From someone who learned German from the scratch (zero). Didn't have structured training, however, I was immersed in German environment and in Germany. It took one year to get the basics right, after 2 years you can manage your life, after 3 years pass the DSH exam (language test needed for admission to university). Can it be done faster ? Absolutely. I chose my own pace, language was not the only thing to care about ;)
I studied German at the secondary school from zero. We had 3-4 45-min-classes a week. At home preparation time was 1-2 hours depending on your speed per class. Although, as an adult I studied French and Spanish in intensive courses up to a fairly good level.
The American writer Mark Twain wrote once in his essay "That Awful German Language," Appendix D of A Tramp Abroad Quote: My philological studies have satisfied me that a gifted person ought to learn English (barring spelling and pronouncing) in thirty hours, French in thirty days, and German in thirty years. It seems manifest, then, that the latter tongue ought to be trimmed down and repaired. If it is to remain as it is, it ought to be gently and reverently set aside among the dead languages, for only the dead have time to learn it.
Yeah, a 19th century much overhyped author in the most vile Germanic language dares to call the language of poets and thinkers awful. Fuck Mark Twain...Samuel Clemence
@@Kivas_Fajo depends, if you know any germanic language, like english then it should take about 800 hours to be conversational (about B2). For chinese speakers though it'd probably be over 2000 hours, so really depend on what you know
Average 2.5 year old kids know 500 words and have very rudimentary grammar skills. If you have not learned any foreign language as adult you are tempted to believe that your mother tongue is easy. You simply tend to forget the years of training and language immersion. Language acquisition takes time. Check out the word lists used by Voice of America (1580 words) or Basic English (2600 words). You will find out, that 1500 words is not much.
Well apparently the guy sells courses too so not sure how accurate it is as he's talking about written exams it seems. Without actually talking the language in the wild all learning is just academic. It would also depend highly on your native language how long it takes. For an English Speaker German would be much easier to pick up than say a Japanese person.

8 months is pretty short time.
Exactly. 8 months is nothing. Learning German usually takes 2 - 3 years.

I personally take the course started with A00. Then A0, and then A1. That guy trippin' for sure, saying A1 is easy or starting point.
