutch to start or stop unless you’re taking your license test and they make you double clutch for every gear change up or down.
    1988 was probably the last time I used a clutch to change gears in any truck except the rentals I’ve driven with 5 speed synchromesh transmissions.

    • @CaptainKleeman
      @CaptainKleeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The split ones are definitely quick and easy. Beats pulling the trans.

    Well... I think I can see a couple of shed bays poured in concrete before long to use as a quick change shop. Maybe a shop door or two and a wall to separate from the rest of the shed. And y'all know...air compressor, few tools, ect. 😁👍 Good video Captain! Thanks.

    I am confused Mike. I wrenched for years and drove as well as owned my own big rigs. I didn't know that you could step on the pedal after moving and just push it down all the way much less even use it. I mean going slow and in a bind, you have to break the tension against it till it was lose from that gear. That part of the system rides on the transmission,.. the braking part and stops the disk from spinning. Some way or the other if that pedal was shoved to the floor while moving, it would try to stop the truck from moving as well if used wrong. I never seen many trucks with the clutch brake working if driven by multiple drivers. The way I have it figured out is if the truck is sitting still and running then when you get in and step on the clutch it stopped things momentarily so you didn't have to wait as long to get into gear as that thing will spin for a few minutes after the pedal is stepped on if no brake to stop it.... what is wrong and can you explain it to this old man?

  • @jimwesselman

    All the on site hauling, it's no surprise the clutch brake went out. Soft boggy ground makes it worse. It is hard to not ride the clutch. Can always blame M.B.T.S for being too short to fully engage the clutch 🤣 . Nice fix Captain! You talk about the weather there, we got the winter preview Friday. High winds, rain, sleet, and snow. No accumulation, but it was enough to say " are you kidding me " or something like it.

What you've got planned for it is probably going to be awesome too but the view where it's at now centered on the pond is very nice. I'm still amazed at how your neighbor got the grass to look as good as it does being he planted it in the summer time heat. He really knows how to get grass to grow that's for sure. Good video. Stay well. -Wil 👍

    I didn't read all the comments so forgive me if this has been brought up. Don't let Officer Hoover see this video with the ABS light on. He might have to red tag that truck. When I had my trucks there were no split clutch brake disks. I had to take a solid one and take a pie cut out of it just big enough to get it over the pilot shaft but not to big that it would fall off,

  • @josephdriscoll8527
    @josephdriscoll8527 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The end shot with the nice grass looking out from the bell tower was too nice, changed my mind I would think it would be more useable on the ground and not having a building to go in and climbing. Maybe a lookout design in new build.

  • @BlueDually4x4
    @BlueDually4x4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Clutch brakes are actually pretty damn easy to break. One quick stop where you push the clutch in a bit too far will kill them. Dump trucks or roll off trucks usually don't last long because you are using the clutch so much more, lots more stop and go and every time you engage the PTO. As someone living out west, rain would be really nice.
    1:22 is exactly why I have a dashcam with me driving truck, it happens so often it doesn't phase me anymore. People are just in too much of a hurry, and dashcams cover your butt when they do stupid things and something bad happens. You can get some pretty good ones for under a $100 bucks and it only has to prove you innocent once to pay for itself a thousand times over.

    Hi Mike, If you had needle nose pliers would that help you take that clutch brake out. The other day when you were running the D4 you did a fine job leveling the dirt.

    A truck with a clutch brake that works? Hauling on site and the truck's not overloaded to the point the box hoist won't lift? Very suspicious.

      Since I was lucky enough to spot your post Wes, I want to ask a question or actually two. First, I thought all clutches including that twin disk had a pedal adjustment and two I thought all the bigger twin disk clutches had the little bolt and keeper to stop that clutch from unwinding or over tighten or in other words you took the bolt and keeper out and then bared the plate on the inside to tighten it on the cone in its middle and bring those plates together closer so that the clutch stayed in its limits. Put that little piece of metal back in that keeps the clutch from turning on the cone and locks it in place.... now go back inside and if the pedal is high or low adjust it accordingly. Thats how I did it for years... the two piece clutch brake came after I had quit the big stuff to do just my own stuff. I just thought that you never pushed the pedal to the floor if moving as that is where it stops the clutch from spinning. I seldom found a truck with a working clutch brake cause of drivers stepping on that pedal to the floor while moving and its goodby clutch brake. I thought only when stopped you could use that clutch brake..... what am I missing??? Please help the old guy

    DP has to give you a hard time but the clutch brake did have plenty of ware in it. I think that every boss I’ve had has said , what did you do to it or you broke it 👌. Most of the time things do just brake from normal use 👍 as always I enjoy the the videos

    Can you do an episode on your filming equipment and editing? I watch videos like this all the time and would like a more behind the scenes episode.
