    I would love to try out more mane choice and other black owned products...but im in college and can't justify spending $14+ on a small 8oz. bottle of shampoo or conditioner. So blue magic, wetline, and Aussie it is.

      Exactly -- I couldn't even dream of getting Mane Choice or whatever, when I was in school (and some months, I can't even dream of it now 😅). Gotta work with our budgets!

    When my coins are right, it's black-owned businesses all the way for my hair! TM Products (here on YT and made by hand!) helped me retain length, from a twa to past BSL in less than 3 yrs! I feel almost irrationally angry at these new Suave products coming late to "court" us, especially since Pantene had the foresight to slide into our DMs a long time ago. In a money crunch, Creme of Nature or ORS shampoo works well and Aussie Moist conditioner is the truth on my hair! Either way, I usually save until I can buy exactly what my hair loves. ♡

      What's wrong with white owned businesses? Or other ethnicities/races?

    • @m1975cl
      @m1975cl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Angela Ziegler just my take on it, I might be right or might be wrong, but there is nothing wrong with other ethic groups, just the black community is trying to build up the economic standing of black people and support them in similar ways that other groups have been doing for years, ie, the Jewish community for example, by doing what some black people are trying to do the Jew community has thrived from supporting their own members and in that case it has worked well to build everyone up. Sadly due to oppression many black people think a life of privilege and wealth will never be obtainable for them, but that won’t always be the case as more and more black people enter commerce.

    I do try to support Black hair care owned businesses. Sometimes I am afraid to get too attached, because they sell the company and formulations change! 😩 Or they run out of my favorites and it takes time to restock them. Informative video!!

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. Some brands I love(d)have gone out of business entirely, discontinued products that I adored, etc. Sadly, the industry is just too volatile for a lot of small brands to be able to make it, but we can each do our part to try to help their chances of succeeding. And, failing that, just pick up from Tresemme in a real pinch.

    Here's my take on the topic: The CEO of Koils by Nature did a Facebook live video, claiming that influencers and black consumers were the reason their businesses weren't doing well. And I'm like, chile, this is business. It's like these companies are asking individual ppl to ignore their finances & what works best on their hair, so that THEY can become successful as a business. Instead they need to be focused on serving their customers better (by offering a cheaper natural hair product, which may need fewer "natural" ingredients). There are several other youtubers who made response videos about this. (Linda Hurd, A Love 4 Me, One Smart Fro, Daye La Soul, Finally Amber, etc.) If ppl wanna support Black companies, then great. But they shouldn't be shamed into doing so. Also, just bc a business is Black owned, it doesn't automatically mean that they are truly invested into the community. How much of their net profits do these Black companies redistribute to the Black community. Some TH-camrs have even talked about how some of these Black companies have mistreated them and underpaid them during sponsorships. It's just a nuanced conversation to me, w/ multiple layers.

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree with your points. Unfortunately, the internet (TH-cam and social media outlets, especially) are not places where nuanced conversations are what typically occur. Rather, people take binary points of view, and just try to out-shout or out-shame anyone who doesn't agree 100%. I've had some truly atrocious experiences with a handful of black-owned hair brands over the years (as a consumer, not a content creator), and I no longer support those brands, and I certainly never discuss/promote them in my videos. Being black-owned does not mean we should be guilted into paying exorbitant prices, or dealing with crap customer service. Especially when some of those brands are doing about as much for the black community as Pantene is.

    I wonder how much of the “natural hair is too expensive to maintain” comes down to the pressure people may feel to wear their hair in a way society deems fit. People with tight coils may feel they need to make their hair look like Tracee Ellis Ross’ and that’s going to take a ton of product, but if we (as a society) just let folks live, many probably wouldn’t feel the need to buy so many products to have their hair be “presentable”.

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An insightful point! My hair texture, for example, is rarely (if ever) portrayed in mainstream media and ads, so I think that many people feel a need to try to turn the tighter textures into something else entirely. Whether it's through the use of products or wigs/weaves/hair pieces, trying to make one's hair something other than what it is can, indeed, become very costly.

    Ive started using v05 shampoo and conditioner, its amazing! Right now im looking for good gels to replace aunt jackies for a wash and go, and a deep conditioner to replace the shea moisture rose one. I might look into the shescentit brand. And for protective styling im really into yarn braids rn. One bundle of yarn is $4, and i can do long box braids twice from one bundle. And you -can- reuse the yarn if you really want to (i usually dont though).

      It seems to be a pretty polarizing shampoo, but I think that's true about nearly all shampoos on afro hair. I think shampoos are THE hardest part to nail in a routine, because afro hair is so easily dried out.

    • @GoingNatural1806
      @GoingNatural1806 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely agree! I’ve been trying to find a shampoo that I love for years now. I need something more moisturizing. I’ve found a couple that I like, but no “holy grail” one yet. I’ve heard people say that you can add oils to shampoos to make them more moisturizing, but that just seems counterintuitive to me. 🤔

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree -- I've never thought the idea of adding oil to shampoo made *any* sense (similar to how shampoo + conditioner 2-in-1 products don't really make much sense -- which is probably why we don't really see them too much any more). My holy grail shampoo is one that I can't even get any more, but I've been happy to have found a few other ones that work well enough for me (this Creme of Nature one, the Camille Rose Ginger Rinse and the SheaMoisture High Porosity Shampoo are helping me to cope with the loss 😅). Godspeed in your continued search!

    My hands and scalp are eczema prone and my hair is extremely porous (naturally, not damaged), and I live in a desert, so both are picky about ingredients. I also have hard water and my hair is humectant sensitive. Plus I hate a couple of the more common preservatives used. Believe it or not, a few black owned companies do make products that would meet my picky criteria... but at a high price for an 8oz. bottle or even smaller, which doesn’t work for a lady with a small budget and thick, nearly tailbone length hair. Sooo... yeah. Currently using Live Clean conditioners and some Shea Moisture shampoos and masks. Occasionally trying diy stuff, and probably will have to do more of that in the future since Shea Moisture keeps changing or discontinuing stuff that worked for me.
    But if the price and ingredients were right, I’d happily support black owned businesses. For now, I’m content using stuff that isn’t tested on animals and doesn’t break the bank (or my hair).

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel you on the hard water woes -- same problem in my area. And yes, SheaMoisture has discontinued/reformulated *a lot* of my favorites. Finding a balance between supporting small/black-owned businesses, while also living within (but ideally, BELOW) my means takes some thought, but it definitely can be done.

  • @marvinandjosh1
    @marvinandjosh1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There are ways to make natural hair care inexpensive and I always tell people to go the ‘Naptural85’ way...start making your own products. Homemade mud washes/black soap for shampoo. DIY masks for DCs. Aloe Vera juice spritzes for leave-ins and seal with whipped Shea butter. If you are willing to put in the work, do some research, and get in the kitchen, you could make natural products for very little.
    I do a combo of both. I make my own whipped shea butter for sealing and my own black soap shampoo. The rest, I go ahead and purchase. So maybe invest in products that you need made and the ones you can do yourself, do it to save some money.

    • @Mumbillionaire
      @Mumbillionaire 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How do you make black soap shampoo? I really love the Ali Kay naturals one but it’s a pretty coin and hard to come by here in the UK. And God forbid they get bought out by some wypipo corporation and that formula goes to shit! I need to be prepared

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. I did a video where I used 100% DIY products, so it's definitely possible. I didn't think to tally up the cost of everything, at the time, but it's definitely the way to go in terms of getting the highest quality of ingredients for the lowest cost in your hair care. A lot of people don't have the time (or just don't have the desire) to make their own products, which I respect. Good news is, it's still very possible to get the job done with inexpensive products -- you'll just be sacrificing the quality of the ingredients, as I touched on in my mini rant in the video.

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @lisa k Do a TH-cam search. I've seen *several* videos on making your own black soap shampoo, over the years. I think Whitney (Naptural85) even did one, so you'll find lots of options out there.

  • @AfroIrish88
    @AfroIrish88 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for making this wash day video!
    But from a realistic stand point, this wasn't a $2.68 wash day. It was a $30 wash day, if you bought all the products you used. Granted that's cheap from a black-owned natural hair line prospective, but $30 is a lot for a cheap wash day. Unless someone is borrowing someone else's products, you can't buy hair products from a store by the ounce. This video doesn't help someone with only a few dollars to buy products with. For example: V05 shampoo and conditioner are $0.79 a piece. Throw in a $1 grease and you can moisturize and seal your hair. Aussie Moist conditioner is $3 and was a total life saver for me since I could use it to detangle, condition, and leave-in as a decent styler.

    • @nappyheadedjojoba
      @nappyheadedjojoba  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Relax. It's ≈ $30, if you use the entire container of every single product in one wash day. Which no one would do. My cost breakdown refers to what is *actually used* on the wash day, just the same way people will break down the per meal/per serving cost of a recipe, rather than the bulk cost of groceries.
